Well... all has been said and adviced.... Amedion, most of us here have experience about hamster breeding and hamster care for years.... we take it seriously and do not like it when people do not take care of them properly or follow care guides..... this is why we always mouth out our advice and opinions.

anizarina, you had better stop breeding the female... do you know Robos can live for 3 years fully? But with breeding, you have cut her lifespan to only 2 years..... the more you breed, she may not even go for 2 years...... if you want her to have a long life, please please separate the female away from the male. Think of her life, everytime breed and breed, no need retire? All my females retire after give birth 3 times..... no more than that.

Well, I was at Pet family just now.... and saw this 3 storey cage for RM48!!!! A normal cage but with plastic flooring! Good buy, I may buy it tomorrow if it is still there. No metal floor, spacious for 3 dwarf hamsters and easy to clean.

Yesterday was my 1st quality buy. Will get a pic of him soon. He is a black bear, with white paws, white ears, a white half moon on his chest and a white tipped tail.

No... you should not bath a hamster with water at all. It can kill it or make it sick. Just stick with sand bath.

Look it yourself. It is in the pinned topics in this pet forum.

Sand bath, just put a bowl or plate of hamster or chinchilla sand bath in their cage/tank. That's it.

Please read the 1st page.... you seem like a newbie with hamsters.

Give only as treats and a bit. Oats, especially those instant or quick cooking are bad coz it adsorbs water very well, can cause bloat or impaction.... only little amounts can be fed. You better feed Rolled Oats.... stop giving instant oats. Bad for their health.

Yah, Sabit is very black.... I only got diluted black at home. Take his pics also so hard since can't see his eyes properly haahah.

Rolled oats are great treats, almost all rodent pets love them. You can try give dog biscuit or Jacob's cream cracker as treats..... only Jacob's cream cracker is safe coz it contains very little oil and salt, those cheap ones are oily and salty.

can i put hamster in the air cond room and will it affect the hamster anything??
*
You can but make sure the cage is not directly under the air cond and it cannot be too cool. Your room should not be colder than 25C or the hamster can go into hibernation, sleep and die slowly.

I already bought 1 pack of BC bedding, then notice that Pets Wonderland got sell those repacked one, ok or not?? worth?
*
It can last 2 weeks if you have 2 hamsters in 1 tank.... well, I can only agak for you hahaha... coz I only change when I find it smelly. There is a musky smell if you put your face near the bedding but you won't really notice it if you are just walking by. Repacked? How much they sell wor? 6L which is about 2kg is only Rm22..... I think you can get discount if you buy from jtl.... she also got sell.

QUOTE(hanissyazwan @ Jul 18 2007, 12:44 PM)
can we use common sand to hamster for sand bathing?
*
No. The bathing sand is light, sterilize and absorbs oils... common sand is dirty, won't absorb body oils and may cause your hamster to stink more.

When a hamster reaches 1 year old, it is not a young age.... in fact, considered middle age already. Their prime age is 6 months old. It is normal for some to start becoming sickly or skinny or inactive.... Some will have hair loss, some will develop liver disease and so on.

My RC is 1 year 8 months old, he is hairless in some parts, thinner than before but still walking around. A RC at 1.8 years is considered very old, like an 80 year old man.... this is for RC since they age faster....

can i ask you guys what happens if normally a hamster sleeps most of the time eh??
i think this is just a baby hamster like 6 months old like that...
can someone tell me what's goin on??
*
Hamsters sleep in the day and is only active late at night.... sometimes midnight, sometimes really early in the morning like 4am. Due to their natural habits, they sleep more than they are awake.

QUOTE(cool disel @ Jul 26 2007, 08:07 AM)
hello hamster's lovers smile.gif
just i'm having a problem with my two winter white females hamster.. one of them keep bitting and fighting the other one, i thought that they may just fight for fun or something like female fight but not a cat fight.. and 2day i just noticed a little injury (alittle blood near to her behind) on one of them and i'm not really sure what to do sad.gif
so for the moment i isolated the bad girl in another cage.. so what should i do ? any way to make them accepting each other sad.gif
*
Hamsters need lots of space. Don't believe petshops.... those cages that they sell are only suitable for 1 hamster. Roborovskis are more social than other hamsters.... Russian Campbells are more sociable than Winter Whites.... Syrians are solitary. Anyway, RC and WW, living alone is no problem. In fact, they feel happier and peaceful when alone unlike Robos coz robos can get bored alone.

A 2ft tank is the best size for 2 or 3 dwarf hamsters. They need the space to isolate themselves if there are fights.... anyway, fighting is very common so the best is housing them separately. They won't feel lonely.... all that lonely stuff came about from us putting in human emotions.... animals do not have human emotions... they purely on instinct.

QUOTE(opy @ Jul 26 2007, 11:31 AM)
YESH..LIKE LAST TIME MY HAMSTER FIGHT TOGETHER UNTIL ONE OF EM DIED..AND ALSO THE OTHER ONE DIED TOO...DUNNO Y BUT MAYBE BECOZ OF LONELINESS...
*
It died from infection..... the wounds that do not heal well can become septic and poison the blood... hamsters won't die from loneliness.

QUOTE(ChopSuey @ Jul 26 2007, 01:54 PM)
Sorry if this has been asked before - the thread is
very long.

But I notice my Syrian hamster is not eating certain
parts of his hamster food such as the brown pellet
stuff and some colourful star shapes and pill shapes.

What brand of hamster food should I get that he will
eat (or enjoy) more of?

- yap
*
What brand have you been using? The brown pellets are alfalfa pellets, hamsters do not eat these. Pill shape? Star shape? I cannot imagine them.... say the brand and we would know.

Ah... very good idea, saves you space and some money hahahah....

Besides newspaper, if you want something that can be used as a base and last, can find impraboard or cloroplast.... Well, I usually call impraboard at the bookshop but dunno got other names or not for it. It is like a plastic board with lines... comes in a few colours. Most book shops do sell it.

I've used Sluis, Vita-vitties and Hartz hamster food.
Quite a lot of wastage on those brands.

He runs out soon so I will try Prestige.

Thanks,
Yap
*
Most hamsters do not like Sluis.... Hartz is very normal, similar to Habitrail.... maybe Prestige or Harry Hamster would be ok.

QUOTE(joanalooidog @ Jul 27 2007, 09:30 AM)
wat can i say........nice setup!!!!  drool.gif
but the base for the 2nd floor need to be replace by a harder material. Let say a plastic board, or an aluminium tray would be nice. THe alunimium tray can be found at Hypermarket, where the dish, bowls, fork and spoon are place. Get the tray, shape it accordingly, then punch some holes at the side, use wires to secure it to the cage bars........

Added on July 27, 2007, 9:55 amoh ya, there is a petshop in Sunway Pyramid is it?? where is it located? There got sell hamster and accesories is it?? got sell pearl white or not? might wanna get 1 to complete my collection. wanna go there look look later.
*
Sunway Pyramid got lah.... opposite Giant super market. There got cheap hamsters.... but not all good quality, some too young but if lucky, can find nice ones lah. The pearl WW very fast habis ahahah.... but I've not been there for months so have no idea got stock or not.

Anyway, UPDATE you guys:

Petsmore at Petaling Street now sells Prestige and Harry Hamster as well as Hoppel Mobbel Hamster Menu. There is also Extra Vital hamster food, which I heard is quite good since it has turkey meat inside and has good protein.... Rm13.80 for 500g only LOL....

QUOTE(BlueWind @ Jul 28 2007, 10:11 PM)
Hey everybody, I'm thinking of keep hamster and have some question would like to ask. I saw among some of you all have 2 hamsters while the guide says that only one hamster for one cage. Also, when it comes to cleaning the tank or cage, can I like buy one some kind of ball or like car specially design for hamster and put it inside while cleaning the tank or cage? I mean like let it roam around the house then when the cage is cleaned then I put back in.

Ok, last one can anybody give me a must-buy list for starting a cage for a hamster? Thanks a lot!

Cheers!
*
BlueHeng already gave you great advice... but I'll give some of my input as well.

Many buy hamsters in pairs is because the petshop tells them to. Enter a petshop and act like you dunno anything bout hamsters and ask them that you wanna buy hamster but dunno wanna get 1 or 2... they will always say get a pair coz happier.... rubbish talk! For they are just doing business, they have never read up or research or experience hamster behaviour....

Trust me, if you want you hamster to live long, get 1 is enough....

Only sometimes dwarf hamsters can stay in pairs... Roborovski hamsters need to be in pairs or small groups to stay active and calm but then this species of hamster is not for the beginner as they are more sensitive, more hyper and timid. You can't hold one for long. If you like to hold a pet, a Syrian hamster is the best. Big and furry, these make great beginner hamsters. Winter Whites are great too and the best is having one.... if you want 2, it is possible but your tank or cage must be 2ft in length. Smaller and they may fight when mature or just out of the blue. Russian Campbells do quite well in a pair.... but of course I will still say keeping them singly is the best too. This is from my own experience with these 4 types of hamsters....

Yes, you can get the hamster ball.... but then you must never leave the ball without supervision coz a hamster can run into a wall, bump a few times and the ball can crack or the cover collapse... a hamster can escape or suffer concussions. The best is to put your hamster in a small container while you are cleaning the tank.

A tank is the best. It is cheaper for a plastic 2ft tank is like Rm41, a storage box equivalent to that size would be like RM30.... of course a plastic tank for fishes(Rm41) is much nicer to have.

If you still want a cage, the best and safe cage would be Habitrail, Critter Trail, WILD and the new storage box cage Pet Safari sells.... these cages are comfortable, safe for their feet and are easy to clean... well, from experience, Critter Trail is a bit harder to clean. Anyway, Habitrail has a new cage design shaped like a sphere, very modern looking but it is only suitable for 1 hamster coz the space is just right for 1 hamster only.

For a starter list, you would need:

Tank or cage
Wood shavings or bedding (Look in the 1st page for the bedding review)
Food (Go for Prestige or Harry Hamster, if you can't afford those... you can use Habitrail but quality is quite low)
Water bottle
Sand Bath (just place in a plate or bowl or hamster toilet, the hamster will roll in it)
Hay (You can use Sluis comfort hay, this is cheap.... or any hay that you like)
Food bowl
If you do not have a wheel in the cage/tank, get a wheel

For toys, you do not have to buy them. Use your imagination.... you can use old glass jars or cups, the middle part of the toilet roll, small cardboard boxes.... up to your imagination.
