Indonesia develops gunship variant of CN-235 aircraft

Key Points

• PT Dirgantara has confirmed plans to market a gunship variant of the CN-235 turboprop aircraft
• Work on a demonstrator platform is currently under way, and the company aims for its first flight in 2019

Indonesian state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara (PTDI) has begun work on a gunship variant of the CN-235 twin-engine multipurpose aircraft, the company has confirmed to Jane’s .

The aircraft, which is based on the company’s CN-235-220 airframe, is being developed as a demonstrator platform, and will be marketed to potential customers in the Middle Eastern, African, and Central and Southeast Asian regions, said the company.

The aircraft is being modified to carry one single-barrelled 30 mm DEFA 553 aircraft cannon on the portside aft of its fuselage. The weapon has been salvaged from a retired Douglas A-4H Skyhawk that was formerly in service with the Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Udara: TNI-AU).

The DEFA 553 cannon has a muzzle velocity of 810 m/s, and can fire up to 1,200 rds/min at both air and surface targets. There are also plans to complement this weapon with electro-optical targeting systems and a laser designator. However, the company has yet to decide on systems that will be selected for these roles on the demonstrator.

Other differences that the gunship demonstrator will feature over earlier versions of PTDI’s CN-235 include using General Electric (GE) CT7-9 turboprop engines, instead of the older CT7-7. The aircraft has also been built with wingtip devices to improve the aircraft’s overall fuel efficiency.

Indonesia confirms plan to buy US-made Hercules C-130 planes

Rabu, 29 Agustus 2018 23:03 WIB
Reporter: Antara

Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has confirmed a plan to buy Hercules C-130 planes and other transport planes from the United States to support the development of its defense architecture.

"In future, Indonesia plans to buy several primary weaponry systems, including Hercules C-130 planes, and other heavy-duty transport planes from the US," Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said, while paying a courtesy call on US Secretary of Defense James Mattis in Washington DC, on Tuesday.

In the long run, Indonesia is committed to gradually improving its primary weaponry systems on a self-reliant basis and under a partnership scheme with friendly countries, Ryacudu stated.

"Through the partnership, Indonesia will gradually be able to build defense industry as part of the national strategic industry on its own," he noted.

The former army chief of staff added that Indonesia aimed to not only be able to meet its primary weaponry systems but also to sell them to friendly countries.

Gov't-to-gov't procurement eyed for Navy submarine program

By Priam Nepomuceno  August 30, 2018, 12:08 pm

MANILA -- Should the Philippine Navy (PN) submarine acquisition program pushes through, it will be acquired via government-to-government procurement, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Thursday.

"The submarine, if we finally decide to buy them, will be on a government-to-government procurement and under a loan so that we do not need a large upfront capital outlay," he said in a message to the Philippine News Agency when asked for updates on the project.

The defense chief earlier said the DND is looking at proposals made by Russia, South Korea, Germany and France for the PN submarine acquisition program.

Of the said countries, only Russia has expressed willingness to offer its Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines to the Philippines via "soft loan".

Lorenzana said the multi-role fighter (MRF) project, which is scheduled in the latter part of Horizon Two of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program, is not being moved to the Horizon Three.

"No it is not being moved to the 3rd Horizon (Horizon) The senior leaders (military) will soon table for decision the planned MRF acquisition," he added.

The MRFs are fighter aircraft capable of performing air-superiority, ground-attack, recon and other missions - aside from being agile and capable of attaining supersonic speeds. Among examples of the aircraft include the American-made F-16 and F-18 jets.

Horizon Two is scheduled for 2018 to 2022 while Horizon Three is slated for 2023 to 2028.

Horizon One lasted from 2013 to 2017 and resulted in the acquisition of the three Del Pilar-class frigates, 12 FA-50PH light-lift interim fighters, two strategic sealift vessels, to name a few. (PNA)

Boeing and Indonesian aircraft company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) signed on Wednesday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore collaborative areas of opportunity to include manufacturing technology, certification, as well as support and maintenance of vertical lift products.

“We see this memorandum as an important step in support of Indonesia’s vision for current and future economic development as well as the growth of the country’s aerospace sector,” said Boeing Southeast Asia president Skip Boyce said in a press release on Thursday.

Boyce said the MoU demonstrated commitment to the growth of Indonesia’s aerospace industry and providing advanced capabilities to the armed forces.

Lorenzana backtracks on Russian submarines

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana tells lawmakers the country might not be able to afford the maintenance of submarines

MANILA, Philippines – Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has backtracked on the urgency of acquiring Russian submarines amid concerns raised against the plan.

“It is still in the planning stage,” Lorenzana told lawmakers during a budget hearing on Wednesday, August 29.

He told lawmakers the country might not be able to afford the maintenance of submarines.

“The congressman is correct that a submarine is very expensive. In the first place, the capital outlay is already very expensive. To maintain it is also very expensive. To man it, you need two sets of crews that will alternate in manning the submarine,” Lorenzana said.

He was speaking to Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano, one of the lawmakers who raised concern over the cost of the project.

Lorenzana’s answers during the budget hearing departed from his pronouncements prior to his Moscow trip last week. On August 9, he said the submarines talks “will likely” push through with Russia, which is willing to offer them on a loan.

He previously said the country may have its first submarine by 2023. (READ: PH pivot to Russia advances with port visit, submarine talks)

Prioritize surface fleet

Lorenzana said the military will instead prioritize the acquisition of more brand new surface fleet and “will decide that later on” if the country needs to acquire submarines.

“We’re looking at it on the idea that it is a good deterrent capability. If we have at least two, at nagtatago diyan, magdadalawang isip sila kung pupunta dito (hiding there, other countries will think twice about entering our territory),” said Lorenzana.

He said South Korea, France, Japan, and India are among the other countries peddling their submarines to the Philippines.

“We will still decide. Hindi pa ako decided diyan (I haven’t decided on that). We are still in the process of procuring more surface vessels,” Lorenzana said.

At Trump-Kim summit, RSAF showed the world it was operationally ready

user posted image

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) stepped up to the challenge of US President Donald Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and showed the world it was operationally ready, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the RSAF50 Parade on Saturday (Sep 1).

Speaking at Tengah Air Base, PM Lee, who was the guest of honour at the parade, cited the summit as one of the "extraordinary circumstances" that required RSAF officers to answer to the call of duty at short notice.

"The RSAF showed the world during the Summit that you are operationally ready," said Mr Lee. "You were tasked to defend our skies by forming a protective 'dome' over Singapore.

"You had more than 20 aircraft in the air or ready to take off, at any moment; more than 10 ground-based air defence systems stood guard, and unmanned aerial vehicles were on standby. This was a live operation, not a dry exercise."

user posted image

Mr Lee noted that the officers had only two weeks to prepare for the historic event and that many had to cancel leave plans and forfeit vacation bookings.

"But you stepped up to the challenge, and showed Singapore and the world your capabilities and dedication," he said.

In his speech, the prime minister also raised the "continuing and unending task" of making sure Singapore's equipment, technology and systems are up to date.

He said that as the Air Force grew, it improvised with what it had, and progressively built up and renewed its equipment.

user posted image

"It must be pursued consistently and resolutely, with adequate resources, conscious of our defence needs and the international context," said Mr Lee.

"We do not simply go for the most expensive and newest. But we always acquire what makes the most operational sense for us. Sometimes, we even buy second-hand equipment, such as the KC-135 air-to-air refuelling tanker aircraft," he added.

user posted image

The parade, which consisted of a marching contingent of almost 500 personnel and flypasts involving 20 aircraft, was held in conjunction with the RSAF’s 50th anniversary.

It also capped off the RSAF’s Golden Jubilee celebrations this year, which began in February with the Singapore Airshow.

Other events held earlier this year in the lead up to the parade included live demonstrations, static displays and interactive exhibits at five different locations islandwide as well as the biggest aerial showcase of the year at the RSAF50@Marina Barrage.

user posted image

A display from a blue RSAF50-themed F-15SG kickstarted the parade, wowing a crowd of close to 1,400 guests, including Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen and Chief of Air Force Major General (MG) Mervyn Tan.

Bringing together elements of the past, present and future, the parade paid tribute to the forefathers of the RSAF, with a mobile column drive-past featuring pioneer personnel saluting the crowd.

Capping off the show was a flypast which involved a sequence of aircraft such as the CH-47 Chinook Helicopter, F-16D+ fighter jets and six F-15SGs.

Another highlight for guests was a static display, which included current and retired aircraft.

PM Lee was also on hand to view the newest addition to the RSAF’s fleet - the A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT). The aerial refuelling aircraft arrived in Singapore last month and was making its first public appearance.

As part of the celebrations, PM Lee also unveiled the RSAF 50 commemorative mural at a post-parade gallery.

The 10m by 4m canvas mural is a collage of 50,000 photographs collected from members of the public as well as contributors such as President Halimah Yacob and the PM himself. It aims to showcase the achievements of the RSAF over the last 50 years and will be permanently displayed in the Air Force Museum.

“It was important for us to have something to hold on to (and) remember what we have done so far,” explained ME 5 Edward Kang, RSAF50 commemorative mural sub-committee chairman. “I hope when Singaporeans see it, they will have the quiet confidence that the RSAF is there for them to defend their skies.”

“The (parade’s) theme of honouring the past, celebrating the present and inspiring the future is designed to round off the year,” said parade chairman Col Lau Boon Ping. “It is really to describe the journey that we have taken over the past 50 years.”

Considering that this is one of the PH Navy Gregorio del Pilar-class frigates (in truth old Hamilton-class US coast guard ships laugh.gif ) , which are probably the best ships the PH navy has currently, I doubt that.
