Are you sure modify IMEI need to open case?
I always thought can soft-mod since seller page mentioned that firmware upgrade will break the mod.

can also but not all models can, some require open case.
Personally firmware upgraded so does everyone else and no issues, it's doable but still possible to brick it if u upgraded the wrong version then it will brick the router(ameuter move)
