Dang...mine power adapter's cable (the thinner one) just melted on me. Anyone has any experience on opening up the power adapter before? Looks like it can be fixed by cutting off the melted part and rejoined inside of the adapter.

lol, I've tried on one, iBook g4 square white adapter, it's so hard to open till I give up on it. You need the right tools.

Yeah..mine is exactly the same model that you mentioned...what kind of tools that I might need? A hammer and an axe? It looks like you need to break the casing in order to open it up.

yes, you have to break it. even to break it it's so darn hard. you need tools from workshop. at lease a bench vices to hold it and a strong sharp tool to split the case.

let me know if you found a better way to do it.

Prepare yourself with a big screw-driver and a hammer. To open it up is not an easy task. Ive opened 2 adapter in my life. One is iBook G4 and the other is PB G4. Both had the same level of difficulties.

Once open, need to do some reconnection back... soldering is the only option. As to essemble it back... almost zero success... unless using a hard tape and a powerful gum. "Gam gajah"??? believe me, Naaaaah... not good enough!

Er.... no better option meh than breaking the damn thing and then soldering it or taping it back? UGLEEEE lah wei...

And it sure is unfortunate I don't have a spare one for my MBP - don't like carrying it all the place - if only I could have one in the office and one at home, that'll be sufficient!! kEKekekEKkekekeke.... but I'm not willing to pay the additional $ to get the additional one !

i think the new design of the adapter doesn't have these problem.

Since you guys tried and it is hard like a brick, I will look for a free day to 'break' this adapter and prepare myself for lots of frustration ahead.

Actually this is my 2nd power adapter. Someone stole my first adapter at a hotel a 2 years back. Stupid id***t. Cost me a bomb to get my current one back then. That's why I have to pry it open to fix it this time.

Well i remember there's compatible adapter brand Macally selling for around RM150.

Are we only referring to power adapters for 'mobile' Mac machines? [iBook, PowerBook, etc etc?] Or are we also referring to those of the G2/G3/G4/G5s too?

How long you took from the time you crack it till you tape it back? 2 hours?

Man...that was a bad crack there.....uhhh sakit.....now having 2nd tots of doing that to my baby power adapter...

err.... actually I lost count, it's like once a blue moon i will take it out and crack it for few minutes and put it back to storage. Lastnight I went all the way with hammering, and yes, it open up. After it opened up then I realised why it's so hard to open. It's superglued almost every corner...

So have u tested if it'll work? There are pros and cons to the adaptor being so 'difficult' to crack open. In fact, I think it's good - I certainly don't expect the wiring inside to die on me (but it obviously did for some of u guys) and I certainly expect the thing to be hardy from all the carrying around....

Speaking of which, is it ok for the MBP to use the MB's charger? (MBP = 85w and MB = 60w)

Guys, with all the reports of power adapters exploding and batteries catching fire; are you sure you want to do this?

Sometimes, it's cheaper to spend a little. Certainly safer.

Sometimes, it's good to have an extra working adapter just for rainy day. Ofcourse, use with caution.


And it's working fine.
