I have a few questions to those studying here.. =)

is it convinient to acess to shopping centres to buy supplies like (fruits,clothes..etc) and how far is it from UMS?
Is chinese food stalls nearby? Possible to reach there by walking?Or have to drive?

I intend to apply UMS food science and nutrition.HS04
I heard that after graduate from this course, i will be able to be nutrionist/dietician when i further for masters=) Is it true?
My cgpa only 3.0 science stream...
Thanks in advance .. smile.gif

Hi,

Yes u may take bus to the chinese restaurant. There are university bus to take you there, but mind that the bus is not very efficient and on time. If you take the food science, maybe you can become a nutritionist but not dietician. Government Hospital only approves nutritionist and dietician course fo this post. Normally food science, some companies they do hire them as nutritionist. Normally those health company like slimming companies.

It's no use even you take masters/phD, u still cannot become a 'real' nutritionist/dietician. Bear in mind that even nutritionist and dietician is different. Food Tech involves more in how to make the food. Food science you learn about food. Simple terms to differenciate this.

Obviously you are gonna learn about environmental stuffs. hahaha.. just the general explanation thou. Environmental science involves global warming, pollution and etc lo. but i'm not very familiar la. If you ask me environmental engineering then i will know about it. hahaha. Most probably after your study in this course, you will be more on lab based working environment. Where u will test water, test the air, test chemicals, and etc lo. All relates back to environment. =) Do some research on your own too. Not very sure.

I am a ex-UMS graduate. hahaha.. I'm in the engineering school previously, therefore, i am more familiar with that. Anyhow if you are taking the environmental science course, your school will be called SST (Sekolah Sains and Teknologi). The biggest school in UMS. They have also internship overseas and have some famous lecturers. That's what i heard la. hahaha.

What can a food science graduate do? Sadly, a friend's son graduated from UMS to work as a "salesman" with a bank and got terminated after 6 months for failing to meet impossible quotas. Was informed that without experience difficult to get jobs in foods manufacturing companies.

not very good baru go there ma.. hahaha.. STPM i'm taking.. haha.. icic, well depending on the course you are interested. Environmental science i would say the job demand is there la as long as you dun choose job. I would encourage you to take until phD la.. cause this is a science course, if you want good pay in few years time, phD is the way, no need to study very hard.. just study smart and hard will do.. =)) enjoy the process only then eventually you will get the good results.. =)

As i have mentioned, food science you can go into research of those private companies. Big companies like nestle, kraft, kelly's ingredient, mamee, dutch lady and etc, they do take fresh graduates of food science into their company either by management trainee or nutritionist. BUT, there will always be a BUT. For those big food and beverages company, the fresh graduates will face a very stiff and strong competition among themselves, cause they dun take much fresh grads. So normally those with first class will get a chance with them. of course some companies will look at your soft skills and communication skills as well. Food science have a slightly disadvantage against someone who took nutritionist.

Very rare company does food research in Malaysia, even it does, its more to manufacturing purposes. Therefore, you may stay in the university to do your masters and phDs. UPM is quite good with their food course. I would say one of the best in Malaysia. UMS is picking up cause there are alot of skilful lecturers there.

Many of friends came out from food science, took their MBA, some found job in food and beverages industry and some of course become a salesman as your friend's son did. Trust me, food and beverages is a big field, if they do not choose jobs, they can find a job with their degree. Many ppl failed to do so cause normally food and beverages job is kinda tough and busy. They will always have business even downturn. haha.. =)

Agreed with you that if one is among the top in the cohort it would be easier to look for a job. Those in the bottom third with poor soft skills will struggle.

hahaha... dun think of only brilliant mind can take phD.. I have friends that have low cpga in degree taking their masters.. If you can survive degree, masters is not problem.. maybe phD is difficult, but once you have passion in it.. its not difficult.. =)
