why u guys use thermal paste so much?

I've bought the smallest AS-5 and after 4 times applying, i think i still can apply another 10 times.

Note, there is VERY LITTLE thermal paste needed, size of half rice grain...

and I can get 10dC improvement (before burn-in) from stock intel cooler...

im using mx-1 also nice happy.gif, difference is:

AS5 for hardcore ocers which wash HSF and reapply the paste every 3~6 mths
Mx-1 is for daily use and probably means u change it 1 time per year...

difference in performance is 1c only, but if u dun change AS5 every 3~6mths it will start to lose performance...this is from actual result cz my friend is using AS5 too =)

Usually I just use the standard pad that come with the CPU or graphics card, but if I ever remove it I use some cheap CoolerMaster thermal paste

Artic Silver 5 user here...

this is what i read about mx-1
"The compound hardens within a period of 200 hours and reaches thereafter its optimum performance" seems like it is the same as AS5 but better than AS5 by 1-2 degrees

so from you guys posts I concluded MX-1 is better for me since I don't like it when I need to reapply it every 3 months.

Will get mx-1 then...

direct contact.currently conroe setup no use any thermalpaste.

can you guarantee that your conroe's surface is 90%+++ in contact with the heatsink?

I actually did get a 10C drop going from cheapass to AS5. But of course i followed the application instructions extremely precisely. Super clean surfaces, and only a tiny little drop of paste. Use too much and performance goes to hell.

and you're the first one i come by claiming to have 10c drop in temps. that's nice!! thumbup.gif cos the reviews and feedbacks i get are usually around 2 - 5c drop.

i believe other factors like sink, fan, ambient and airflow also affect how far you get with as5. smile.gif i mean in a casing with bad airflow, stock heatsink and fan. one can't expect as5 to work wonders - a point many overlook. smile.gif

My AS5 tube which i bought as soon as it was available is still more than half full. I have used it many times, on my own stuff as well as my friends'. As i said above, less is more.

my AS5 tube is still far from empty, i just decided to not use it for now....... well usually for my primary rig but i'm not into following precision instructions just for thermal paste tongue.gif most of my machines are using the el-cheapo paste.

how does AS5 deteriorate in performance wor? tried google but still cant get it  rclxub.gif

AS5 dries up, from my experience. In fact dries up really badly if u use it for GPUs. That's y i never trust AS5 anymore after that.

I have not had trouble with my AS5 "drying up", curiously. One of my PCs has had it on for over 2 years now, no trouble with temperatures. Interestingly one of my friends had some trouble with it after about the same time (from the very same tube which i used), so i don't know what that was about. I suspect that if the heatsink moves after the paste has dried up, it may cause problems, but the drying itself is not a problem.

I was surprised myself. I thought it would be around 5C max. But it actually did drop 10C, and exactly 10C too vs the old crap paste.

I don't think toothpaste is very safe. It may be corrosive to the metals it comes in contact with, so it's not a good idea.
