Man, just when I thought I wanna get a 8800 series card, these reviews had to come up.

Looks like for now, DX10 cards are still not needed. Maybe crysis would show off the power of DX10? hmm.gif

Read the whole review and tell me what you guys think... smile.gif

What was surprising was that there were practically no difference in picture quality between DX10 and DX9. The only thing that was better in DX10 was the soft edges for particles....

Another thing was that the size of rams didn't help at all..... doh.gif Even at higher resolutions...

Hey guys, I just joined the 8800 club!!! Got myself a 8800GTS 640mb!!! rclxm9.gif

Really happy with it. Not much time to play with it yet but so far, all games can play at max settings. Using only 19' so max resolution is 1280x1024.

Managed to do a few benchmarks....

3Dmarks06 - SM2.0 - 3970, HDR/SM3.0 - 3782, CPU 3020, Total : 9295
3Dmarks05 - Total : 16651
3Dmarks03 - Total : 32451
3Dmarks01 - Total : 52754

Stock speed but CPU at 3.5Ghz....
All default settings
GPU Fan 80%, core temp 76'c

Dunno why fan can't be controlled by rivatuner unless low-level settings. Need to try further later. Maybe download ntune....

Haiyaa.... have to go out soon.... sad.gif

Y u buy 640mb for use with 1280x1024? U shud had saved the $ by getting the 320mb card.  The 640mb card is kinda in no man's land actually. Not enuf to go to 1920x1200 n too much for 1680x1050. later u upgrade to 24" oso the card cannot tahan.
*
I sorta know about that. However, there are certain games that need more than 256-320mb rams. On my previous 7800GS with 256mb rams and gaming on 1280x1024, I sometimes get warnings when I try to set the texture to maximum - some warning that my GC's ram is not enough and will slow down game play.

There was a reference to games that require 512mb ram but I can't seem to find it..... hmm.gif

How did you know? Hehe, found the thread. I actually posted the thread, already forgot! sweat.gif

Yeah, in that thread, I've posted a linked which showed that Doom 3 and Call of Duty 2 benefits from 512mb ram at 1280x1024 (although I don't know where they got the references from)

Because there is an actual option in the gfx settings for Doom3 that is specifically for 512mb cards n above only. When u click on the option to turn it on, it warns u that it's meant for 512mb cards only. COD2 I didnt realise coz there's no specific option n I've been on cards with more than 1gb ram for a long time n never realised there was a drop in performance with cards less than 512mb.
*
OIC. Forgot about that already.

I'm quite sure that future games will also take advantage of 512mb or more rams, even on 1280x1024. Hmm.... maybe I should upgrade to 24' wide screen? hmm.gif Hehe, my wife would kill me!!! wink.gif

Anyway, to owners of 8800 series card, does your core/mem speed run at lower speed in 2D or still at full 3D speed.

Mine is running at full speed whether it is 2D or 3D. Thinking of downclocking the core/mem when at 2D settings..... Anybody tried this? hmm.gif

Windows Vista is always on 3D mode. That's y the cards r always so hot.
*
OIC. I'm doing some reseach on downclocking the card when in 2D mode. Apparently, the 8800 series cards are not stable if automatically switched from a downclocked 2D mode to a stock 3D mode (using rivatuner). Some people are saying that that's the reason why these cards are running at the same speed whether it is 2D or 3D.

I mean, what's the point of running at full speed even at 2D???? Higher temperature, more power consumption, higher fan speed and more stress for the card!!!
----Example : My previous 7800GS will run at core/mem 275/650 at 2D and automatically ramp up to 440/650 at 3D. nod.gif

Anyway, what I'm planning to do is to set the core/mem speed at a lower speed when in 2D mode and not gaming. Then to manually set it to 3D core/mem speed when gaming. Wished these cards can do that automatically.

Again, my question : Has anybody downclock their card before? How low can you go? Any problems when this is done automatically using, say, rivatuner?

More importantly : Will there be any problems/stress to the card if we downclock too low? hmm.gif

QUOTE(tanghm @ Aug 27 2007, 09:19 AM)
I  have tried downclocking it to like 250MHz core but the temperature reduction is not by much, only -5'C or so.

Mine runs at full 512/792 even at desktop mode, cant they make 2D/3D clocks to run independantly to save energy cost.

@obefiend
Unless you force the fan to go at 100% duty cycle, 70'C idle temp is perfectly normal for me, which is my idle temp during 60% duty cycle.
Now forcing 100% duty cycle, idle temp is 57-61'C depending on room temperature. i.e. 57'C @ 28.5'C, 61'C @ 31'C
*
Some reduction in temperature is not bad. I'm just thinking that these nice card should not be running at full speed even at 2D mode!!! No doubt the lifespan won't be much different but I think downclocking the card for 2D use is a good practice. Imagine having a 8800 GTS/GTX running full speed 24/7 but using the rig for bittorrent!!! rclxub.gif

Anyway, I'm going to find out more about downclocking the 8800 GTS..... even now, my rig is at idle (running folding, idle GC) but the GC is running at an unnecessary full speed setting of 512/792..... rclxub.gif

At work now, going to find a stable downclock when I get home....... smile.gif

Sure. smile.gif

Remember that previous generations of GC has lower 2D settings and higher 3D settings. I just can't understand why the newest generation can't do that!!! doh.gif

Going to ask Nvidia about this, looks like they have a forum at their website too.... nod.gif

*
Apparently, the 8800GTS only need a 400w PSU (I guess must be a good brand with proper TRUE power version) with the 12v rail at least 26A. I'm using an enermax liberty 500w and no problems so far..... icon_idea.gif

Right, this is what I have tried on my 8800 GTS.

Downclock both 2D/3D setting (together) using rivatuner
Setting 1 : Stock core/mem : 513/792mhz, fan speed at 80%
Setting 2 : Downclock core/mem : 300/400 mhz, fan speed at 50%

I'm using rivatuner launcher to either set it to setting 1 (using F9 key) and setting 2 (using F10 key).

This way, when I'm in GC idle mode, e.g. surfing, folding...., I'll just press F9 key and Setting 2 will be set.
If I wanna play games, I'll just press F10 key and Setting 1 will be set. smile.gif

So far, the downclocking is stable. I can even play 3D games at full setting on that speed!!! No problems switching from setting 1 to 2 or vice versa.... sweat.gif

The reason I'm not setting the 2D and 3D separately is because I need to find out whether there would be any problems if it the GC automatically rev up from 2D settings to 3D settings. Already posted in Nvidia forum by no good replies yet. Might just email customer support if I don't get any answers..... wink.gif

yo kmarc...i read ur topic in the nvidia forums....

about the fan speed thingy....u can check out the first post. theres a link there to an 8800 fan speed guide.

i did it and it works....the steps are a little tedious...but it still works.
*
Ok, will check it.

If I'm not mistaken, you mean the fan speed will change according to the temperature right? I know about that way of setting as I was using it for my previous 7800GS. Will take a look later.

Anyway, I also emailed ASUS technical support. Let's see what they have to say regarding the 2D/3D settings.... smile.gif

I prefer Rivatuner as it has all the functions.

what about the voltage? if we reduce the speed.. isn't that the core will overvoltage?
*
Probably not overvoltage. Just that it will be running at stock voltage at underclocked speed.

I have been wondering about this too, whether underclocking the card will cause any problems in the long run. Anyway, I have already posted a question in Nvidia's forum and also emailed ASUS. Still awaiting replies from them..... smile.gif

QUOTE(cstkl1 @ Aug 29 2007, 02:43 AM)
heck all of ure temps are freaking hot...

both of my sli idles at 60-65C and loads at 81C...

u guys need to do this first.. noticed a big difference.

1. Damn good cable management
2. Make sure u have one 12inch fan blowing towards the pcie powerinput front

like for me using stacker 830 i did a inver on the hdd and i have 12 inch fans sucking the fan to the cards... IE same as Ian Ho king Kong...

very big difference with this....
use ntune for nvidia mobos with rulez on temp control....
or http://www.guru3d.com/article/article/449/
but heck just run it 100% 24/7....

been doing that for years and no complains on any of the cards i had.
*
True true. However, for my naked rig, the card is idling at 60-65'c at 50% fan speed, and load at 75-80'c at 80% fan speed.
I haven't run the fan at 100% as I don't want the fan to run so loud! nod.gif

Wished I had more fans. Now using 5 cooler master silent fans to blow on my rig..... rclxms.gif
