Hi guys! Finally, it happened - after 12 years of smoking, I decided to quit. I know it's gonna be a very long and difficult way. But is there anybody who has already quit? Do you have any advice for a beginner? It's my first try and I'd like it to be the last one. I found a couple of quit smoking guides (like this one https://vapingdaily.com/quit-smoking/), do you think they are useful? And btw do you think it's better to start vaping? Anyway, I have a lot of questions and also would like to read tour own stories.

Like you, I had a bad habit. For almost 16 years trying to get rid off. Tried lots of techniques. What worked for me is this book.

https://www.amazon.com/Switch-Change-Things...=gateway&sr=8-1

You will need coping and alternative strategies when the urge comes in.. Relapse is real.

During this phase, it is important to stay away from places where smoking is allowed and not be in the company of friends who smoke wantonly. If that means you have to avoid social meetings for a month or two, then so be it.

How many sticks of cigarettes were you smoking before? Try bringing your daily quota down to 3 sticks or less. Then cut it out completely.

1. Don't try to quit in cold turkey.
2. Find new friends who do not smoke.
3. Replace cig nicotine with nicotine patch and how to gradually reduce.
4. Vaping is bad, not as bad a cig but still bad. Lesser bad is still bad.
5. Carry around gum to chew
6. It is about changing the habit. Replace it with productive habit.
7. Stop hanging out with smoking buddies / friends until you completely quit.
8. Remember why you want to quit - stay commited to yourself.

You can also google for steps to overcome alcohol by alcoholic anonymous. But that one requires you to believe in a power greater than me biggrin.gif LOL

You must first look at the reasons why you are smoking again. Were there particular triggers? E.g. Stress or anxiety about something?

Try distracting yourself with exercise or some healthy activity instead of thinking about cigarettes.

Almost all major government hospital are equipped with stop smoking clinic. They will provide you a chewing gum for nicotine replacement with graded dosage so you can minimize the withdrawal symptoms. You can save quite some buck since its a subsidized programme (for now).

Good luck.

Firstly, you need to get motivated and have a powerful reason in order to quit smoking. A reason that is strong enough to outweigh the urge to light up.

Secondly, prepare before you go 'Cold Turkey' such as quit-smoking classes and apps, counseling, medication, and hypnosis.

Thirdly, consider nicotine replacement therapy such as nicotine gum, lozenges, and patches improve your chances of success when you’re also in a quit-smoking program.

Last but not least, get moving. Being active can curb nicotine cravings and ease some withdrawal symptoms.

I wish you all the best! thumbup.gif

After 11 years of smoking, and fluctuating between periods of quitting and starting back, going cold turkey is the only method for me.

Good points tho I quit twice on Cold turkey.

First, quit overnight for more than a decade, i was a heavy smoker. Reason? Not much, too costly, $5 USD a pack back then.

Returned to Malaysia, everyone was smoking and i got suck back in again and back to one pack a day! But recently just quit cold turkey again, 2 plus months now ciggie free. Why did i quit? I was a proud daily runner, i missed running long distance again.

I don't use any patches, or any replacements, gum... just quit overnight. I keep running, and run fast to remind me how rewarding it is to have a good lung. The hard part was i got used to smoke immediately after a run or a hike, it was a tough battle.

Quit cold turkey after almost 20 years. Method = have an obsession that you can activate whenever the urge returns. And yeah, new circle of non smoking friends.

Success story here. My volume was 20-30 ciggies per day and worse if it is happy hour day. My last stick was like 8 years ago.

First off, I seldom hear where guys manage to quit when there are no real strong motivations. You must find your reasons.
You just cant quit because you think ciggy is expensive or your family members berates you. Weak reasons wont work.
If given choice between a lunch and a pack of ciggy you will choose ciggy, I know I did.
Strong motivation examples:
#1 Wifey got pregnant.
#2 You go for some sort of medical checkup. Doctor show your lung x-ray all blackish, you got scared/kiasi.
#3 You cough up red colored phlegm, you got scared/kiasi. (actually you just 'heaty' lol).
My reasons
#1 I got self-conscious when french-kiss with gf.
#2 Was training for half marathon.
#3 I was very annoyed by my constant coughing all year long. I am getting old, I simply think it is time to quit. This was my strongest reason.

Anyhow, here is my method. The gradual reduce ciggy intake, or vaping, or rolling custom made ciggy never work for me.
When I quit I go from 20-30 ciggy per day straight to 0 ciggy, meaning totally stop.

I figure there are only two reasons for the desire to smoke.
#1 Nicotine level in blood stream. This is backed by science, so ok. I counter this with nicotine tablets(expensive) and nicotine patches(cheaper).
#2 Habits/peers pressure/beer. This is purely willpower. Since I already taking nicotine tablets/patches, so am I really so weak minded? Just bear with it, there are no excuse.

First day is most excruciating, then better and better for the next 6 days. By the eighth day already getting used to it.
If remember correctly I used nicotine tablets the first 7 days, then patches for the next 14 days.

Hopefully this post help others.
