Will Maxis offer its eSIM technology to the iPhone XS or any devices that support eSIM?

https://www.maxis.com.my/en/personal/plans/postpaid-plans/esim.html

What is eSIM?

eSIM stands for embedded SIM, an advanced new technology widely used in countries such as Japan, South Korea and the USA. This technology uses a small chip built into the device to replace the traditional SIM card, eliminating the need to carry around a physical card.

Benefits of eSIM

Convenience:
No physical setup needed. Independence from the phone.

Internet of Things:
Increased connectivity and convenience with the ability to connect more devices.

How to set up your eSIM on the Huawei Watch 2

Step 1
Download the Android Wear AND Huawei Wear apps to your smartphone

Step 2
Sync the Huawei Watch 2 to your phone and follow instructions on the Android Wear app

Step 3
Connect to the WiFi or your mobile data and scan the QR code on your Maxis eSIM card

Step 4
Follow the instructions on your screen to activate your eSIM profile

Step 5
Your Huawei Watch 2 is now paired with your eSIM and ready for use!

From the maxis eSIM FAQ page, seems like eSIM can have main standalone plan

What is the difference between an eSIM MISM and a standalone eSIM?

eSIM MISM:Primary: Can make receive calls and SMS

Secondary: Cannot receive calls and SMS

eSIM Standalone: These will have its own line and is able to make calls

What happen to Malaysia ? Now even India is ahead of us?

The boss confirmed e-Sim after iOS 12.1 launch. While Maxis still Kelam-Kqbut, different answers was given. No memo? no training? And Maxis suppose to be the most ‘adcance’ Telco in Malaysia.

How to catch up ? Our internet already slow. The So call Turbo only roll out with very few people got it.

So, the iPhones will have both an eSIM and a plastic SIM?

Yes. The new iPhones will have a traditional plastic SIM, the familiar hardware-based SIM chip that identifies you to your carrier network, and an eSIM, the newer software-based equivalent.

And here's the big thing: the eSIM can accommodate multiple phone numbers -- which you can add, delete and configure right from your iPhone's settings. In contrast, a plastic SIM needs to be physically removed and substituted.

In theory, once eSIM technology is widely supported by carriers in the US and internationally, Apple could phase out the plastic SIM entirely. For now, in giving the 2018 iPhones both a plastic SIM and eSIM, Apple is covering all of the bases.

Apple have been aggressively pushing telco carriers to convert to eSIM for the past few years already and with the debut of the new current iPhones supporting Dual-SIM with eSIM. it's just a matter of time. Same thing with Nano SIM form factor when iPhone 5 started using it, a lot of people were reluctant and confused regarding the change from their Micro and Mini SIM.

As more telco adapt and support the standard and more customers start using them, eSIM will be commonplace soon enough.

e-SIM is a new technology that can helps people in their daily life and also can solve the problems such as missing SIM card, damages of SIM card and others.

However, there is pros and cons in launching this technology widely.
The pros is that it is easily can be set up and registered just only by QR scan and follow the step given, then it can be use automatically.

the cons is that for Maxis e-SIM does not given adequate information to the staff and any other brunch that lead to the miscommunication as it is a new technology and a new launching product.

Maxis should advertise this technology as it is a new product being introduced in this country. By advertising, people can gain knowledge and automatically this product will growth rapidly as it is good product and beneficial towards society.

at the first stage, this eSIM technology only for iphone XS, but later it is can be used for any other devices such as android and so on.

hence, as the technology growing nowadays, it is must be spread among society and also all the detail information must be given. lastly, everybody can enjoy using it.

Sure. It’s actually very simple.

I noticed both of the forummers with no hotspot issue were both using 2 SIM cards (esim with a physical sim). And one forummer complained he wasn’t about to use the hotspot initially but it was alright after a few hours.

So what I did was I slot in my other number with a physical sim and voila! Mobile hotspot appeared. It stays even after I removed the physical sim.

And my hotspot works flawlessly after. No more blue circle

Durian Man eSIM
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4693673

Source: https://www.facebook.com/notes/mi-malaysia/how-to-use-your-xiaomi-device-without-a-sim-card/1048856325318461

The Era of SIM-less Finally Arrives!

Durian Man App is the first eSIM provider in Malaysia

eSIM provides the same customer experience in terms of network services such as voice call, SMS, mobile data and global roaming as a physical SIM, without using a SIM card

To activate the e-SIM, you have to go to one of the five authorised Mi Stores located at KLCC, Pavilion, Mid Valley, One Utama and IOI City Mall in Putrajaya.

For local data, Durian Man offers the following monthly options:
4GB data + 60 minutes of calls – RM14.15
8GB data + 500 minutes of calls – RM28
16GB data + 1,000 minutes of calls – RM45
128GB data – RM200

There’s also a RM1/day plan with 300MB of data and RM9/week option with 2GB of data.

If you want the esim now, you are not supposed to say that you want it for the iPhone.
Just say you want it for the Huawei Watch

Hi All,
Just want to share with you'll that I have successfully ported over two of my companies corporate numbers into esim service for use on iPhone XR. Note that my corporate lines are of course, postpaid and required an authorisation letter.

Basically, as you know, Maxis staff will inform you that it's not allowed. You can request as if you are requesting for use on Huawei Watch. Once you got it, on the iPhone, go to Settings / Mobile Data / Add Data Plan.

You will then be asked to scan the QR Code. It's here, that the QR will link back to Maxis and activate your esim account. If you were to attempt to scan the QR apart from this setting page, it will fail...

Make sure that you have a Wifi Internet connection as the QR code requires to connect to Maxis for confirmation.

I got both of my esim's from IPC.

Good Luck to you all.

Both of my esims work fine for Calls, Texts and Data outright. No setting was required.

However, just becareful of the Primary and Secondary - the way Apple explains its usage is very confusing.
Note that esim is noted as "Secondary" and that there are a few options to choose : which line (Primary or Secondary) for calls, texts and data

In this regard, Android's method of switching and selecting on Calls and Data between sim cards is simple and straight forward...

Regards.

1. How did you get the esim? Any postpaid with Maxis can get?
2. Is it stable same as physical card? Do you experience battery drain? If go oversea, any problem?

Thanks for kind response

I got an e-sim multi line (share my same number) by telling Maxis I had the Huawei watch. Eventually I Used it on my new iPad Pro 11 2018 - only for data sharing with my main line.
At least when I travel I can use the sim slot for a foreign prepaid.

Got the esim at Maxis KLCC. Once you scan the QR code, the iPad autoconfigured - if that is what you’re asking.

Hi bro, currently my situation is I am celcom user. If I gonna tell them I am going to use it for Huawei Watch 2, what will be the minimum plan? because i see some replies here saying that add the data plan later after we use the esim.. a bit confusing.

Went to Maxis Pavillion to change prinsipal to e-sim.
Use excuse for Huawei Watch 2.
And currently is stable and usable for my iPhone XS Max 256GB.

Only i want to make multi-sim; same principal/line/number but different sim card for my tab.

But they say, since i use e-sim, cannot make multiple sim.

I just said okay but i don't buy it.

yes, bos.
That's the disadvantage.

plus, need wifi/internet to activate the e-sim to another phone.

my advise to all, simpan/print/upload the QR code picture to your wallet/cloud storage.

It'll save you the troublesome.

Esim worked fine for me in Singapore & India.
I had activated data and voice roaming when there.
Had no connectivity issues.
Safe to say it works the same mostly everywhere just like a normal sim.

Btw I went to Garden today and asked for eSim, they told me "no stock" bangwall.gif bangwall.gif

I asked again, "No stock?", it doesn't required physical Nano Sim Card.

I have some questions that I am hoping some of the sifus here can answer for eSim:-

1. If I install eSim on my iPhone and insert an overseas sim card into the physical slot, do I have to select the primary and secondary profile?
2. If yes, are there limitations (e.g. primary can receive text and calls and secondary can't?)
3. What happens to the data usage? Where would the data usage be drawn from, the eSim or overseas sim?

In iPhone you can select which line to be used for voice call and which line can be use for data.

SIM1 can be voice and SIM2 as data or any combination also can. You can also totally turn off either SIM to use only 1 line at a time.

Successfully change to esim @ maxis centre vivacity Kuching, but I upgraded from hotlink prepaid to maxis postpaid so no rm10 charges. eSIM only available for maxis postpaid and hotlink flex postpaid users BUT NOT FOR PREPAID.

Successfully change to esim @ maxis centre vivacity Kuching, but I upgraded from hotlink prepaid to maxis postpaid so no rm10 charges. eSIM only available for maxis postpaid and hotlink flex postpaid users BUT NOT FOR PREPAID.

Same qr code package as Huawei Watch?

apple watch celular selling in malaysia? can use SG or US set?

If it is not stipulated by Apple & Maxis, likely it won't work/ default disable by Apple.

https://www.apple.com/watch/cellular/

But let's wait for someone who willing to try it out before buying one, unless you are okay to buy a cellular version but use the bluetooth only.

EDIT:

Apparently someone already did and fail ..

this question can be answered if someone use Maxis e-sim and XOX e-sim at the same time; because i use Maxis e-sim and still can see "Add Data Plan" on the Mobile Data setting.

Dual whatsapp not supported in iPhone for the time being. Nothing to do with SIM card. Software restricted.

Anyone had any luck with getting an eSIM along with a working multiSIM?

Also has anyone been able to delay the activation of eSIM for longer than 24 hours upon receiving the activation package?

Thanks for the response. multiSIM is a discontinued service that's different from dual-sim. It's basically a cloned SIM card service from Maxis that allows the devices running these SIM cards to share the data plan, make calls from the same number, but we have to designate one of the multiSIMs as the master to receive calls.

From my understanding. you can have multiple esim profile in your phone. however you can only activate one at a time. because the phone can only support dual carrier. one for esim and one for physical one.

can somebody share how to know which line the caller are calling?

example: you in Vietnam , you have maxis on roaming and you have a local SIM card. Somebody call you on Maxis, will you able to tell from the screen that somebody is call maxis number.

As Maxis charges is per day. Any sms out or receiving call will be count as 1 day charges and I want to avoid this.

Yes. When a call is received you can see the label next to the caller id. The default label is P and S (Primary line or secondary line). This can be customized based on your preference.

I think is not discontinued right? You can still get it but need to pay.
And the eSIM is just a sim type like nano or micro, it should be no restriction.

You just select the profile and activate it. Dont need to setup. you only do it once then the profile will be stored on your phone. so switching is just tap tap tap.

Just scan the QR code will do.
actually esim is just like those day you need to enter CD to play game vs now you can download from steam. like dat, just that the maxis side need to change their protocol to create QR code like link your phone to their server to receive the information for the sim, instead from simcard.

Correct me if I’m wrong, I think the device also need to have/support esim in order to use esim, for ipads only the latest ipad pro got esim, so I think if you have these ipads you can use esim no prob, just get the kit from maxis or other telco esim, scan the code and voila

Maxis Centre, Plaza Merdeka, Kuching

I went to Pavillion and also at KLCC; they keep on offering share-line in which have to choose new number for the other sim; which is totally defeat the purpose of my intention to get a multi-sim for same number.
I think because they want to get sales from new number. RM48/month compare to RM15/month for multi sim.

For multiSIM, you have to designate one of the SIMs as the primary so calls will be forwarded there. The designation is pretty much on-the-fly with just a few key presses.

Exactly.

Now, here's a news.

Just now i went again to the store to make a third sim for my multi-sim.

The customer officer told me that only primary sim; in which i set it to be on my eSIM; only entitled for unlimited call.

If i activate the other two sims when i want to change the phone to make calls; it will be charge 30 sen/min.

Well, just wait and see for the bill to come to know whether its the truth or not.

Reporting back here for the benefit of everyone. I have just replaced the physical SIM card this morning with eSIM and kept all my other 3 existing multiSIMs. The Maxis representative who helped me with my request said I'm allowed the maximum of 5 multiSIMs, unchanged from what was previously known. Upon activation of eSIM, only the primary multiSIM on my phone got deactivated. The Maxis center I went to was Menara Maxis in KLCC. Hope this helps.

i just changed to esim. just sharing my experience here.

So, I walk in the a maxis center two week ago, it took like 10mins.,then i walk out with the esim on my iphone xs max.

Few days after i changed i realize the hotspot is not working on esim. Then i come across this tread. putting back in the physical sim doesn't work for me (i dont know if i am doing it correctly, but the physical sim just not showing any reception anymore)

i called 100 twice, one guy ask me to wait but the call got put off, another one ask me to reset network setting which doesn't work.

So i went back to maxis center in Gardens. A guy spent like 15 mins god knows what he pressed on my phone and made it works. i tried ask him, he wasn't willing to share, just say you use vpn before and it will get block for hotspot, but i never did.
(note: he never put physical sim card in or whatever, just pressing my phone)

i travel a lot in asean, so i change sim frequently. right after my first trip, i realize my hotspot not working again after i remove the physical sim.

so i try google again. with the keyword vpn but got nothing. I remember the guy didn't actually do anything material, he was trial and erroring, like on off the mobile data, tweaking the setting here and there. so i decide to try my luck.

then....

i made it works, when i turn ON the roaming, the hotspot works like magic. and you can turn roaming back off. no need physical sim.

not sure if this is helpful for any other user. My takeaway of this story is, the telco cant help us when we have these kind of problem. Even in apple forum people have same problems, and the suggest solution is put in physical sim... there are too many phones too many customer out there.

Heard that changing device will require us to visit Maxis Centre to get a new QR Code for esim?

Anybody can verify?

Cannot use back old QR Code?

As am planning to switch to new iPhone 11 Pro from XS Max.

Thanks.

i have same question too!

I rang maxis CS, they told me one QR code is for one device only. You can reuse the QR code but must be same device.

Well.. sometime i don't 100% believe what CS said. Any other users can give us advise maybe?

I've read somewhere that you could try removing the data plan, then wait anything from 5 mins to 24 hours and re-add again.

This is for overseas telcos.

However, I really don't have the luxury to not have cellular access for 24 hours.......

That’s a shame. Sounds funny having to get a new QR code for every device change

If you use your phone to scan the old QR code, it will say that the code is no longer valid.

You need to go to a Maxis Centre and get a new QR code.

Even some Maxis staff seem to be unaware of this. They will insist that you scan the original QR code. I told them that I already did that many times and still failed.

A question on eSIM. We all know iPhone has Quick Start, to automatically set up the new iPhone. Just bring the 2 iPhones close together, and setup is done on the fly.

When i upgrade frm iPhone 11 Pro Max to 13 Pro Max, will the eSIM be ‘transferred’ over to the 13 Pro Max?

Yes, select the cellular plan (eSIM) to transfer over during this process.

Hmmm.. maxis doesn’t support esim transfer. See maxis esim FAQ

For eSIM, any change in device will require a new QR code (SIM replacement treatment). In this case, you may use the dedicated nano-SIM slot available in your mobile device.

You have to request new QR to transfer new device

Nope. As usual maxis is very stingy, for postpaid only.
CODE

Who is eligible to activate eSIM?

Maxis eSIM is available for all Maxis mobile postpaid customers including Hotlink Postpaid Flex and Corporate plans. It is available for new line registrations and existing customers.

Damn! I was thinking to get maxis/hotlink telco as data only to use on my iphone xs max’s secondary eSim. Primary is using physical nano sim Celcom.
Celcom + Maxis is the best combination IMHO, should the area i go into don’t have much Celcom coverage.

Other prepaid eSims that i discovered are:

Yoodo
Redone
XOX
Digi

Yoodo, Redone & XOX rides on Celcom MVNO yes? So no point on getting them as i already have celcom as primary.
While Digi, i don’t really trust much on its coverage as it could be bad though.

Checked the Hotlink Postpaid Flex package offer:

RM60 for 40GB data - will revert back to 30GB after 1 year
RM40 for 20GB - revert to 12GB after 1 year

Kinda pricy. doh.gif

Even if u chosed digi as backup esim, they're already merging with celcom so in a year or two they'll also be sharing same tower network. Currently your only choice for cheap esim is digi prepaid, but soon your only choice will be maxis after celcomdigi merger completed.

1 year? I think for Celcom to be able to use Digi network and Digi network to be able to use Celcom network, would take up to 5 years.

By that time, Maxis prepaid should have eSIM or else they'll lose more subscribers. Future iPhone probably will move to eSIM only.

Yes hopefully that is the case.

By the way, i just discovered yet another MVNO telco that rides on MAXIS network. It’s a prepaid but the package is quite interesting:

RM170 per year - 60GB
5gb/month

RM420 per year - 180GB
15gb/month

Ansar Mobile, which was operating on RedTONE company

But the downside is, they only offer physical nano sim.

So perhaps i should convert my primary celcom to esim, and Ansar mobile secondary on physical nano sim. hmm.gif

What do you guys think?

Instead of doing that why not just just use hotlink physical sim with celcom esim? Or just use digi prepaid esim, the merger complete and tower sharing would still be long away from now. I would never use the unknown mvno. Legit haven't even heard of that name before and legit i thought maxis doesn't have any mvno. An unknown company with literally zero advertising is a nope lol.

The issue with Maxis and Celcom is that only postpaid has eSIM.

We want eSIM from Maxis for prepaid. That's the issue.

For Celcom, there's workaround.. MVNO, and you're right I rather not use unknown company. But again, for Celcom there are good MVNO's.. Yoodo the best, and .. not so good but still good alternative is TuneTalk.

Never heard of them.. maybe can check with Maxis whether legit or not, but even if they are.. and if they don't offer eSIM.. I might as well just use Hotlink.

Yoodoo is going off soon isn't? or it will continue to stay?

Also, i am quite new in esim tech.
I understood that we can only use either one of the cellular data per 1 sim (physical or esim). cannot run BOTH at the same time?

so considering this scenario:

let say i have exhausted my primary celcom data, and i would like to switch to secondary maxis postpaid esim to use the data, how should i do it? Do i need to manually select the cellular option to choose on Secondary in settings?
or iphone esim can have some sort of smart cellular data management auto switchover function?
Say it will auto switch to maxis data if i can't get reception on my celcom?

also, using dual nano + esim will definitely drains the iphone faster because connecting to two networks will be more taxing than one yes?

Celcom has been given 18 months to either close or sell Yoodo. Merge was in 12/22.. so there's still 16 months. Hopefully will get sold so don't need to close. However, there might be new T&C.

I'm not iPhone user. I'm Android user.

Should be the same for iPhone and Android.. cannot run data on both SIM. You pick default SIM for data. You have to switch your data SIM manually, in settings.

Dual SIM should not drain the battery. The battery used for the network standby on backup SIM shouldn't be too much. You can experiment with it.

If you look for how to save battery tips on the Internet.. there's no mention of having dual SIM consumes battery.
