5.1, 2.1 or 2.0, all depends on individual taste. I went from 2.1 to 5.1 and back to 2.0. ^^
For me use 2.0 when use stereo music, 5.1 when play surround music (eg. celine dion concert dvd).
When use stereo source to 5.1, the singer feels around you, when stereo to 2.0 the stage is in front. Depend on individual preference.
Dont look down on 2.0, if your speakers is good, the sound stage is big, for my 2.0, the soundstage is about 5 times bigger than z5500 with all 5 speakers playing (i use z5500 with all speakers in front)
Yes sound card and the source file is important, then follow by speaker.
I use Z-5500D the speakers around me. Nah 2.0 Only a method for the stage to be infront. With 5.1 surround you feel like you are in the crowd itself with the stage infront of u. ( Like you are really there) PPl Scream also around u

My soundcard-- can't seem to see WHAT it actually is: Device Manager and the DXDIAG command only tells me it's SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec; not very helpful.

I want to know if it's integrated, but can't seem to find out: I suspect it's integrated.

For source file-- whenever possible I get high quality lossless files (FLAC + APE), or mp3 at minimum of 192 kbps (Only take 128 kbps IF there's no other option available) or OGG at quality 5 and above; but they're more or less all encoded in stereo, I think.

So for me buying a 5.1 waste of money or not?
I see people commenting on S330 SQ may sound better than C3-- Power of the satellites on S330 definitely more than C3, I can see, but the subwoofer on S330 is smaller (6.5") vs C3 subwoofer driver (8")-- how does that work out?

no need guess signma confirm integrated (SigmaTel High Definition Audio)
