David Fincher was doing his press junket for his latest movie. In one of the interview he was asked what recent movie he was most impressed with. He name dropped this.
The stunning opening literally puts me into cinematic orgasm. You thought you have seen all the onesies that put on the screen for the last 15 years or so. All I can say you haven't seen shit yet until now. The sheer scope of the staging and chaos on screen simply breaks your mind. On top of that there's enough adequate storytelling to keep you glued to the screen. Great watch.
The Killer - Don't think this is for anyone thinking you're watching an action packed movie or Fincher reinventing the genre. Tonally this reminded me of what Steven Sorderberg used to crank out in the 90's and 00's before he did the big Oceans movies. Those brooding crime thriller in the mold of Le Samourai. On a whole I like it a fair bit, this is more of a side project to those usual prestigious Fincher output. So you might felt underwhelming. Stand out is Tilda Swinton and who knows maybe Fassbender will actively back to acting again. And the choice of using The Smiths songs is something unexpected but nevertheless cool.
Please don't sit on this!!! This is a real banger. Like Arcane, it has no right to be a great series and yet it checked on all the boxes. The swordfight is very original and not your standard flashy anime kind. The story also pretty good and more importantly a really badass heroine. Netflix delivered back to back 2 great anime. Pluto and now this.
This a pretty good apocalyptic thriller. I was interested in what Sam Esmail, creator of Mr.Robot has to show this time around. It's like a more serious Black Mirror episode. The movie ends abruptly and you have to decide what's the meaning. Yupp it's those ambiguous movie that doesn't hold your hand. There's strong performance from the stars and things got weirder by the minute. Ultimately does humanity deserve to survive?
Rebel Moon Part 1 - I believe this is strictly a movie meant for Snyder's fanboys. It's unnecessarily convoluted with really frustrating pacing. No effing idea why I need to care for Sir Anthony Hopkins voiced robot. There's a point where they recruit Bae Doona character who went philosophical that revenge is not the reason to fight. Guess what reason the next person who joined the group for? Yupp it's revenge!!! WTF???
As much as I want Sofia Boutella to be a mega star to carry the movie. Sadly Snyder is not the director to bring out the best what she can do. Remember watching her in Gaspar Noe's Climax, she can command the screen with her acting chop.
Think it's not as bad as Sucker Punch or Army of the Dead. Don't hold your breath this is any better than those crappy Star Wars sequel from Disney.
The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon - the Chinese title is "Zhou Zhu eliminate three evils". A fairy tale of a warrior who gained better insight after defeating three demons. He became a better person and come to be a beloved king. Although a Taiwanese movie, it's very much good old HK cinema. Plotline just so so but the performances and action scenes are welcoming.
A hitman on the run and being told he has stage 4 cancer. At the same time he is third most wanted person in Taiwan. He resolve to kill the two most wanted person as repentance while succumbing to his terminal illness. If you're itching for stuff that Dante Lam used to make, do give this brutal thriller a look. Just turn off your brain for potholes.
To my utter surprise, Terminator Zero is effing awesome! Yes it will go through some familiar story beats, once the set-up locked in, get ready for some mind-eff twist. Thoroughly intrigue and finally someone got the balls to steer it into uncharted territory. Please feed the algorithm so they put out 2nd season.
Adolescence - The best miniseries to date. It's a very timely and a hard look at the society we live in. With all the brain rotting shits going on in social media, a hard hitting crime drama will have you worrying about the next generation. Final note, fuck Andrew Tate for legitimizing misogyny and social media platforming this shit stain of humanity. For the love of god, don't get red pilled by these far right grifters.
With respectable names attached to this and a rather new angle to a dark crime thriller. Two separate individual connected to a sexual criminal. It starts out to deliver justice to the antagonist, then the table flips where the grey morality plays out. The film took an examination of religion OCD and psychology trauma to drive the narrative forward. It's above average because of the new angle but somehow misses the landing in the end. Not saying don't watch, who knows maybe this will be your cup of tea.
Upfront this is not as good as The Raid. Nevertheless still a good watch especially if you're yearning for an unhinged "Hard boil" flick. When the action drops, get ready for brutal wall to wall action. Tom Hardy is great as the crooked cop caught in the middle of an all out gang war. The story is pretty bland and convoluted at times, once Gareth Evans start his fancy camera work, let the symphony of mayhem assault your eyeballs.
Guess things getting a bit formulaic! It's not as impressionable as the last few seasons. Not saying it's all lost cause, Spider Rose and Zeke got Religious are the highlights for me. To a certain degree, it's the same problem with Black Mirror where you just go through the trappings of anthology narrative.
This is a grounded Korean John Wick. The first half plays out like the first John Wick movie where protagonist going after a spoiled mob boss son. Then it change gear to conspiracy theory behind hero's brother murder mystery. Lotsa punching in the face action and rather good narrative hook to it. 7 episodes of 30-ish minutes of easy binge.
Finally got time to finish the season. Quite fond of it but can't help it there's no way to contain everything from the dense 19 graphic novel volumes. Surprised William Shakespeare didn't make it cause he is the bookend for the comic book ending.
At least a good enough adaptation that does justice to the original work. Season 1 still the better watch and it's a miracle they get to complete the series with such prestige production quality given the niche appeal.
A very well made nuclear drama that seems very legit. The attack being told from three different perspective. The movie present the protocol comes to facing a nuclear attack which marred by bureaucratic players and systems. It painted how ill prepared any countries are should a nuclear attack happened. Guess the myth of shooting down an airborne nuclear warhead is all just a coin tossed with the current available US arsenal. So retaliation is the only game on the table.
