Don't be misled by the trailer, this is not that crazy ass Nicholas Cage ripping off John Wick. You don't get to watch crazy acting that much but it's his "Oscar" caliber performance and the gut wrenching ending that the movie slowly building up to. This film is more alike "You were never really here" than any of Hollywood mainstream "revenge" offerings. This is by far the best movie I've watched this year.

Like Beowulf, this is based on a medieval poem. It's not exactly one to one interpretation as they changed the ending a little. This is not your standard hack and slash movie but a very well made Oscar bait kind of movies. Stunning visual with amazing casting. Dev Patel puts out an Oscar worthy performance with very strong supporting cast of Alicia Vikander, Barry Keoghan, the all commanding voice of Ralph Ineson and of course Sean Harris as King Arthur. Like the structure of a poem, the narrative very floaty and abstract. Very Terry Gilliam.

A movie directorial debut of Lisa Joy, she's the writing partner and wife of Jonathan Nolan. She's responsible for the single best episode of Westworld. Sadly this is an unremarkable film that fails to be of any relevance. The cast, production value and filmmaking aspect are top notch, just that the script very uninspiring and sorta a pale imitation of Inception. It has too much baggage of disappointing aspect of Westworld. Complex mystery that didn't pay off very well.

Just watched Candyman. Expecting horror but met with strong sjw vibe, plus the mumbo jumbo "artist" talk. Wasted talent for Yahya Abdul-Mateen 2 and wasted my time, 0/10 avoid and not recommended at all.

Dune (2021)

user posted image

Hi Kiddies

Hope everyone here remains well.

This long awaited, second time adapted for movie 50 year old Frank Herbert's book is finally in Malaysia cinema.

I have very little recollection of the really messy 1984 Dune movie. I don't remember liking it (apparently, the studio meddled, and demanded edits, making the movie shorter and nonsensical. Although it had the singer, Sting.

Fast forward 16 years, and Scifi made two mini series, titled Frank Herbert's Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003) abet on a Scifi network budget. Even when I first watched it, back in the day, I thought the costumes were... horrendous (imagine a 1st year fashion school student's work).

The story is more comprehensible but until you watch Denis Villeneuve's (director) Dune, you have no idea how "expensive" the world of Frank Herbert's Dune is.

The casting, the script and the thought put into the world building is second to none.

I do not have access to Imax cinemas at this point in time, and I really REALLY wish I have.

This movie is breathtaking.

The only downside I can make about this movie is stated at the very beginning of the movie, namely the title, Dune, Part One.

This movie is now being exhibited outside of USA.

It will concurrently be release in the States at the cinema and HBO max.

Box office receipt will determine if Denis Villeneuve gets to do Part Two...

In my humble opinion, if you are a Sci Fiction fan and can visit a cinema safely, please do consider watching it a cinema.

A small screen will not do it Justice

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

I managed to catch this last week.

I was apprehensive going in...

I was actually afraid I would be let down by the movie.

5 minutes in, I was sold hook, line and sinker!

Can Tony Chiu-Wai Leung do not wrong.

Not according this this movie.

Can I find Awkwafina less annoying (Jumanji anyone?...). Apparently, I can find her less annoying.

Most surprising for me, was buying Simu Liu as Shang-Chi.

I have never seen him in other works and have to add, he did well here.

I was concern that it will go full Buddha Palm.

It manages to find a middle ground.

Script good, casting great.

What else can you ask for?

If you can safe visit your local cinema to watch this and you want to watch this, what are you waiting for?

The follow-up of Julia DuCournau who directed the excellent Raw few years back. I believe this one is this year's most WTF film. At first I thought this is Cronenberg-esque Crash of some sexual fetishes with cars. Yeah you get to see the actress effing a muscle car, making out with a lesbian and some serial killing here or there. Then it shift tones to a human connection storyline with a father that climax in a child birth. To be honest my brain got fried by what I'm watching and yet very intrigued with where things are going. File this under those weird ass art film by Nicolas Winding Refn or Lars Von Trier. I like it somehow but not as crazy loving it as with Raw. This year's Palme D'or winner and the second female director to do so.

F9 (2021)

I don't think I was even in their mindset when they made this movie.

I am way WAY outside of their demography...

I am too afraid to say anything more about this movie, seeing how the franchise has rabid fans....
