KD Laksamana Tan Pusmah during LIMA 19. Note the rear launchers for the Otomat Anti-Ship missiles are already removed, although the Aspide SAM missiles remain.

NGPC Deliveries by December ’19

March 27, 2019

Malaysian shipyard Destini Shipbuilding will complete deliveries of a 2016 order for six 44.25 m New Generation Patrol Crafts to the Malaysian maritime agency by the end of this year. German shipbuilder FASSMER Defence is providing the design license agreement for the manufacture of the advanced patrol crafts in Malaysia and Destini Shipbuilding has already delivered three vessels to the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

The first vessel KM Bagan Datuk was commissioned in March 2017 and the vessels undertake missions such as search and rescue, firefighting, fishery protection, law enforcement, disaster relief, training, pollution control and EEZ (Economic Exclusion Zone) duties. Each NGPC has a range of 2,000 nautical miles and is capable of speeds up to 24 knots. The vessel is armed with an Aselsan 30mm remote controlled naval gun and a Thales UAV.

German Shipyard FASSMER Defence won THE contract to provide the engineering and material support packages for six NGPCs for the MMEA.FASSMER has grown rapidly and did not export maritime products until a decade ago. Over the last50 years, the company has designed 50 different patrol vessels. The company is also showcasing anew patrol vessel called the ‘Flex Patrol Vessel’ for the 1st time at the ongoing LIMA. The new vessel entered the market in 2018 and is now available for export.

Always wonder though, how does RMN choose or decide on the pennant number? Are there any classifications or convention that RMN follows in determining the hull number? The same for RMAF & the tail number of the aerial assets..

Any idea?

Sigh. To be expected.

don't think there's any Aspide upgrades

The missiles should have expired. I will guess that the Aspide launcher can’t be as easily removed.

Not sure at this stage if the missiles are are being replaced or not because the Otomat missiles certainly are still produced nowadays by MDBA. Upgrade seems unlikely though due to the tight defence budget nowadays.

AFAIK the missiles were resold to the manufacturer (OTO Melara) for scrapping, with the proceeds going to the purchase of an electro-optical FCS for each of the Laksamana-class corvettes.

AFAIK the Laksamana-class corvettes was supposed to be phased out with the introduction of the LMS. But just recently they did a refit on all four ship prior to LIMA 19, so probably the Navy still had plans for them for the time being it seems.

Probably just until enough LMS numbers are available. Decommissioning them now will result in too few ships in service. Doing a refit now also makes the corvettes more attractive to potential buyers in case they decide to sell them off later.

Highly unlikely

Anyway we are moving on to Gowinds and NSM

IINM the Otomats we resold to Italy were used for developing the latest Otomat/Teseo model, which is deployed on the Italian FREMM ships

I highly doubt MDBA is using 20-year old 2nd hand Otomat missiles to develop the latest missiles for their latest frigate. laugh.gif
