Hi all,

Nasi Lemak is EVERYWHERE in Malaysia. There's the cheap roadside stall in the mornings where you can just swing by, illegally double park and hop out to buy ... then there's the super premium nasi lemaks sold at cafes or high end hotel restaurants.

So tell me... whether it's a hyped up stall... or some stall in your hometown... where's your favourite nasi lemak? I'll likely find my way there to try it and review it! Doesn't matter where in Malaysia! So this would be my personal project. Give me the address and name... and I'll get my ass over to try it!

I personally prefer the nasi lemak at TBR Wangsa Maju Setapak (which is near Tar College). Or the nasi lemak red jeep near Wangsa Maju there.

*
I'll definitely make a trip there. I've gotta travel maybe 30 plus KM to get to SS2.

I don't find a real good nasi lemak in KL. I always look for nasi lemak when I'm going back to my hometown Kuantan.

1 - Nasi lemak at Restoran Zaman is quite good. Open for breakfast.
2 - Simple nasi lemak opposite of Megamall is good too. Open in evening till midnight.
3 - Nasi lemak stall in Kampung Tengah is quite tasty. Open for breakfast

One downside about nasi lemak in Kuantan is they don't serve many side dished like in KL.
*
Sometimes the best nasi lemak is the one with the most fragrant rice and sambal. I'll take into consideration. May make a trip to east coast this year. Haven't been to that part of Malaysia.

I just had it. The chicken is nice... the rice... could be way more fragrant. The sambal though is quite sweet and not overly spicy. Those epic spicy lovers would find it less satisfying cos not hot enough biggrin.gif

Yes, you're correct, the sambal is on the sweet side. If want a bit more spicy sambal, there's 1 restaurant in Setia Alam called Pestle & Mortar and their sambal nasi lemak is a bit more spicy but the chicken is not as nice as Village Park. The rice maybe a bit more fragrant or about the same.

To be honest, I also never find any nasi lemak with spicy enough sambal because nasi lemak sambal style is always on the sweet side. If want more spicy, don't eat nasi lemak but eat something like ayam penyet. smile.gif Check out Leko Leko in the Curve if you want fresh spicy sambal, they can make the spicy level as per your order from low to very spicy.

Before one decide where is the best nasi lemak, needs to define what constitutes a good nasi lemak e.g rice should be cooked with Thai fragant rice, fluffy, flavourful, could be eaten on it's own, etc.

If you happened to swing by Temerloh, please go and try Nasi Lemak Azhar.
I've tried almost all Nasi Lemak in KL (Bumbung, Kg Baru, Warung Rindu, etc etc) yet I think nothing can beat the taste of this Nasi Lemak Azhar.

It's a bit of a waste to use fragrant rice (beras wangi) for nasi lemak as the fragrance of the rice is lost since a nasi lemak dish is mainly counting on its sambal and the coconut santan on the rice. Also, the sticky type of fragrant rice is not suitable for nasi lemak. Only the not-so-sticky type of fragrant rice is suitable. Fragrant rice is only good when taken with normal dishes, or when used for chicken rice.

The normal (cheap) rice and beras hancur is surely more suitable for nasi lemak than fragrant rice. It's not to say that one cannot use fragrant rice for nasi lemak. It's just that for the high price of Grade AAA fragrant rice, it's a waste since the smell of the fragrant rice will be lost since the nasi lemak is mostly enjoyed for its sambal and santan on the rice which will cover/eliminate all the smell of the fragrant rice.

Nasi lemak is constituted from rice, sambal, ikan bilis, etc. each component should be excellent by itself for the whole combination to be excellent.

For reasons, cheap ingredients and poorly prepared dish need chilli sauce, gravy, spicy sauce or tomato ketchup.

Not sure the point you are making here. I am aware of the fact that every ingredient needs to be good as it's a combination as a whole, so that the dish will come up good. The point I am making here is the type of rice, that is Beras Wangi vs Beras normal. I'm not saying to use cheap or lousy rice with Beras normal but the point is the normal rice is cheaper than Beras Wangi. Beras Wangi has many types and brands, and some Beras Wangi tastes like Beras normal without the fragrance and stickiness of Beras Wangi.

For Nasi Lemak, the rice cannot be too sticky and that's the reason why Beras Wangi is not suitable. Most brands of Beras Wangi is sticky, almost like glutinous rice. The rice is not separated individually. But for some Beras Wangi, it is not so sticky and separated, so it's almost the same as the normal rice although it is claimed to be Beras Wangi with higher price.

Back to the point - i think you have mistaken my post in assuming that using cheap ingredients to make Nasi lemak. I am only talking about the rice and not the ingredients. Although I am only focusing on the rice, I am comparing between Beras Wangi and the normal rice, not cheap vs expensive. It's a known fact that normal rice is cheaper than Beras Wangi but that does not suggest that using the normal rice is using cheap ingredients.

At one time, Malaysian airlines nasi lemak was among the best and the pride of the country, the reason was they were using Thai Jasmine rice.

Jasmine rice could be fluffy with correct amount of water.

The only nasi lemak I had in Kuantan 15 years (or more) was at food court. I cant remember the name but Im sure most would know. RM10 (or so back then) for one whole leg (or just leg), one sotong, telur and side dish I think. My friends keep recomendding saying its worth but RM10 back then was quite a lot to pay for nasi lemak. Personally I think its too much... sometimes struggled to finish the drink after eating.
