oh ok haha the main and obvious disadvantage of pcb-mount stabilizers is that for plated builds, you need desolder everything in order to fix or replace them.

yes you should always make sure all wires are secured properly first before soldering. well, i have a build with these stabilizers too. the wires of these cherry screw-ins are relatively easier to pop off, compared to gmk screw-ins. however, it's not really common for this to happen.

imo the better option is equalz c3 stabilizers. however currently they are only released in limited quantities.

These? Wow, the comparison pic is really convincing.

Limited quantities huh? I have an itch to buy a set or 3 while they're still in stock. Not that I have the plans or the budget to build anything any time soon...

uh? injection marks? ok i don't know about this.

maybe there are obvious differences between abs and pbt caps from tai-hao. you can check out tai-hao.com for pictures. it really looks like they have those marks on some of their abs sets. i don't find the same on their pbt sets.

MiTo himself has spoken!
https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboard...ad_bad_molding/
”What you are seeing are not cracks, but are flow lines, where the material flows onto the key. This is unfortunately an unavoidable process of insert molding and magnified by both color and the top texture of the SA keycaps. It has zero to do with pressure or cool down time. While we do what we can to limit the existence of flow lines, in most cases they cannot be removed completely.”

Melissa, Signature Plastics when I pointed this out on Pulse SA R1 back in 2014.

QUOTE(horns @ Jan 30 2020, 09:50 AM)
yes. for now it's a limited run. however i guess they should be available from time to time.

i have tested those from gmk, cherry, epbt, kbdfans (i believe this one is a variant from epbt). they all have their shares in terms of 'issues'. (e.g. good-quality stabs have very little or no wire rattles; they are smooth during key travels; their stems secure and hold key caps firmly) compared to these pcb-mount screw-ins, c3 stabs solve the obvious issue: securing wires relatively better.

edit: there are other options, including those from durock and zeal. not sure about their performance.

Well it popped out again, and back in by itself again...
I ordered a set of C3. See if I dare to desolder the whole board again and risk damage again.

I just bought my first mechanical keyboard and while I'm liking it so far, the problem right now is that the keyboard appears to be too tall and feels quite uncomfortable to type on.  Any recommended ways to make it a bit more comfortable?  hmm.gif
*
I felt the same when I first got mine. I corrected my typing posture and now I'm used to it.

I just went to Lowyat to check whatever Mechanical keyboard I can try on. Tried every razer & logitech products. I am surprise to find that I do not actually like the optical switch on the Razer Huntman TE. I seem to enjoy typing the most with the Razer green switch on Blackwidow... Does that mean the Cherry Blue switch will be the closest to my liking for other non razer keyboard?

I tried ducky, but the shop only let me try type on it with the plastic wrapper on top. so basically I cant really get the best feel out of it.

Other brand I came across is IKBC at Viewnet. The sample keyboard they have there is with cherry Red switch, which I can finally confirm is not to my liking.. Anyone using IKBC? is this brand "ok" to begin with? sweat.gif

IKBC boards are nice and solid.

Ohhh shocking.gif this is built from scratch! cool. I actually like your keyboard size and keys arrangement. Very neat and compact! Got all the keys I need in the smallest form factor. Do you have any recommendation of case that has similar layout as this?
*
The form factor is called 75%, hence the caption.

There are lots of cheap prebuilt boards on Aliexpress if you search for it. If 75% doesn't work, try searching for 84 key as well. If you want to go custom, some shops also provide assembly service at additional cost if you buy all components from them.

If you want to find high quality prebuilts, I can only recommend the Vortex Tab 75, Vortex Race 3, and Drevo Excalibur.

nice smile.gif

another good thing about this stabilizer is that it's pre-clipped, like what we do to stabilizers' sliders (clipping mod), to get rid of the mushy feel of stabilized keys when typing.
you can pm GRexer or quovadis123 to see if they still have stock for this. alternatively you can join future group buys if you saw one at our mymkb fb group.
*
Yup I did clip and band aid my Cherry screw ins when I built my board.

I might not use these C3s though. I have clipped the offending wire back in 3 times now. The second time I paid more attention to it. I noticed that it actually popped out immediately when I put on my walnut wood keycap. Because it had a tendency to be difficult to secure the stabs in the keycap, I would push it down and rock it left and right to get the stabs all the way in the keycap and that is when it pops out.

So I didn't rock my keycap on the third time....so far so good. Only time will tell.

Thanks ! I begin to understand the 75% size. I looked into the 3 prebuilts you recommended , and I love the look of the Vortex Tab 75 the best. But seems difficult to find and buy. May I know for these prebuilt keyboard , I’ll still be able to buy/swap all the key caps in the future if I want to ? Also the switches, I’ll b able to swap if after sometime I like a change of feel.

Will go fully custom cost more than any of these prebuilt? Say my budget is below rm500. And also I’m fond with the idea of going wireless/ Bluetooth if possible to make my set up cleaner . So far I only know Ikbc offer the Bluetooth version . Is there much other option ? Sorry for asking so many questions 🤭 I think I started to get carry away

Vortex can be bought on Taobao. Though with the current situation, it might take a while... I ordered something on Tuesday and it still hasn't been shipped. Taobao sellers aren't usually that slow.

Yes you can change keycaps, they all use switches with MX style stems.

None of the prebuilts I mentioned have hotswap PCBs, so you'll need to desolder and solder to change switches.

Custom is generally more expensive.

Current version of Vortex Tab 75 can do Bluetooth and USB C. IINM there was a first version that did not.

I am currently using Phantom Elite TKL, running on KAILH Bronze switches; which i would say i love it sooo much as i can type faster than i used to. I have few orders coming in to upgrade the KAILH switches like Ninja Keycaps, spring replacement, Orings and lubes. Customising the switches before considering replacing with Cherry MX Green/RGB Green. But with the spring change on KAILH switches, I am expecting it to behave almost the similar as the intended MX Green.
Bonus point for this Keyboard is that it is hotswapable, which sounds good for me until I am looking to custom make one myself.

Thanks horns and niakulah for the recommendations. Man, mech keys are an addiction. I still can’t believe how expensive zeal switches are. If I accidentally bend one of the pins I’ll just cry.

Another rusty theme for you. GMK Copper. Only 7 days left to order.

So I done dumb dumb and bought the Hakko Presto and soldering tips, only to find that these tips do not fit this soldering iron.

I wanted to use a K type tip that is long enough to touch both switch pins at the same time so that you can easily remove them when desoldering. Turns out, there are NO K type tips for the Hakko Presto. doh.gif

So what do you guys think?
1. Get the chisel tip for the Hakko Presto. Still way better than my current cheapo soldering iron. Both iron and tip will be Hakko! Spend another RM28. Give up on using a K type tip.
2. Get this cheapo soldering iron that accepts 936 style K type tips that I already have. Also just another RM28.
3. Get a cheapish soldering station that accepts 936 style K type tips that I already have. Spend another RM85.
4. Don't cheap out and get the real deal. Spend another RM585

if you're used to your current iron, imo you can just get the right tip (1.)

however, imo it's better to invest on better soldering stations, with a functional temperature control.

by the way, even hakko-fx-888d is still cheaper than a set of gmk caps.
*
Thanks. Yeah I know it's cheaper than GMK, which is why I'm trying my best to monitor and eventually join a GB for EPBT or Infinikey or maybe even KAT.
