from the info so far i read, for existing customers....

1. u sign new contract 24 months x rm10 pm to get this new box... looks like u can use old+new, i.e. 2... max 1+3 = 4 for one account.
it is unclear if it means the additional boxes will run as STB to get 4k/hd channels or like other boxes using the app to get SD/poor hd quality...?

2. or "upgrade" to one of those new packages with 2 yr contract.
problem is there are many who are now paying rm189, 179, 169, 159... for 300, 500, 800mbps.
nobody will "upgrade" from 800 to 300mbps and pay more (RM199) just to get the new box!!

my conclusion - for existing customers who previously had free upgrades >300mbps and paying <rm199, this new box offer is meaningless.

perhaps just wait... later in the year, some other offers may come out..?

if your old STB is kaput, no more warranty...

and there are many channels in 4k/HD in unifi tv by using this new box.... then it may be worth it.

if not, u r right... u can get similar box for rm100 to do playtv app... and many other apps.

this is the curiosity now...

can the new box, on wifi, work like a normal unifi STB on lan4 using built in app, to get the best quality PQ, and not the crappy playtv apk quality?

i think it is the latter... so, unifi may also be trying to sell the new box like any other android box but at 2x the price and only 2+8gb.

can't do much with it, more so if they put all kinds of restrictions to protect themselves from warranty and accidental mistakes requiring service trips.

netflix 4k, u can dream about it.

if u r right, and i think you will be... using the new box on wifi is no diff from using other box with playtv apk.

that means it is pretty useless...

it is just a 2+8gb amlogic s905x2 box... sure u can install other apps... netflix will be 480p for sure.... what for?



i am only interested in this new box to the extent (i assume) that if i use it with lan4, it will give me the 4k/hd unifitv+bbc iplayer+others if i wish.

no interest with the low grade playtv app or other apps as this can be achieved with a much cheaper box... rm160 can get 4+64gb s905x3 android9 now.

this is an excellent point, everybody is asking.

why unifitv (and astri) is so slow in going HD and 4K over internet/wifi when so many others have done it, even dd5.1 audio and works smoothly?

there can only be one answer - they want CONTROL of their best quality stuff - with their own decoders, STBs... to block/minimize piracy.

unlike netlflix which probably has spent billions in developing their own security and blocks, the others are still babies learning how to do it or no money to do it.

the SCM movies of unifitv (worse with playtv) are not in HD alto they claim.

if u had ever watched the same SCM stuff that originates from taiwan/hong kong/china, u will see the diff - those are in HD.

quite sure it is just unifi not paying the higher price for HD but just 576/540 but call it hd.

aotg, to me, has improved a lot in the last 2 years.

alto there isn't any 4k content, the HD ones are good enough, a couple of notches better than the "hd" of playtv.

some the best ones incl aec, afn, fn, iqiyi, celestial hd are excellent - video is as good as netflix hd, imo. supersports also good enough.

that app is v1.2.10 for new users or those migrated.

did u try older v7.9.8 or 7.9.11?

Yes, it is there in ATV playstore.... but same, not working.

I have old silver STB, dun have bbc player there alto ultimate.

I just checked my sharp ATV... yes, it is there, install, log in.... auto detect unifi connection, no id, pw reqd.

Reasonable stuff... in hd.
It is there, check again... search bbc player, player....

Looks like yr sony bravia ATV version may be too old...

Yes, this bbc player app is also now in regular android google playstore.

Navigate with mouse... the ATG version can do with remote.

Essentially same app, both started oct 2019.

So, any ultimate user wanting this bbc player app, it is now available on any android device, regular or ATV.

the PLAYTV app currently v7.9.11 does not work on ATV; older v7.9.8 works but will die later.
this is the annoying part - seems they wanna kill it for ATV - too bad for the sonys and sharps.
the new gen PLAYTV now v1.2.10... for those migrated or new subscribers... not sure, but i think will also not work on ATV.

bbc player... possible regular android app was there for some time... i just saw the update oct 2019.
for ATV, that version, as said by someone already, is rather new.

this was what i had been suspecting...

the new box may be a major shift towards "playtv apk" std ONLY - wifi, low bit rate... no different from other compatible boxes now doing playtv app.

if that will be true, some of us need to hold on to the old STB's/Lan4 as the PQ is much better!

the playtv app PQ sucks!

will be hearing what actual users have to say in next few days.

bbc player app - u can find in playstore of any android device, regular or ATV.

working Unifi playtv apk for ATV does not exist at this time.

8mbps is fine, 2.8 is not!

really, even the ahem streams i get are in the range 8-12mbps.

which is why i dun use the old app in like 10 years alto i know it works.

it's only good for tiny phone screens.

if yr tv is 1080p, that's the best u get, even when the stream is 4k... i.e. downgraded.

well... u should buy 4k tv for other reasons - netflix 4k, astro 4k, own playback 4k, etc...

becos unifi has 1, yes... ONE 4k channel only - 502.

That, we wait for the first users to report back this weekend.
Netflix 4k streams, highly compressed, are 12-18mbps, if i remember correctly.
I wud think unifi has some way to degrade the quality for other boxes, if n when they allow it to work at all.
They will want to hold some advantage with new box at least for some time... to sign up as many as possible.
Ir other boxes can do same as theirs, their rm240 box can never sell!

to get new box, u can upgrade back to 300mbps or pay rm10 for 24 months contract.
