QUOTE(ewynn @ Mar 15 2008, 09:04 AM)
Hi all,

I bought my first gunpla yesterday. It's a HG of scale 1/144 and i thought of 'decorating' it but not to the level for displaying  blush.gif . This model will be a 1-shot project as i'm not really into gun-pla-ing; but since i bought one why not make it look at least semi-decent.

I read thru the pinned thread and the corresponding tutorials for newbies, but thought it might be better to ask for confimation before i buy the required materials. tongue.gif

Basically i plan just to do lining and some painting to replace the stickers and also certain parts that come in 1 color (mostly the weaponry and some parts of the limbs .... maybe some slight paint to cover up the left-over nubs (if got) ).

So the items i'll need are : gundam markers, topcoat, primer(?), thinner for cleaning up. As for the paint i'm intending to use Acrylic type, and handpaint it. Process will be line-> paint -> assemble and finally topcoat?

Hope my question isn't weird, and fellow forumers out there can answer. Many thanks in advance.  notworthy.gif
*
hmm... it's a good thing that u wan to "decoarte" ur gundam.. haha...
the proper items u need at 1st is a cutter and design knife... if u plan to continue buying more gunpla then it shud be worth to get all these items... if u're using acrylic type, this is water based so mixing with water, KENOT MIX wiv thinner...
the correct process shud be pre assemble->sand->cover seam lines-> prime-> paint-> decals-> topcoat..... but some of the steps here u can skip like decals coz HG dun hav ma... tongue.gif
any other questions?

stick well as in? wat happen wif i dun prime? the paint will flow down on to the ground izit? can't find mr.surfacer here in west msia.......T_T

sorry for asking the same question over n over again.
*
ok stick well as in, if u dun prime a false move(accidentally scratch it) the paint peels off...
If u prime, the paint won't peel off so easily coz there's a layer to hold the paint... get wat i mean?
i've tried b4 priming and without it... the paint easily cracks and peels off.. so now i prime all my kits...

QUOTE(darklancer @ Mar 15 2008, 01:09 PM)
tat why.......T_T

izit possible to spray without applying surfacer?
*
yes.... same answer as above

thanks for the input. I already have the required tools and ingredients except the paints, topcoat and primer. Went out to find them today but only managed to get the marker and surfacer ...

Other than Mr. Color series and Tamiya color, are there any kinda paints that can be used? I stumbled upon this Pelikan Plaka(?) today and the staff said that it can be used for gunpla painting as well. @_@ Also, which topcoat should i get? I don't really know the major difference between all 3 types other than they're ... glossy and non glossy.  doh.gif
*
lol... here we go again....
better dun trust tat staff, really nvr heard b4 wat is pelikan plaka.. doh.gif
Mr.hobby=mr.color got acrylic and lacquer type of paint
tamiya got acrylic, lacquer i dun think so got...
for the topcoat question....
Check this LINK
very helpful for u and there's photos for u to see the difference of topcoats.. smile.gif

I think those surfacers... white and gray .... its for different tones of color rite ? Like if i apply white paint over gray primer, the white will look darker mah ?  So it all depends on toning ?  just asking.  smile.gif
*
nope... tones of colors are actually done by AB.. 1st layer let's say blue then u put black.. something like that...
every sifu also use gray surfacer...
i could be wrong so if i am, someone please correct me. smile.gif

cement is for u to stick ur parts... here's the process
afta cement, close the part as tight as u can until its dry, if there is cement flowing out then use design knife to cut away abit then sand it to make it smooth and also to make the seam lines gone..
NOTE: once cement, there's no turning back... so plan ur stages properly. smile.gif

Hi guys.. Can i know that if the spray paint from Mr.hobby & tamiya spray paint can get along together.. what i mean is will the paint get screw up if i used both brand on 1 model.

How muc his those paint cost... from what i know is the Times Squre shop at 7th floor sell RM30 each for Mr.hobby spray while Tamiya underground sell RM25 for its spray paint...  is there anypalce i can get cheeper spray paint of the 2 brand mentioned..

Anyway can anyone tell me the location of Toycity petaling street.. are they still seling tamiya paints?

Cheers smile.gif
*
u sure u wan to spend money on those brands.. those cans can kill ur wallet...
there's one brand tat i've recommended everyone getting if they are into spray cans... but it's industrial spray can but so far no problem with it for gundam..
it's called Nippon Pylox. There's a lot of variety of colors too and one can cost u RM6-9 which 3-4 cans = Tamiya/Mr.hobby spray cans.. whistling.gif

QUOTE(darklancer @ Mar 18 2008, 05:55 PM)
2 layer of topcoat? why?

when applying top coat, do u guys detach the parts eg, head, arms n legs from the main body and spray them separately or just spray ?
*
1 layer to protect the paints also after u spray, ur decals behind them wun see a different color or something like tat becoz of the 1st layer then 2nd layer is to protect the decals.. get wat i mean?
it's like of coz u dun put decal then spray... something like tat

QUOTE(darklancer @ Mar 18 2008, 07:21 PM)
when comes to spraying, seems tat everyone put the parts on a stick, sate stick for malaysians, izit ok just to put the part on the ground and spray?

bout the sate sticks, wat do u guys put on them to make the parts stick on them?
*
nvr put on the ground... becoz if u spray alr, u wan to turn them over rite? the paint is still wet and u kenot touch it yet and also the ground a lot of dirt or dust which may stick to ur kit when u spray...

did u prime ur kit? it happen to me when i didn't prime my kit..
if u see my zaku n my HG wing, it's totally fine coz i prime them, paint din chip off...
nippon paints are weather proof but these r plyox wo. sweat.gif
if u wan to do shading, u nid to use other type of paints coz Pylox is lacquer type, u cant have the same paint or the paint will be smeared.. topcoat is last la, u dun hav to topcoat to do shading.. sweat.gif

nope, i havent top coat yet. this happened when i put the parts together, the paint got scratch.....means nippon pilox paint fall of from scratches.....and i tot nippon paints are weather proof @_@

wat i wanted to do is to add shading after spray then topcoat, but now hv to topcoat then shading then topcoat again.....

Added on March 19, 2008, 12:47 amnope, i didnt prime. can't find surfacer T_T the paint fall off from simple scratch...wat shud i do?
