Apple TV 4K 2017 vs Apple TV 4K 2021

Somehow 2017 Apple TV 4K has better GPU that 2021 Apple TV 4K.

Also Apple TV 4K remote don't have Gyroscope.

Apple TV 4K 2017 is better than Apple TV 4K 2021.

I think because harder to jailbreak unlike android box. Also for pirated movie, people just dont pay money for it, they download/stream it directly from the box for free.

Ppl would prefer those android box where they can get access to much more content compared to Apple TV. Furthermore, you have to pay for each movie. I have the 2nd gen Apple TV and only use it to mirror or surf youtube for my kid

Use to stream Netflix on it but no longer do it

Yea this I agree. As long as you are ok with paying all the movies, Apple TV is the best.

If not then ppl will opt for android box. Also Apple device users are not many in Malaysia compared to Windows and Android.

I'm thinking of buying Apple TV 4K too due to this but can it play my own 4K movies / series / home videos from my NAS? Can it passthrough Atmos/ DTS-X surround sound from those movies? How about english subtitle?

Apple TV IMO is great. Slightly better user experience than those cheap android box. Been using it for couple of years for streaming local content via Plex, and watching Netflix and Youtube. The only gripe that I could think of is the lack of native TVOS apps that caters for us malaysian, FTA app like RTM and from Media Prima and paid services like iflix, Astro Go, etc. Although it's not Apple's fault. And yes we can airplay some of this services via iOS or a Mac. But the lack of native TVOS support from local TV providers, makes the box feel a lil bit incomplete.

Light computing in terms of media streaming and gaming from appstore, yes. But for productivity, not possible. TVOS is different from iOS. Only media streaming apps and games are avaialable in TVOS appstore. You're better off with an ipad for productivity in apple ecosystem.

Besides Netflix and movies from iTunes, you can also stream 4K movies from your NAS. I use Infuse which supports 4K and HDR (no support for Dolby Vision yet).

Only "problem" with Apple TV 4K is the lack of support for Youtube 4K HDR. If I'm not mistaken, it plays Youtube in 1080p only which is a shame.

I have using ATV 4k since March 18 and enjoy every second on it. Using smartdnsproxy to access Netflix, Hulu, HBO, STARZ etc using directv premier share account. However, anyone know how to access itunes store from other account without changing the account. I am sign in with my US itunes to enable siri and TV apps but cannot access the movie that i have purchased using Itunes Malaysia account. Tried Itunes family sharing but seems not accessible by US itunes account. So normally what i did is changing my account from US to Malaysia everytime I want to access the purchased content from Malaysia account. Not a major issue though but perhaps even better if I can use 1 account but can access purchased item from other account.

Because Apple TV RM12.90 is owned by you and it is 4K with Dolby Vision.

Apple TV Netflix processing is very good.

I think one thing bad about watching YouTube on Apple TV u will see advertisement and it is quite often. If you directly cast YouTube video to your smart tv using YouTube app or your tv app. Totally no advertisement at all. And Apple TV does not allow adding to queue for YouTube. Meaning one time can only cast one video. Also while you are casting YouTube to your Apple TV, if you are using your phone at the same time, the sound of your games, your apps etc. will be sent to your tv and mix with YouTube video playback for the sound.

It is good if you want to mirror your content to tv from your Apple devices. however, if you purely want to cast YouTube videos to your tv, just cast using the YouTube app ok your phone or your tv app will do.

i have no prob with advertisement. in fact, most youtubers care more about the likes, subscribers and notifications (bell icons).

prob is not about the advertisement, it is about the user experience. you can try it too.

1) cast video from youtube app on iphone to apple tv.
2) 2 to 3 mins later advertisement appear
3) after advertisement finished, home screen of apple tv show
4) that's it, never resume to the youtube where it stops, need to go to youtube app again, click play button.
5) after play button is clicked, it starts the video from begining.

constantly this happens regularly. mad.gif

importantly, the ads are just too ridiculuously frequent that every 2-3 mins one advertisement. the user experience is totally bad.

using youtube app on iphone, cast videos to tv, can even queue them and remove them from youtube app playlist anytime.
in between zero app shown. smile.gif and playback is mooth and hassle free.

this is the reason why i do not like to use apple tv to cast youtube video given the issues and limitation.

as a end-user, we care more about user experience than other things.

netflix has limited content, tried before and not using it anymore. it is not only about price but also content matters.

QUOTE(westlife @ Nov 4 2018, 11:04 AM)
i have no prob with advertisement. in fact, most youtubers care more about the likes, subscribers and notifications (bell icons).

prob is not about the advertisement, it is about the user experience. you can try it too.

I don't do casting.

I know this is half year ago question, I just notice this thread today, haha!

Movies Anywhere only can link account create in USA. In addition it is useless as it only playback as 1080p even your movies is 4K HDR.

Just switch your iTunes account if you have multiple country iTunes account, it is instant switch and only keying password once during setup.

So this is What is New in Apple tvOS 12.3, any different?
A better looking Apple TV icon, that it, inside is very similar as previous design.
Another changes is this new Apple TV app is finally support Malaysia iTunes account.

By the mean time, I totally No Regret buying Apple TV 4K, it is the only TV Box can playback Dolby Atmos for Netflix.
Beside this it is the cheapest way to get legal streaming movies up to 4K HDR.

Also, the processor is freaking powerful and no issue playback own collection up to actual 4K UHD Blu-ray without compression quality film.
Infuse doing it freaking awesome here.

I agree on that, that TV app is very useless for us and I never use.

It may a little useful for US and UK people as they can subscribe others TV channel there and can watch nearly everything in one app place instead of go for separation apps. But still it is not useful for me, I rather go different apps to watch. Also due to limitation like Netflix won't fully support, third party not streaming service apps not support, this Apple TV app became unable cover everything in one app, it is very useless in my opinion.

Yeah, it's weird, before it was OK. Now I find that if the TV is turned on by the AppleTV, the AppleTV will not be able to turn it off. If the TV is turned on by the TV's remote then the AppleTV will be able to turn it off.

Anyways, it's a really old Toshiba HD TV from 2009 which refuses to die. One white pixel is all it has to show for, for all those years in service. I guess I should be happy for that but that's why I have the ATV4K but no 4KTV.

Plex is not that good compare with Infuse. Plex is still in my Apple TV 4K box just somewhere below as I not using it. I keep it for hope one day it can do same as Infuse, maybe needs sometimes, already a year, not much improvement on Plex when enabling subtitle. I hope Plex can solve this issue as Plex had easier to find movies as they is a listing on side follow a b c. This is something missing from Infuse.

Plex cannot playback smoothly once enable .SRT subtitle. Beside this it also cannot enable .PGS or .VOBSUB subtitle as it will transcode the movie. Once transcode it is not original quality, the worst not support HDR. I already subscribe to Plex for testing the new player, but result is same. It won't transcode as long you not using .PGS subtitle. This is still not solved in latest version 2.2

Infuse no such issue and freaking smooth, that the reason I only use Infuse but connect to Plex Media Server for easier organize my movies. biggrin.gif
The problem of Infuse is they don't have media server, thus I need supplement of Plex Media Server.

As for TV icon, I just put there during screen capture, haha! Just for illustration purpose. tongue.gif

My Plex is still there but not using until they solved the subtitle issue.

I guess we have different requirements... I am opposite of you infuse pro is just sitting there and not used. I don’t need subs as mostly watch English tv. For mobility especially catching up on series when travelling abroad plex is great. Sadly I don’t use infuse enough. As for srt subs. No complaints so far from users.

Srt no issue, just sometimes you will notice frame skip on remux copy of 4K HDR movie. No this issue on infuse.

But plenty movies came with pgs instead of srt especially those remux copy. I know can easier find subtitle replacement but I want instant find at apps not separate find at PC. Plex do support find subtitle instant but I think it disable it if already got subtitle inside as sometimes I don't find that option. Infuse always can find

I use to subtitle normatter what language movie I watch. I need English subtile even for English film. Chinese subtitle for Chinese film. Foreign movie that I don't understand I need English subtitle. Subtitle is too important for me. smile.gif

Apple tvOS only I use Infuse and it is same mobility as Plex because I use Plex plugin inside Infuse.

Plex had better interface but weaker on smoothness performance and bad subtitle support.

I already infuse pro life time user because it give me the best. Plex Pass I only subscribe to test if they mentioned something new related to playback and subtitle support. At least it is support SRT now not like previous but it is not enough as at least need support PGS as well because this both is common.

It's good if you decided to use stereo HiFi with Projector. You can just connect project to Hdmi from Apple TV and do airplay to your stereo. No more long hdmi needed.

Is there any APP I can download/install from Apple TV App Store to watch Chinese drama from China/Taiwan/Hong Kong ?
So far I found Gt TV Taiwan APP but it required account registration with Taiwan SIM card number only, So this App for Taiwan country only, people in other country cannot register account.
Because unless I go to Taiwan to buy a SIM card for my smartphone than only I will have a Taiwan phone number to register an account in Gt TV website.

Other APP I found on Apple TV that play Chinese TV are from Christian Organisation that is not what I want to watch.

Or is there a way to install APPs from iPhone App Store into Apple TV?
Because there are a lots of APPs from iPhone App Store can play Chinese drama from China/Taiwan/Hong Kong.

32Gb is enough. If only have itunes Malaysia is worth since you can buy 4K movie with Dolby Vision. I hope your tv support Dolby vision.

I think HBO only can subscribe through Astro.

Everything buy from iTunes did not store locally, you are streaming back and need internet everytime you watch it.

32GB is enough unless you plan to install plenty of games.

New APTV4k 32gb user here. Love the Netflix with Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos playing both together on my LG oled B6. However found out that infuse can play my 4K remux atmos hdr movies over local NAS, but where is the atmos? Looks like this is the biggest drawback to become the best tv box.

On the other hand I had 2017 nvidia shield too, local USB and Local NAS playback was perfect supporting all 4K hdr Dolby Atmos. But this box Netflix streaming sucks. No Dolby vision no Dolby Atmos.

On the other hand, the above 2 don't have any 4K disc player, to make a complete home theater sources, Xbox 1 S/X is required.

Conclusion, there is no 1 complete box that consolidates all 3 above to become the ultimate 4K HDR Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos movie source yet. Sad that we need to have 3 devices at this point of time.

But the convenience of streaming outweigh the 4K disc. All my Blu-ray disc is wasted. Unless you are videophile or have band internet connection

Agree blueray disc can give that edges for videophile and audiophile. But its going to be a waste aftee a few years and you need a storage space to keep them. Guess that I will not opt into phisical disc and good with APTV4k and Nvidia Shield.

Yalo.

They is no perfect box.

But lucky the Infuse still support up to 7.1 output as LPCM just can't have the Atmos, they do is different there as I got few Dolby Atmos 4K UHD Blu-ray and I have the Remux version as well, it is not like heaven and hell different but they is different there.

Hoping support on local playback of TrueHD Atmos is not possible unless Apple support it. For local playback of Dolby Digital Plus Atmos do support in MrMC apps. Currently Infuse not support yet.

Checked that infuse app only plays TrueHD 7.1 when feed with local movie file with atmos.

No player is able to passthru Dolby Atmos in TrueHD due to Apple didn't put the support and Dolby Atmos the metadata cannot when thru as LPCM.

Apple TV 4K only support Dolby Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus for the moment and only change if Apple change it.

You only can listen up to Dolby TrueHD via LPCM.

Hi, is anyone experiencing issues with Netflix app recently? I'm on the 2-stream subscription through a 30 Mbps Maxis FiberHome connection (Speed tests shows normal performance ~30 Mbps up and down). I'm on the latest 12.4.1 tvOS for the aTV 4K.

AFAIK, the 2-stream package does not include 4K video streaming, so 2 simultaneous streams should work fine.

Lately Netflix has been buffering for ~0.5-1 minute when starting any video, sometimes it gets stuck indefinitely. Playback after that point is smooth though. This didn't use to happen 2-3 months back, when playback was almost instantaneous.

There's also the problem with starting a video that is passcode protected (16+, after entering the passcode, it no longer autoplays the video. Pressing play does not respond either), but I figured that it is some bug with the program rather than an issue with buffering or starting videos.

Thanks for taking the time to test.

Not sure why it is happening myself, though there is a thread on MacRumors with a similar complaint.

I'm wondering if there is some DNS geo-location issues, or else IPv6 related routing issues (Maxis enables IPv6 nowadays, but I don't really know if Netflix uses it). Sometimes it gets better if I switch to one of the public DNS services (1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8), other times it is worse. Or it could be Maxis Fiber..... hmm.gif

Either reset or the wifi router is just not able to cope. Or there's some interference with wifi signal. You can switch to 5Ghz band.

I've updated my aTV 4K to 13.0 and Netflix seems to be a bit better, though I still encounter buffering on start occasionally.
Strangely, sometimes it'll start video playback immediately which is much faster than previously where there is usually a few seconds delay. The problem with passcode protected videos not responding after entering the passcode seems to have been solved as well.

There is no consistently better performance, but I think the 13.0 upgrade is an improvement.

Hello!

Got a questions to Apple TV owners WITH a smart/android TV.

What else do you use the Apple TV for? Exclusively for AirPlay from phone/tablet/laptop?

Any other benefits apart from that? Considering to get one, but don't quite see the point since the only streaming channel I use is Netflix and it's already available natively on my TV.

Thanks!

I used it for Netflix & Youtube even though my TV already has the latter 2. Malas to switch input source. Airplay not so much. My main reason for getting the ATV4K was to use it as a Homekit hub.

Noticed that I talk in the past tense as I'm now using a HomePod. Sold the ATV4K just before the AppleTV+ keynote. I thought Apple was going to release a new version. Anyway with AppleTV+ and Arcade, I'll be getting another unit soon.

HomePod. How is that working for you?

If it's gonna be for the Arcade and youtube/netflix, I don't think there's a real reason for me to get the ATV to be frank. Not likely to do set up any homekit anytime soon as well.

This leaves me with just Airplay huh.

Ah well. Thanks for the response kind stranger! I guess I'll hold off from getting one. Unless I get a really good price on one laugh.gif

I find that you really need an Apple Music subscription to make full use of the HomePod. I’m on the free trial now and it’s great. My main use for it is HomeKit. I don’t really use AirPlay much.

After getting my first apple tv about 5 years ago, I do not use any other stuff to watch TV. Not even any of the smart TV functions. Only subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime. Once you get your unit, just download whatever apps that is available for news and entertainment. And search through it. Many are free content even stuff from CNN, Al-Jazeera etc. Dont forget the China apps like CCTV. It should be enough unless you have so much time to watch TV. Then may have to subscribe to one of the channels.

Mostly Aqara: Switches, tunable white bulbs, smoke detector; temp, water, motion, vibration & door sensors.
Mi: Bedside Lamp
Koogeek: Bulbs, Light strips
I think that's about it.

The HomePod is mainly used to control the switches and bulbs. You can also ask about humidity, temperature, door open/closed but that's not really useful.

hi all, i just purchased a apple tv 4k and glad that im successful to view the US itunes content with giftcards.
Speedy almost closed down every of their retail, and we r getting more difficult to have physical 4k disk (sadly my oppo 4k player become cacat now), so i decided to go for Apple 4k. But the local limited content simply make no point, neither the movie without dolby vision/atmos, nor some movies dont even release in Malaysia itunes store.

However i figured out that as long as we purchased the content with giftcard, there is not required VPN to stream the movie.
Any sifu familiar in this, mind to share is that common to stream US content in Malaysia?

Anyone has problem with playing contents on appletv (Apple Tv app) with unifi?
Other streaming service like netflix and amazon prime working fine.
But can’t play movies from iTunes and series from AppleTV+ (Comes out message : there’s a problem loading this content).

There’s at least three of us with the same problem, including you. Head over to the Apple TV+ thread if you haven’t already.

The general consensus seems to be an issue of when it’s being played. Day time seems to be fine, with issues from evening to night.

Hi all, a couple of quick questions:
1. Does Astro Go work with the Apple TV 4K?
2. Can it connect to a 1080p TV? I don’t mind it not displaying in 4K for now as I’m not planning on switching my TV just yet.

hey man. No need VPN for US iTunes. You can buy US iTunes gift card at lazada. US Itunes update their sales every Tuesday & Friday (around 1pm MY time).
Or even cheaper, you can find digital code from US Bluray / 4k. I do this myself and I have around 300 4k movies in my US iTunes

Malaysia iTunes censor sometimes. Most new movies will have belum ditapis but that means they can change the rating then update the film with cuts. Check the run times you will see it will be less. Or they will do a super zoom instead of harsh cut during objectionable scenes (rented Gone girl because it was cheap n wanted to watch). Rather wait for the US $4.99 sales to buy. Even Sense & Sensibility which is like nothing tawdry IMO the run time is less compared MY vs US.

The only movie I was satisfied to buy in MY store is the LOTR extended trilogy for RM99. In MY store only have 12 titles bought and US iTunes I have close to a thousand movie & TV shows at this point. Rather not pay for less content since RM12.90 vs US$4.99 really isn't all that much.

Every day at 1 or 2 pm (according to daylight savings time in US) there is a few deals for $4.99 but the big sales are on Friday 1-2pm or at the weekly refresh on Tuesdays. Check out cheapcharts website to track titles u want and when price drop it will notify you.

Yeah sometimes. But some movies in MY iTunes are only HD. But in US iTunes they're 4k dolby vision dolby atmos...
US bluray comes with digital codes (people selling codes around $5 - $10) redeemable on US iTunes. So new releases like Joker, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Gemini Man all 4k codes can be purchased around $7 each. And how much do they cost in MY iTunes?

RM54.90.

One thing bad about iTunes movies is that they don't always come with English subtitles. Does every movies in US iTunes come in English subtitles?

Malaysia iTunes censor sometimes. Most new movies will have belum ditapis but that means they can change the rating then update the film with cuts. Check the run times you will see it will be less. Or they will do a super zoom instead of harsh cut during objectionable scenes (rented Gone girl because it was cheap n wanted to watch). Rather wait for the US $4.99 sales to buy. Even Sense & Sensibility which is like nothing tawdry IMO the run time is less compared MY vs US.

What? They did exact the same kind of censorship in cinemas to itunes streaming videos shocking.gif ?

I already setup long time ago with iPad. But I believe you just use some phone number that you Google . Not sure if you can still use some tax free state in US and make any difference.

Well, currently with all the COVID-19 situation affecting production, things may be delayed. But the rumors of an imminent AppleTV release has been circulating since last month.

Then again I wonder if the release would make it any different?

Anyone here pairs a Dolby Atmos soundbar with their Apple TV? Was tempted to go out and purchase one of those Soundbars with Dobly Atmost to take advantage of the Apple TV.

if playing Apple TV+ streaming got Atmos, for local streaming only support 5.1 Atmos, most 7.1 cannot support that is via Infuse app. As for Plex, no go as yet.

apple tv is actually only useful for doing airplay.

if mainly doing youtube etc. as long as ur tv comes with the app, you do not need apple tv.

the apple tv 4k and apple tv price are so closed. do not understand why apple still sell the HD version since no one will buy the HD since it still have the old A8 chip and it does not support 4k while the 4k one has A10 chip which will be much more future proof.

You can’t, a workaround is to setup vpn on your router instead(if it supports vpn) but then all your devices will pass through that vpn connection.

Finally my Apple TV 4K YouTube is support 4K (2160p) resolution. No HDR yet though.

If your Apple TV 4K YouTube had no 2160p resolution to choose from, try change region to USA and tada the 4K resolution is appear.

It doesn't appear for me even on latest 14.0.2 when my original region was set to Malaysia.

Too bad still no HDR. So for HDR content I still need using my TV YouTube apps.

I read in other forums that YouTube 4K availability is like playing lottery. One user with multiple devices could get it to work on some but not all. Seems like it depends on YouTube and how they're actually rolling it out.

Anyone with VPN playing HBO Max from your applets? Do you face connection issues or buffering?

If you are using ExpressVPN's media streamer, you will have occasional buffering due to the host server / DDNS.

I just switch on the VPN switch on my router and stream it instead.

I'm using OpenVPN - basically generated the VPN file (ovpn) and install it to the router.

LOL no... I think overall should be faster.

But I think the Youtuber just want to create story to make people watch his Youtube

But what he said is true also la. If GPU is slower then its kinda sad for an upgrade

But its good for old gen TV box. We still possibly have the fastest GPU TV box.

Yeah, you also able to do the calibration already with current TV Box.

I hope I'm not the one who kill your intention! So sorry!

EDITED: There's rumour about gaming Apple TV using A14X. Maybe fake news.

That's true. There is no compelling reason to get a new ATV...

And gpu for old atv 4k makes it even bad idea. Furthermore we can buy new remote.

But I love the old one. At first hard to use. After that, I become professional can use it to scroll easily.

If you set your Apple TV 4K in Dolby Vision, the calibration will not work and tell you calibration is not required.

I don't set as Dolby Vision as the scrolling is not smooth at all.

I set it as RGB High SDR.

It is unnecessary set as Dolby Vision or HDR as the movie will auto switch to Dolby Vision or HDR when the film is Dolby Vision or HDR.

In RGB High SDR, scrolling is smoother and not stutter like in Dolby Vision.

The A14X I suspect maybe is Gaming Console. I predict Apple will out gaming console.

Anyway I already buy new Apple TV 4K, they is some changes like Fix Dolby Vision black crush issue (I hardly notice though).

Now hope I can get it by Today, now at KL Facility.
