Clevo N850 which has mediocre cooling and OKish build quality

Get another option

ZM Fong,
Illegear onyx lite ok or not for 4-5 year use,
Any big performance gain between i5 and i7?
*
No one can tell whether the performance can last 4-5 years but in general, no

8300H and 8750H have performance difference especially in multi core load, but not much in games

budget around rm2000-2500. usage mix of gaming with light video editing. must have ssd, I can swap my 500gb ssd. ram min 8gb I can upgrade it later by myself later. dont care about weight & battery life. i seldom move around lol.gif

Thinkpad E is basically consumer rebrand

Most Ryzen laptops have inconsistent/poor CPU performance and battery life due to bad drivers/firmware/BIOS

Can refer to my regular laptop list for more options

displayport is a rare connector on laptops. most projectors I've encounted either used VGA or HDMI, not displayport.

But if you mean display port in like a port to display out to, then yes. '

Ya ya..i mean like vga or hdmi..ooo..

Ideapad 330 (15 Intel) vs Thinkpad E585(Amd) which is better?  hmm.gif
coz I manage to config the Thinkpad to match as close to Ideapad specs. and I notice is cheaper for thinkpad. heck you can get more ram when you match it price. lol

Thinkpad E585

i can't seem to find latitude configurations and dell online store no price.

i never use Thinkpad before, E490 really that poor?  confused.gif

with around my budget, i can set thinkpad to these build:
1) E490->  i7-8565U , Ram 8gb, gpu: AMD RX550 X
2) T480->  i5-8250U , Ram 8gb, gpu: Nvidia MX150

spec wise, E490 seems to achieve higher spec than T480 with around same price.
but is the i7 really give much performance? confused.gif

T series , E series is basically consumer level like ZM Fong pointed out. So my recommendation is to go for T-series, you could easily upgrade and it's pretty durable laptop
Personally i would pick T series , if you need recommendation try reddit thinkpad subforum

Lenovo were the first ones to allow Ryzen . So far I checked out some youtube vidoes , gives you some decent performance for the price.

If you want best reliability better go for premium business laptops like Thinkpad T and Latitude 7000

Preferred min battery life and max weight?
*
Min battery life - Not too sure on this as I havent had much experience dealing with laptop battery life. is 2-3 hours while running programs on a high or low battery life end.

Max Weight - Around 1.5kg max preferably.

thinkpad seems like a good shout.

Any thoughts on asus zenbook 14 vs thinkpad T?

E490 has severe GPU cooling issue and cut down battery (compared to E480)

i5 and i7 ULV CPU don't have much performance difference in most cases

E series and T series have difference in quality too (E series is basically consumer rebrand in short)

just wondering, E series is consumer level, is it still much better build than ideapad series or same same only? confused.gif

want to know is how severe the cooling in E490? confused.gif
is it always that hot when only multi tab web browsing and using visual studio
or hot when constantly playing game?

if i5 and i7 no much difference, with around the same spec setup for E490 and T480,
the price difference is around RM500+-
this RM500 worth the better cooling and battery in T480?

A bit better imo

E480 has severe cooling until dGPU performance only can match Intel iGPU (firmware limited) while E490 has better performance but still runs very hot (60+C surface temp under GPU load)

T series has better QC+QA as well, don't forget that

hmm... tat means for laptop, no matter GPU MX 150 or RX550X, when it gets HOT, the performance about the same as UHD620 ?

if Thinkpad T480 which is better? with or without MX 150?

E480 has the dGPU throttled due to firmware (insufficient cooling), most laptops will be fine

Do you need dGPU for your workload?

Yes , it is better built - at least you get the iconic thinkpad keyboard

It does get warm when you do certain tasks , but mostly if it is going to be on a desk , it is fine. The T480 is on its own class , its premium and you can easily upgrade it (lets say two months down the road , you want to add a 4G card , it can be done , or upgrade the ram , it can be done...replace the screen with 4K screen...it can be done

MX150/RX550X is way better vs UHD 620 if you are talking about gaming. Now it boils down to do you need a dedicated GPU or not....if no , save the money - get the built in GPU , if you think you need because you play some games from time to time , i say get the dGPU

just in case anyone want to go... hopefully can find good deal...
my suggestions... want to know if its cheap?
-compare price before the expo.... like other places or online price...
-do check if there is bundle with warranty extension? (sometimes there are, sometimes it depends)
-any freebies(some are useless, try if can exchange) see if your purchase worth or not
-software bundle may some are useful, but do not get cheated... some are just trial. 30 days mostly... such as anti virus / Microsoft programs..

so only E480 problematic, E490 or T480 is still fine right?

I guess I will still play games occasionally and some other application, so dGPU is needed.

interesting, i never know T480 can be easily upgrade?
especially, the 4k screen.
the upgrades can be done by who? me or lenovo shop or send back to lenovo factory? confused.gif
wont the warranty void?

Actually E480 is also okay (if you go reddit for thinkpad - got people who buy them - they are okay just htat you don't get the full thinkpad build quality la) . E480 can be upgraded

T480 can be easily upgradable and it's the last thinkpad (T490) that you can upgrade/change the battery , screen , even the keyboard. The beauty part of is the warranty wouldnt be voided. Thinkpad is the only laptop that dont put a seal to say warranty void at the back cover

You buy the parts and pasang sendiri (got manual) , upgrade ones they can do but it costs a bomb.

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/ <-- join the community and look how durable Thinkpad are ....

Afraid I can't increase my budget, I understand getting the screen that I specified is very hard at this price range? If so, maybe you can recommend at least an IPS and acceptable brightness? Thanks!

Maybe around 280 nits (limited knowledge here)? I would mostly spend time working indoors. But if I have to use it outdoors (not direct sunlight, maybe outside mamak), I hope at least I can still work with the laptop.
