ok..say for some reason there's a financier who is willing to give one of u like rm1.5 million to produce a movie...and of course he wants returns from his investment...the reason why he does not want to produce it himself is because he does not think he has the will to do it...coz he knows malaysians' attitude towards their own films... whistling.gif

but since he has the money, he wants to get somebody to do it...and he'd like to approach new guys...coz he wants something different...and hopefully this new venture might overtake hollywood or something tongue.gif

so just a theoretical question - would any of u guys have the guts to grab this opportunity and blow his mind...(or hollywood) by producing the best malaysia movie ever and try to reap millions of profits from box office collection by just utilising the 1.5 million - nothing more nothing less? genre - love, action, drama, porn etc is up to you...as long as it could be sold legitimately in the cinemas

and remember, the money can only be used to make movies...not venturing into any other business deals...and the market is only the cinema taking, forget the ancilliary markets etc...

don't ask me why i'm asking this...i think it's just a relevant question for this thread...since i see so many great movie reviewers here....and maybe there's aspiring film producers here too? tongue.gif

so any comments? or criticisns? or whatever?

remember...it's rm1.5 million...not USD1.5 million...

i know i would.

heck, i know i could make a decent movie with a budget of RM100k. forget famous stars, special effects and all that. there are a lot of talented people out there, it's just a matter of finding them. the 100k does not include promotion, adverts etc - just the making of the film.

I'm more interested in how porn can be legitimately sold in cinemas. =)

In all seriousness, i would assume many fledgling producers, directors would jump at a chance to produce movies with that kind of budget.

But there's still other factors that may deter it though. With the kind of censorship and restrictions placed on local made movies, there is a feeling that the lack of funds is not the sole reason more films arent being made here.

Quality films that is.

porn in cinemas?

that was the 70s, my friend. video player killed the silver screen porn industry.

as a person involved with the creative industry, i'm sure the director could make a way around the censorship, wherever it's concerned. but too many directors use censorship as an excuse of producing bad films. yeah, always blame it on the censorship.

to me, even with such strong vice of censorship over the materials, there are still a HUGE pool of potential stories to be made.

Movie maker gives us some un-found aspirations~.. Else, sit back & enjoy others's hardwork before u decide to spoilt the audience. Dun waste the crews effort to produce something getting repetitive inside the rotten shell.

If der is such big funds for Local film-maker. Try not to spent on a Malay style of comedy(anymore). It is goin to abandon another side of audiences or market. U know what i mean. The culture & background favour. Forget bout boosting own culture for once a while. We are living together on the same land.

Needless to produce something Gigantic & complex like Matrix or LOTR, Lookin into another strong asian country such as Japanese & Korean movie world.
All the above proves that good movie is not necessary haf to depend on CGI effects to win audience's attention.

It is the story-telling dat counts.

During the 70s porn was legal on the silver screens in Malaysia? If that was true i claim ignorance, i wasnt born then =)

On the issue of censorship, you may have a point. But think about the last two local films banned recently. One touched on the subject of communism, the other on foreigners being mistreated.

If the govt are so quick to clampdown on matters outside what we are normally getting now (pontianak stories, trivial love stories, etc), i don't see how there is an incentive for local producers to be more creative.

not really, some indie low budget film can get big time actor. Really depends on the actors whether they are going for the money or they are interested in the script n willing to explore their acting skills.

The problem is you need to produce the film that the current market wants in order to make profits. No point in producing masterpieces with only a few lyners/critics could appreciate while the ordinary folks shy away. Sadly enough majority malaysian taste is same old same old. Currently, from my pov illegal racing is hot in our market. You know what will be hotter? an illegal racing slapstick comedy with all the akademi fantasians thrown in + saiful apek. Gotta have saiful to make profits.

I have no knowledge at all. So if of current state then the answer is no even if i have RM1.5mil.

If i have the knowledge I would produce a film but with a lower budget probably.

If I have the money, why not.

Instead, I will produce a local movie that 2-3 times better than Yasmin and Jack Neo. In the movie, the language that they use is not restricted at all. You all can not only hear malay language as there are english, mandarin, cantonese, hokkien, tamil and many more language that is found in Malaysia.

The movie will be about how people is being affect by the malaysia's goverment rules, religion rules and NEP towards their freedom.
