Hi, I'm STPM 2011, CGPA 3.5, and already registered in upu.
UMS chem engineer is my first choice in the upu eight choices...how's this course in this uni?
How about the education quality and student life in UMS? I would like to study in a good environment, and at the same time play hard so that my four years uni life and leaving home will not be wasted. Thanks

Well, let me share you some info here.

With 3.5, you have a chance of entering this course. But bare in mind that it also depends on the availability in this course. This course used to take in 60-70 students, but the amount have been halved. Therefore, now its around 35 students only. So, the competition is strong, but u get to study in a better environment. Less students, the lecturer can teach better. Let's get the overall of this course. To me, this course is still maturing, compared to other public universities. We have some very good lecturers. Well, please be prepared for course. The main flaw in this university is that the facilities is not up to par. Many instruments are broken down but not being fixed or upgraded. Hence, for your FYP please choose wisely. There will be seniors helping you out. This is because we have established a one senior one junior system since my year. I not sure whether the juniors are still carrying out or not. But overall the environment is good. The people in Sabah is friendly. But be prepared that you won't be spoon feeded, have to work very hard in order to get good results. Of course, you can join sorts of activities organized by the course itself or the school. Our course did participate in the NACES (National Chemical Engineering Symposium) and the Chem-E-Car Competition, you may ask the seniors about this.

If you do get a place in UMS. You will be more independent, that one thing i am very sure about. If you want to have fun, please go travel around in your 1,2, and 3 year. 4th year you will see hell... hahaha.. dun complain too much there cause no use complaining, just work it out. Sorry for talking so much, let me summarise it.

Education quality - 2.5/5,
Cons - facilities are not very good (lab especially), got many experienced lecturer but may not be good in teaching
Pros - learn more to be independent (which is helping me now in working life)

Student life - 5/5
Very nice environment to study, you can have fun and study at the same time.

FYI, i studied there for 4 years. At the final years, I felt it was the worst year for me. Cause i do not understand a thing about plant design, and the lecturers are not guiding properly. but somehow i manage to do it. =). My final year project's title is very interesting, but sad to say i do not have the lab equipment to do anything to get my results, but i still manage to get an A for it. hahaha.. if you get into the uni, i can tell you more then. This course is quite fresh in my opinion. but do not worried, this course i recognized by BEM (Board of Engineers).

wow, nice info u provided, thanks biggrin.gif
I though most of the public uni were well equip with good and advanced facilities from the subsidies of government.
Which means we have to work out ourselves, be independent and manage our time well..

erm..somehow i do not why the facilities are not well maintained. either the school tarak budget or the students are very naughty. haha. But what i mean getting independent is that, you can try to find the instrument you need around the university. maybe not in your school but other schools/faculties. Therefore, you need to go here and there, ask here and there and etc.. hahaha.. can improve your communication skills as well.. lolz..

If you ask me, i would say yes based on my experience. But it mainly depends on the standard of CPGA of students spplying these courses. So, i would say in terms of percentage is 65% you may get a place in any of the courses. Food science might be a bit more difficult to get due to its popularity. No problem. just apply.. =)

hahaha.. beautiful is beautiful.. maybe outlook.. haha.. sorry i still think UMS still have a long way to go before reaching that 'GOOD' university status, many things need to be improve. Anyhow, if you were able to go into this Food School, they have good dean and their facilities are well maintained. they have also achieved few achievements in the food industries. Last year they represented Malaysia for a food quiz competition in Thailand. hahaha.. To me UPM is still the best food uni in Malaysia. UMS is not bad in this sector thou. =)

Hi everyone,

Do you guys mind to tell me more about UMS? My gf got CGPA 3.85. her last 4 pilihan is for UMS business courses.

one of my friend is from sabah, and she told me that business course in UMS is full of malays. Sorry that I might seems to be racist. But what I think is that the inequality in classes and attitude of the malays.

I understand there are majority of malays are great and educated. somehow, there are minority malay who disappoint people with foolish action. vandalizing, bullying, and any other crimes. ofcourse not only malay do it. chinese and indian do it too.

Sorry if I offended you. but I'm just worried. cuz I listen too much of crimes in university. for example, Lim Kokwing university blacks rape chinese girl case, and threw her down to cliff. nearby tar college malays rape girl at lrt case. and alot more about UMS rape and crimes. refer to following links:

3.85 also need to apply Sabah? haha.. Ok, I do not know who is your friend but i think your friend is wrong about UMS. UMS is not full of Malays, they are full of BUMIPUTERAS.. your friend might mix up this two terms. Malay is one of the Bumis. There will be kadazan, dusun, bajau, melanau. and etc. And trust me, they are very nice people. One thing for sure, UMS does not have much foreign students. I think there will be a number of China students. Other countries i seldom see. Maybe some Arab and Africa students. If you want to compare this university with the university in KL, I believe this uni is much more safer. Crimes happens anywhere. but as long as you take precautions about it, I think it should be ok. Ok, about UMS rape cases, i have heard this as well, but so far, 4 years in my stay there, it has been peaceful. Just do not provoke the crime to happen. For example, I have some friends, 'letting' his laptop/valuable visible. That can provoke as well. Anyway, in the university, just do not wonder around alone in the area, then it should be ok. I have been to library at midnite and after midnite, walking back to my hostel. No problem, of course with a few friends.

Sorry, from here I can see some prejudice from you. Anyhow, in my opinion, you should not be scared of inequality and attidude of any students, you just have to suck it up, do your best to get the results you want to. You may argue it's not fair, well to me, the world is not fair anyway.

Finally, UMS is not as bad as you think. In fact, the Sabah people are very nice, kind and quite patience unlike Malaysian in the West. And trust me, you will feel like 1 Malaysia there. But of course, things kinda slow in Sabah. hahaha.. About business school, the bussiness school in UMS is quite famous and have some recognition in the country. They participate actively in many bussiness related competition and the SIFE organization. No worries, by the way, with that result i think your gf will get a place in the West public unis. =)
