I saw it at Ikano, Pet Safari... it looks like a tank to me, just fancier looking, lol. It said, hamster playpen or something. I would rather get them a medium size fish tank biggrin.gif Like me now, I just leave MoFo in my bathtub while I clean his cage, haha. He go crazy too in the bathtub, I put his toys, tissue roll... and his wheel biggrin.gif

Hey... I'm thinking of raring hamsters next year...

And I'm wondering whether is it ok to get hamsters from shops like Pets Wonderland or Pet Safari?

Well... I'd say dont breed because hamsters unlike cats or dogs, they breed like mad, since they are rats afterall. But then, that's my opinion, it's actually up to you if you cope with the fast paced multipups breeding environment.

Also, unlike cats and dogs (this is based on my readings), hamsters dont have known disease that can be transmitted to human also to be passed down the bloodlines. So it is not really important to get your breeding pair from reputable breeder (cats and dogs u need lor), altho maybe temperament will be much better if you get it from the breeder here. smile.gif At least you know your breeding pair is already tame and docile. If you get from petshops, the pair will be very young and you need to tame them yourself. But then again good also since they are young, it is easier to train. smile.gif

I really not sure about asking this guy to get babies and tame them when they are young. You wouldn't know how much experience he has with hamsters in the first place. Let alone baby hamsters. He is not like Foo or Hun who has breeding and taming experience.

Not everyone can easily handle baby hamsters. It requires time, patience and determination to do so.

So saying make sure to get babies so that you can tame is not such an easy task.

OMG. I just checked a website on the growth progress of a syrian baby. Comparing the size of the babies in the pics with the babies I got from Ikano yesterday, I can easily say that they are less than 30 days old!!!!!!!! Geeeeeez...

At 3 weeks old they need to be separated from mom... but to rehome they need to be at least 5-6 weeks old. If like this that means those poor pups were separated from mom and directly shipped to petshops, then mom can start breeding again. Woah, if like this... these so called breeder make a lot of money leh... let say petshop take RM5 per pups, 50 pups per week... (sure got lot of females give birth every other week)... wah, RM1000 per mth free free like that la..

Hamsters upkeep so cheap somemore... just give them cheap food, cheap tanks, cheap bedding (old newspaper also can)... no need to handle, just wear gloves lor if mother biting...no wonder la.... pfffft.

Sigh. So sad, worse than cats and dogs, hamsters breed faster than cats and dogs... just because they are rats doesnt mean they are pest that can be taken lightly like no value of life. I hate these ppl. vmad.gif

AGREED blurjoey smile.gif
The 3 babies I have so fragile... need to give them a lot of time and confidence before u start poking them... I can only managed to stroke 1 of them for now... the new one from last nite still very scared of this giant peeping at their tanks, lol. Well if u ask me, IMHO.... all animals u need to PET first.. BREED later. Need some loving and caring first mah rolleyes.gif

Missgeek,

That's why I said no matter how many you rescue from the Pet Shop, they will get supplies from the breeding farm. That's why I choose not to buy from them and keep encouraging them to stock up more innocent hamsters from those breeding farms. I know its sad but its happening around the world. sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Truetrue.. but then what I think is, better to save 3 than nothing smile.gif of course they will restock, if we dont buy... othes will, and they will still restock.. sad.gif but those we buy, we know those are the lucky ones that will be loved... even for only 3 years. We can never save them I know... oh well, we human needs saving too in a way, haha... but save some is better than saving none smile.gif

That's IMHO lor. nod.gif
Each and everyone shud just do what they are capable to do... financially and emotionally. The rest? Up to the God lor (or higher power).

well... I used to rare hamsters when I was like 7 years old.
Start of with 2.
Eventually multiplied into more than 20+ shocking.gif
Gave them away.

Don't scold me.
I was young at that time. I know nothing. x.x

Now I'm really serious in this raring thingy
so need to ask for advice from you guys before I get them. smile.gif

Is it possible to keep 2 campbells together?
Will they eat each other up? shakehead.gif

and by the way... I'm not going to breed them.

You left out the injured hamster we saw yesterday. The hamster have 2-3 holes on it's head and all the hair gone and it's bleeding. The worse thing is, the other hamster is still attacking it in the tank. cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

QUOTE(blurjoey @ Dec 20 2007, 11:33 PM)
After COD the Kaytee Aspen beddings from Foo we went to Sunway Pyramid.

We were at Pets Lover Center and there is a new batch of Syrians in the shop. I saw mostly all Cinnamon banded and a few Cream banded. Very tempted to get but sangels didn't allow sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif Saw a little girl's mom bought her a Syrian. Saw the way the girl holding her Syrian was squeezing the Syrian very tightly. Wanted to tell her not to do that but can't. I wonder how long the Syrian will live with the little girl which is about 3-4 years old. Very sad.

From Pyramid we made our way to Taman Megah, hoping to find the Pet Family. We found it easily and another surprise was we saw another pet shop nearby called Pet's Buddy Station which was upstairs on the shoplots there. We went up and saw RCs about 1.5-2 inches long, fat and cute. Also an all black hamsters which we weren't sure which species it was. There were also gerbils there selling for RM30 and they are about 5+ inches long. Left the place as no one want to attend to us.

We walked over to Pet Family and found that it is a 2 storey shop. Downstairs is mostly fishes and upstairs have stuffs for small animals, dogs, cats and birds. There they have white color Winter White imported from Holland selling for RM30 each, Syrians which I think is about 4 months old cause they are as big as JackJack. Saw a few white color Syrians too. Mice, hedgehogs, guinea pigs and gerbils was for sale there also. Even a fat tail gerbil.

Missgeek - Saw 1 last Habitrail Safari Terrain wheel in Pet Family. Better go there to buy as I couldn't find any Sanko Wild 21cm wheels anywhere. tongue.gif  tongue.gif  tongue.gif

Then we went to Pet Safari and saw all the hamsters there and saw a Syrian which the face is cinnamon or golden but the body is grayish black in color. Not sure about which banded it is. There are also winter whites, robos and RC available besides Syrians. Saw a lady bought 5-7 cages and 50% off on the hamsters with the purchase of the cage. Presents maybe? The cages was small, I think more suitable for 1 dwarf hamster only. Toby Pets was happy to make such a big sale.

Felt very sad for the hamsters in all the pet shops seen today. Wish can rescue all of them but couldn't and won't be a good idea as the pet shops will restock. How many can we rescue? sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif

Anyway will support small pet shops like Pet Shack instead of these big pet shops. thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

PJ Hilton is too far from Taman Megah tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Do you know how to get to Kelana Jaya LRT station? If you are coming from Federal Highway, Motorola, Western Digital. Drive until you see a Nissan showroom on the left, Kelana Jaya LRT station on your right and some seafood restaurant (forgot the name) with a big crab on the sign board on the left. Stick on the left lane when you see the LRT station and go on the side to the traffic lights under the fly-over. Do not take the fly over. At the traffic lights, turn left and go straight. The first right turn, turn right and go straight for a bit. You will see Pet Family on your left with its big blue sign board.

There is a map here on their site...
