If you intend to keep the card but not using it, yes you need to pay but if you intend to cancel it, then banks will write it off.
Sharing my experience up there as well.

Normally better to call cs and ask them to send card replacement cards which going to expire. Some bank don’t send. Sometimes sst auto charge. Better terminate even not activate to avoid issue. Else been flag as default without realize
I'm planning to cancel it, just that I have credit balance and they can't assist me to cancel the credit card immediately, plus I am in the midst of getting this SST reversed. No issue with AF, they agreed to reverse the amount.
OMG! I'm actually dealing with HSBC for this SST, decided to post in this thread since I remember I read it somewhere before customers do not have to pay for the SST if we have not used the card post the SST. I hope mine don't have to be dragged for months like yours.. It's so difficult to reach them, do not even have an email or e-form to proceed with all these requests.
Thanks for sharing though, hoping there is a link or smt for me to prove and show the bank I do not have to pay for the SST in order to get the card canx asap.
