Hi all,

Maxis' representative came this morning to help me install their Maxis 4G USB Dongle to Maxis' router because I just convert to Maxis One Prime last week.

He insert the dongle to the USB port, tell me it's done, then I sign the form.

Later I only realized the dongle always showing red led (see attached picture), it never seems to be connected to the internet at all.

I unplug LAN cable that connect within TM's modem and Maxis' router (to make it no internet access) and the USB dongle also never connect to the network by showing red led.

I also tried plug in this USB dongle directly to my PC, it installed the driver, also never seems to get any internet access.

How to tell if this USB dongle (or the SIM card) is working?

Thank you in advanced! icon_rolleyes.gif

The usb dongle will turn blue colour if the sim card is activated. From your case it must be your sim card yet to be activated.Need to wait for 2 days for the sim card to be activated.Once you had received sms from maxis it means your sim card is activated & the usb dongle light once connected will turn blue.

Yes you are right, I received the SMS this morning and now I can see blue light.
However, still can't seems to get it to work.
I tried turn off TM's modem while keeping the USB dongle inserted to Maxis' router, I still can't get to the internet.
I also tried insert the dongle directly to PC, also not working. sad.gif

There are similar discussion here at this thread: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4698938/all
Some people also have blue light yet still can't get internet.
Did you ever update the software/firmware to the USB dongle?
I'm not sure if this is the culprit that cause the USB dongle to failed?

I believe the SIM itself have no problem but the dongle.
Already tried:
(1) Insert the backup SIM to phone, it can surf without problem.
(2) Insert my phone's SIM to USB dongle, cannot get it to work either

from the photo indicate you must insert the modem into the pc.FYi although you can plug your usb dongle into your pc & the usb dongle can shown blue light but due to maxis had lock the usb dongle thus the usb dongle will only work when you plug into the maxis tp-link router.

Yup! You are right, I plug it to PC just for testing purpose.
Because it can't seems to work on Maxis' TP-Link router so I try it on PC.

That was last night when Maxis Fibre were down for many people, so I have to try hard for this backup SIM to work.
There was once when I plug it to PC, it seems so have connection, then it ask new software is available and if I would like to update.
I clicked [Yes] then... never get it to work again since then... bangwall.gif
The update should came from either Maxis or ZTE, I can't tell when the message simply pops-up just like that. sad.gif

Hi friend,
I just would like to update you about the 4G USB modem issue.
Maxis sent a technician to look at my modem and the issue solved by upgrade the router firmware.
Now the 4G backup modem is working.

3. right click in the page -> Inspect Element
4. search for #auto_mode, double click on disabled="" on the highlighted line, delete it, press enter

The USB modem can't be used separately.
Remember, the sole purpose of the USB modem is to be a backup for your fibre Internet.

Pls note that there is a mac address lock in place... The dongle will only work properly with c5v with firmware 190304 because of dhcp addressing issue... BTW 190304 is the latest version of the routers firmware.
With the mac address lock... U will not be able to use the dongle anywhere else besides ur router.

Latest news.

The sim will not work on anything other than maxis routers or dongle. You maybe the lucky few whose sim is not locked to the maxis devices...

Your setup would be neat if you'd just replace the cheap customized locked ZTE Maxis 4G dongle which they supplied.
Just get one online instead which is unlocked which comes with stock firmware.

Just make sure you get a "hostless" 4G dongle which doesn't require additional software to connect.

I've used the backup Maxis SIM with a Huawei E3372H Hi-Link that has its own webgui and it worked flawlessly.

You can take a look here how I discovered Maxis ZTE works with other device: Ditch ONU, use GPON SFP on Business Grade Router

I've used the backup Maxis SIM with a Huawei E3372H Hi-Link that has its own webgui and it worked flawlessly.

any way to flash Maxis ZTE dongle to stock firmware??

Yes, just set your Windows Computer Name (Hostname)

in Linux, you can send DHCP Option 12 to dongle without change Hostname

Yes. On linux you could just do :
CODE

ifconfig usb0 up
dhcpcd -1 -h Maxis_Archer_C5v usb0
route add default gw 192.168.0.1

And I stumbled upon this file while poking around on the AR2140 router :

I thought it would be helpful for whoever encounters issue whilst setting up the usb modem

Thank you very much. Finally figured out thanks to your tip. Maxis is sneaky.

I’ve successfully gotten it working on my computer just like you to verify it. Then changed the setting on my ASUS AC86U stock firmware via web GUI.

And everything works as it should, simulated by turning off the modem.

What motivated me to do this was that Maxis fiber was really down and the dongle not working is irritating since I’ve got ASUS AiMesh setup for my home.

EDIT: don’t need to unlock one lah. But I think if you abuse this backup dongle Maxis will banhammer it.

Yes, no need mess with the Dongle Firmware, just DHCP Option 12:
Attached Image

I use 4G Backup as Internet Fail Over, I simply set Route Distance/Metic:
Fiber: Metric 3
LTE: Metric 5

when Fiber down, automatic to LTE

even if successful unlock it, now Maxis can still suspend your 4G backup dongle simcard if you use it other than its device

installed 100Mbps fibre last month.
pre-installation, they gave wireless dongle + router.
upon installation of fibre + another router, i returned the pre-installation router; but they told me no need to return the dongle, to re-use the dongle as backup, but they just replaced the pre-installation SIM meant for 4G wireless with new SIM meant for fibre backup.

few days after, the fibre installer called me to give a backup dongle that was meant as my backup dongle. but i informed him maxis centre already set me up to just continue using pre-installation dongle as backup, so he said then he don't need to come since already completed if like that.

(even maxis centre don't know why their SOP is, fibre installer will install new same-model router, and the one supplied pre-installation is then supposed to be returned.)

Thnk for the info. For me, I already install the fiber few months before. Last week change my prepaid to maxis postpaid. I ask for backup sim, and they give me the sim but not the dongle.

thanks it still works
now, I want to reuse this dongle for non Maxis SIM, and it seems like I need to manually click on "connect" every time for it
poking around, it seems like it makes the following request, putting here for reference

CODE
curl "http://192.168.0.1/goform/goform_set_cmd_process" -X POST -H "User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:126.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/126.0" -H "Accept: application/json, text/javascript, */*; q=0.01" -H "Accept-Language: en-US,en;q=0.5" -H "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate" -H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded; charset=UTF-8" -H "X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest" -H "Origin: http://192.168.0.1" -H "DNT: 1" -H "Connection: keep-alive" -H "Referer: http://192.168.0.1/index.html" -H "Sec-GPC: 1" -H "Priority: u=1" --data-raw "isTest=false&notCallback=true&goformId=CONNECT_NETWORK"

the important part seems to be sending "isTest=false&notCallback=true&goformId=CONNECT_NETWORK" to "http://192.168.0.1/goform/goform_set_cmd_process"

im testing it with a openwrt router

I just bought this dongle off Carousell.

It works with C5V and also my D-Link's DWR-118. LED turns blue with other nonMaxis sim and can get internet.

I tried other routers (TL-902WR, DIR-506), LED turns blue but no internet.

Coincidentally I also cannot pull up the dongle's web-based management page. Can anyone help? I'd like to see if when plugged onto TL-902WR and DIR506 I can try to connect to the Internet manually,

so, here's the deal

the dongle, is locked to c5v but not locked to maxis sim
the other maxis provided routers also say they're a c5v to the usb dongle to make it work

it may have worked with the dlink briefly as with my experience
it works briefly
then it automatically downloads a firmware update, which locks things out

if you are using an advanced router that lets you send a custom hostname to the device, such as using an OpenWRT router, send "Maxis_Archer_C5v" as the hostname to the dongle, then it works

not sure what the ip address as it auto opens ufi.ztedevice.com for me
but the connect button is greyed out and disabled, even if you use inspect element to press it, it will connect but refuse to talk with the host router if it doesnt say it is a "Maxis_Archer_C5v"

Thanks - I tried that address but it doesn't open up. The dongle has been working with my DWR-118 for more than a month now (recently bought as in At least April)
