As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Drop 2 points .. I think we played well despite the crisis we had in the first half. Few good chances and smalling should have throw himself for that last moment chance.

The most suprising thing is Young manage to do well against Mane. That is worst compared to getting pocketed by Shaw for Mane.

One thing is that both sets of players forgot about the rivalry between united and poo. Damn soft, no fight between players. 50/50 pull out. End of game, some players (pogba) hug opponent. No respect to fans. You won't see barca and real players hugging after el clasico.

Here’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s response. He says Lingard, Mata and Herrera all have hamstring injuries:

QUOTE
You’ve always got to be ready for everything, but losing three players in the first half with hamstring injuries, and probably we should have taken Marcus off as well. Henderson went through him in the first minute and that was just one of many fouls on him today. I was very concerned, but he’s a warrior and he’s a Manc, and he knows what this means. We had to keep him on, because we’d already used three subs.

You come out with so many positives today. The fans, they were the 11th man today because we had half a Marcus. I can’t remember David having to make a save. We kept them out of it and we created a couple of chances where we could have scored.

We’ve lost a few with muscle injuries, hamstrings. But we’ve got some good kids coming through. We’ll have 11 players on the pitch on Wednesday night as well.

Rashford might not be fit to start on Wednesday. Lukaku, Sanchez, Chong?

One thing is that both sets of players forgot about the rivalry between united and poo. Damn soft, no fight between players. 50/50 pull out. End of game, some players (pogba) hug opponent. No respect to fans. You won't see barca and real players hugging after el clasico.
*
nowadays is diff... even the coaches are praising each other before the game.
this social media era has soften the players..lolz . hardly see any hard raw passion in the game anymore.
the SAF-Wenger and SAF-Benitez rivalry were really intense back in the days, which was reflected on the pitch.

Hamstring injury. Going to be at least 2 weeks. If rushed will be like Lingard.

Because we are not fighting for the league.
Anyway, less mind games among the managers now.

no breaking of legs la... Just don't pull out if they have a chance of winning the ball. If herrera was on the pitch till the end, i have full confidence we could have won the game.

scott minoy tried hard but still need to improve on vision and passing.
a few times lose the ball due to gegenpressing.
a. perreira did well, but without herreira linking df - mf - st play, tough job indeed.

a sanchez got into good position but lukaku lack the vision, same like rashford where both only do short pass link play, things could hav go differently if u bombard the ball to sanchez. haih

against psg,
scott minoy - fred - perreira
sanchez
lukaku - rashford(greenwood) provided rash is fit to play.

back in mou era, conlanfirm he will park the bus and def 90mins
ole era, ATK ATK ATK, counter ATK! smailing up front ATK~ lol! Interesting match but unlucky to get a draw.. should hav scored and get the 3 points.

Manchester United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez can "step up" as the Red Devils could be without nine senior players against Crystal Palace.

Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata were injured during the first half of Sunday's match against Liverpool.

Marcus Rashford played most of the 0-0 draw with an ankle injury and is a doubt for Wednesday's fixture.

Teenagers Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and Jimmy Garner will be involved.

Gomes, 18, is the only one of the academy trio to have made a Premier League appearance.

As well as Herrera, Lingard and Mata, United will be without defenders Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian, midfielder Nemanja Matic and forward Anthony Martial at Selhurst Park.

Argentina centre-back Marcos Rojo, who has made just three appearances this season, will also be involved after returning from a long-term injury.

"There are not a lot of positives," said Solskjaer, who is waiting to see how Rashford responds to treatment on his ankle.

Solskjaer told MUTV the England striker's injury was not made worse by playing the full game and it was "not as bad as we first feared".

"We're going to work on him for as long as we can to see if he gets ready," he said.

The Norwegian said Wednesday's game gives Lukaku and Sanchez "a chance to play to their potential".

"The two get on very well," he said. "Hopefully Alexis and Romelu can step up. We will have a good team out on the pitch."

Martial was injured during the home defeat by Paris St-Germain on 12 February, and Solskjaer said the Frenchman could return for Saturday's home Premier League game against Southampton.

Lingard replaced Mata during Sunday's game but lasted just 18 minutes before suffering a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

"Jesse was eager, ticked all the boxes, maybe it was a couple of days early," said Solskjaer. "It was Liverpool. He was desperate to play."

United go into Wednesday's game fifth in the table, a point behind Arsenal in fourth.

dun look down on cp. we nv win comfortably against them. 10 first team players down due injury will always have an impact to the team no matter how good the squad is. cp will be relishing their chances tonight. hope we can catch them on a break

yea... OGS have to change his tactic tonight... with our current squad... we cant press them from the beginning... we can only counter them whenever possible... and hopefully our no.7 at least buckle the damn up tonight.... sweat.gif sweat.gif

Man Utd injuries linked to increased workload says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

QUOTE
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the increased workload he is demanding of Manchester United's players is partly responsible for the recent spate of injuries.

United could be without nine senior players for Wednesday's Premier League game at Crystal Palace.

This includes Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard, who all injured hamstrings in the draw with Liverpool.

"It's probably linked, yes," said United's caretaker manager, when asked about the connection.

Under former boss Jose Mourinho, United's running statistics - both in terms of distance covered and sprints made - were some of the lowest in the Premier League.

Solskjaer has tried to do something about that but the drive to do more has come at a cost.

Nemanja Matic, Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia, Anthony Martial and Matteo Darmian are also out of the game at Selhurst Park, while Marcus Rashford faces a fitness test on the ankle injury he sustained in the opening minutes of Sunday's game when he was tackled by Jordan Henderson.

Although United's overall running stats have gone down - from 108.1km per game for the entire team when Mourinho was in charge this season, to 107.7km under Solskjaer - United's total sprints under the Norwegian have increased from 98.6 to 108.6 per game.

Solskjaer said: "When do you make the change? Do you wait until pre-season and think you will change results by not asking them to run. Or do we start now and show them what the demands of intensity are and how we want to play?

"You have seen what I have chosen. We need to play as a Manchester United team. If you want to be a part of Manchester United, it's a survival of the fittest isn't it?"

Surprised, worst player on the pitch by far is not lukaku or sanchez but fred!

How on earth he is in brazil national team.

Lukaku and shaw is standout performer. Sanchez is decent

Fred lost his confidence. Few misplaced passes in early minutes, always facing his own goal, just played backward passes and picked a safer routes. I believe he'll become good. But prefer Pereira at this moment, though both are different type of CM.

Soton are more important match, will not care much about PSG. Just play our best (and fit) players, worry about PSG later.

i mean to be fair also... his squad have been long time ever won anything... none of them know whats the feeling of winning a trophy... lol... but im sure the coach have to be responsible in encouraging them also... but they always potong steam towards the crucial stage of the season... its good that we can see clearer what are we going to get from poch... macam wenger aje... main cantik2 tapi usually cant win anything... blink.gif blink.gif

Why we need Kante when we have Matic & Mctominay?

We need more depth in our midfield. McTominay is not convincing so far to take over Matic position. Even though we manage to win without Matic against CP, that doesn't mean that we have enough good midfielder.

Former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini scored the winner for Shandong Luneng in a 1-0 victory on his Chinese Super League debut.

He turned and scored from close range in the 50th minute of the season opener against Beijing Renhe.

The Belgian, 31, completed a move to Shandong last month after five and a half seasons at Old Trafford.

He scored 22 goals in 177 games for United, after joining them from Everton for £27m in 2014.

Give him another year to prove himself, he need more game in order to reach that level.

Kante will not be cheap as well, Matic still has few years left and i think by that time McTominay might step up.

QUOTE
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says if expectations change at the club they may need to find "another magic guy" to deliver regular Premier League and Champions League titles.
.
.
The Argentine has accepted that challenging Liverpool and Manchester City for the title is now "impossible"; while Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have closed the gap as the competition for a top-four spot increases.

"My doubt is not about my future here," said Pochettino. "After five years, I really believe we do a fantastic job for the club.

"If now the expectation is that it is not enough to play well, be a contender for top four and be in the Champions League for the third year in a row, if now the obligation is that it is compulsory to win a title because we are doing so well, you need to compare with other teams.

"In that comparison, you can be fair or unfair in your opinion. People judge us and put pressure on us if we have not won a trophy. Is that fair or not fair?

"If we compete with the same tools or different tools? If we [are] at the same level or not?
.
.
"I cannot change opinions and everyone can judge us in a different way. That's why I told you that, maybe if Daniel [Levy - Spurs chairman] said to me next season, 'We need to win a title, we need to win the Champions League and we need to win the Premier League', then maybe you need to find another magic guy who can do this."

Now did Poch just talked himself out of contention for the vacancy at Old Trafford? hmm.gif

really roller coaster emotion. this is what mu about.

lukaku is really upping his game to stake a claim for first 11 again. can't remember ddg made any save lol. like spain aje. ap redeem himself in last 2 games after horror show vs burnley.

sanchez boleh jual or become subs on game that sure win la. no hope d. first soton goal, he no cover that side. and it's no coincidence we score when he sub out. psg sub him, game gg.

ole sure won't start him in psg game.

No Sanchez, immediately plays better. He always disturb the flow between Pogba & Shaw. DDG purposely play bad to force contract signing? And damn u Pogba for being greedy. Kasi chance la Lukaku hatrick.

All great goals from both teams today.
Though I feel De Gea could have done better for the goals he conceded today.
Boy that Perreira guy is good. Not only because he scored but his movements and play are impressive.
Lukaku is strong and he takes his shots quickly, catching the keeper off guard.

Lukaku need to be more direct. He can bully most of BPL defenders if play it more simple and use his strength to max. He have a poor first touch, So-so dribbling ability.

Sanchez should go to MLS. Arsenal got the better deal out of that swap. Who knows Mkhi might have flourished under Ole. Hindsight..

Our #7 really cursed since Owen wore that number. Trojan horse sent by Pool? Lulz. Since he left, Valencia got that number and turn to shit attacking wise. Even after he change back number to his old one his attacking ability disappeared. Di Maria, Depay.. Now Sanchez. All taik for us. Damn it.

Like to see the non-first choice step up their game, after what I see an off-from of Rashford and even David De Gea?

Pereira scored.
Lukaku scored, after assist from Pereira.
Lukaku scored again, after assist from Fred (whom replaced Pereira few minutes earlier).

But - Sanchez still, Sanchez.

inb4, Diogo Dalot replaced Sanchez (injured), and Pereira got goal after Dalot's pass.

What a game, I had the gut feeling we could pinch it. Was worried when saw Perreira on the team sheet and indeed in the beginning when he looked isolated.

Lukaku also was out of sorts when not in the box. He really belongs to the opposition box, alas we need his big body to defend.

A good show by these two to prove me my doubts wrong.

Am I the only one secretly glad our piano player got subbed out? I knew when he got subbed out we had a chance. I’ve not been more disappointed by a South American player...this includes Veron and Forlan. Maybe he’ll need another 2 months to regain his fitness again. By then he’ll say he needs the benefit of a full preseason again.

We can try a front 3 of Martial - Rashford - Lukaku with both Rash & Lukaku do interchange of positions as & when needed.

Agree. Both Southampton goals are not his fault and nothing much DDG can do apart from notworthy.gif the quality of the strikes.
James Ward-Prowse is known for his set piece qualities so didn't we do any homework on that? hmm.gif

QUOTE
Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an update on Alexis Sanchez's injury.

The Chilean was hurt at the start of the second half, as the Reds won 3-2 in an entertaining clash, following an awkward collision inside the Saints' penalty area.

Clearly frustrated at having to leave the field, after providing some telling passes in the opening period, he made way for substitute Diogo Dalot.

“We don't know yet,” said Ole. “He got a knock on his knee. It might be his ligaments. We'll do the scan tomorrow.

”Hopefully, it won't be too bad but we won't know until we've done the scans. Of course, we'll have to wait until then.“

Any ligament damage would surely sideline the 30-year-old. Marcus Rashford played the full 90 minutes to prove his fitness ahead of the Paris Saint-Germain tie in the Champions League in midweek.

Paul Pogba is suspended for the match in his homeland, of course, but there could be a hope Anthony Martial is available to take the spot on the left flank.

The Reds trail 2-0 from the first leg at Old Trafford but confidence remains high in the camp.

Sanchez is taking about 400k per week, i doubt Woodward would continue to keep him on this situation, most likely has to sell him off cheaper and free up the wages for DDG and others.

I think the midfield battle is how to nullify Verati. Such a silky player. Anyhow that does not give us the 2 goals we need so we can only hope for a miracle from Ole in terms of tactics.

We maybe had our hopes a little too high in the first leg.

Players are clearly tired and exhausted ATM, with so much of injury and suspend.
To be honest, the chance we can win over PSG away is really low.
I would rather Ole give up on CL and prepare for Arsenal match.
But I know he won't

Realistically if MU already down 1 goal (total 3 goals) in half time.
He should sub Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes in, let them learn.
And give Lindelof, Shaw, Young some rest.
These 3 players already played non-stop for months.

Talk about future, if 4-3-3 formation is continue to be used, then between Lukaku and Rashford, only one should stay in MU.

Rashford is never a winger, not to mention Lukaku.
Both can only perform when they are in CF position.
Look at Rashford during Southampton match, look uncomfortable, under perform, just like old days during Mourinho era.

But Lukuka is even worse if being put on winger position, that's why Ole choose to sacrifice Rashford, but that's not gonna work.
Since both won't satisfied being use as 2nd choice, we need to sell one.
And it is no-brainer to sell Lukaku.

Remember his long goal drought even during Mourinho era, even being used as CF in every match?
He is not consistent enough + slow to be MU 1st choice CF.
He is strong in physical, but we need a striker with speed to match with the whole attacking style of MU.

*
Why need to sell one of them? United got 4 strikers during Ole playing days including Cole, yorke and sheringham. As long as they can accept the boss will rotate to play them okay la.

Lukaku and Rashford can co exist. We paid a lot or Lukaku, and no bigger (or lesser) clubs pursuit him in public.
There's always an injuries, lots of games and loss of form.
OGS seem very flexible in tactics and formations. Lots of attacking options perfectly suit him.

Dilemma for us though. A win for us would strengthen our chance of getting into UCL next season and pool getting the upper hands in the league. If they win the league, we need to listen to their bragging for 100 years. On the other hand, if we lose, might not get into UCL next season. Ughhh....

QUOTE
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated he will now solely use Andreas Pereira as an attacking midfielder for Manchester United.

Pereira scored his first Premier League goal for the club to equalise against Southampton in United's euphoric 3-2 comeback, as Solskjaer recalled the Brazilian at the expense of Fred.
QUOTE
Pereira was played further forward against Southampton and Solskjaer suggested he will continue to play in a more advanced role.

"So pleased for him and so happy for him," Solskjaer said. "He's gone through the academy, we know what he's capable of. He's got loads of energy, drive, we maybe found a better position for him than as a number six, more of an eight or 10.

"He's got high energy quality in his passing, crossing and shooting. So pleased for him, a goal and an assist, it's a nice day for him to remember.
QUOTE
After the game, Pereira said: “It’s my best day and my first Premier League goal after a difficult game, so very, very happy. There were a lot of beautiful goals in the game. [It was] a difficult day for the 'keepers."

"When I received [the ball], I saw Luke[Shaw] on my left and thought I would give it him, but it was so nice on my right and I practiced in training the day before, which gave me a lot of confidence, because I put four in the top corner yesterday.

"So today I had a good feeling and went for it.”

I already said what, news also got said,
The main issue is Lukaku doesn't want to be rotated, he want long term position as 11 man lineup,
that's why rumored he wanna go Juventus.

And same applied to Rashford, if die die want to use Lukaku as main CF,
then Rashford will be put on right winger.
But as I said, it is not gonna work for him.

No dilemma regardless who will be the champion. Our priority is to get the maximum points and qualify for UCL. Of course as a fan, we don't want certain club to win. Will be rooting for the noisy neighbour to win and also us to be top 4! Remaining 9 games not easy for the top 6 teams. Top 4 still up for grab, Champions still up for grab. Interesting season!

MATCH FACTS

No club has ever progressed to the next round of the Champions League after losing the first leg of a knockout match at home by two or more goals (34 previous cases).

Paris St-Germain have lost just one of their last 16 Champions League games at home (W10 D5), but that defeat came in the last 16 last season against Real Madrid (1-2).

None of the last six English sides to face Paris St-Germain at the Parc des Princes have won. In fact, the only English team to prevail away from home versus PSG were Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in September 2004 (3-0).

Four of the last five two-legged encounters between teams from England and France in the Champions League knockout phase have seen the French side progress.

PSG have scored 35 goals in their last 10 Champions League home games but haven't kept a clean sheet in each of the last five.

Manchester United have won only one of their last 10 Champions League knockout games (D3 L6), with this coming against Olympiakos in March 2014 (3-0 at Old Trafford). Their last away win in the knockout stages came eight years ago against Schalke (2-0), in April 2011.

Manchester United have lost their last two Champions League matches (1-2 away in Valencia in the final group stage match, 0-2 defeat to PSG in the first leg of this tie). They haven't lost three games in succession in the competition since March 2005.

The heaviest margin of defeat that Manchester United have suffered over a two-legged European tie is by three goals; in the 1957/58 European Cup semi-final versus AC Milan (2-5 on aggregate) and in the 1991/92 Cup Winners' Cup Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid (1-4 on aggregate).

Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappé has found the net in six of his seven Champions League appearances against British clubs (6 goals in total). He has scored 14 goals in the Champions League; two more than any other player has netted as an under-21 player in the history of the competition (Karim Benzema is the next best with 12 goals).

Marcus Rashford has scored only one goal in his last nine Champions League games (6 starts), that came in Manchester Utd's last away match against Valencia in December. He was the only Manchester Utd player to register a shot on target in the first leg against Paris St-Germain.
