Yes am signed up for google play services beta program.

The ads are not overly annoying for now so I’ll just leave it be.
*
That is another reason why you are getting the new UI..

Anyone of you having problems with plex?
I'm getting stuttering playing 4k videos from plex.
*
I can't remember where i read this, there were some users getting better results using Just Player to play 4K Remux videos.
If this improve your experience, you can use Kodi as media manager and configure it to use Just Player as external player.

Clarification: Just Player is an open source application that use android's exoplayer and able to play DV(MKV, MP4) with HD audio
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?....brouken.player

There was another tip by tweaking the total number of background app but this will reset after each reboot so it is not a permanent solution.

QUOTE(cstan61 @ Oct 20 2021, 05:50 PM)
The Tube has 2GB/8GB of Ram/Storage vs 3GB/16GB in the Pro version. That difference is the cause of the 4K stuttering problem.

However, you may want to try your luck signing up to join Nvidia Shield beta program. I believe they are currently beta testing Android TV 11.

[Link to Nvidia Shield Forum Beta Signup]
*
The beta program has been closed since few months back.
For us in Malaysia, it is not recommended to join the beta program especially if only have one Shield TV.
The beta will have bunch of bugs and users need to actively provide feedback to Nvidia support. In some case they will require your Shield TV for futher debugging.

Regarding to the stuttering issue, not just RAM but there's something 'else'.
Nvidia is too quiet about this issue.

Plex is an application that basically creates your own mini Netflix style library using your own files. It's not actually a player.

Edit:
I think you misunderstood the 'Kodi with Just Player' part.
Actually, those are application not hardware.

Just know that the launcher is still very new, there are still some annoying bugs like pressing back may not exit an app or if you force shutdown an app, it may actually close the entire launcher itself. Just small niggly things, doesn't always happen but yeah otherwise it's an amazing no bs, no frills, clean launcher.
*
This was among one of the reason why i stop using the launcher..😄

The launcher is really good but since the developer is doing this alone and only when he is free so bug fix and improvement will take time.

Plex has an official Kodi plugin.

While Plex allows the app to trigger an external player, you will loose the ability to keep track of what you are playing, which is why people use Plex in the first place. So people either use the built in Plex player (also based on Exo Player).

I can't find the external player option on Android TV app or any article mentioning that feature available on Android TV app.
It seems that for Android the feature is only available on mobile app.

For tracking watch history, there is Trakt or SimKl. It is available on most media player app.
On Kodi with external player, there is one downside that it won't have scrobbler(resume point) feature if video is stopped half way but it will mark the video as watched.(i assume this is what you meant)

QUOTE
The issue is that Plex's native player usually have issues with subtitles that are not srt, and would try to "burn" in the subtitle into the video, hence some people who wants to avoid this live transcoding issue would use Plex for Kodi, since Kodi has better subttitle support, especially if you are watching animes
*
Actually at this part i'm a bit confused because the discussion is going to different issue..😅
..and yeah the Plex subtitles transcoding issue is well known and annoying.
Unless this is what you suspect @Drian is experiencing?

Fyi, each media player that use Exoplayer are not the 'same'. There are forked version from Google's version.
Each developer will do their own optimization to be integrate into their apps.

This is why in my reply to @Drian, i suggested to try Just Player.
If it worked then he can try to use Kodi+Just Player and can sync with Trakt/SimKL but without scrobbler feature.

It's not perfect and in this case need to sacrifice something to gain something.
Better solution would be get Shield TV Pro if possible.

There are two Kodi add-ons for Plex, right? IIRC, they operate differently.

One is the official Plex add-on at https://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Plex.

The other is PlexKodiConnect, at https://github.com/croneter/PlexKodiConnect.

I'm using the 2nd one currently.
*
Yup, there's explanation on PKC's FAQ:
https://github.com/croneter/PlexKodiConnect...l-plex-for-kodi

..and there is Composite addon which is basic.

If any of you experience audio dropout on Kodi with high bitrate TrueHD/Atmos, the issue has been fix.
Refer: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/20339

The patch is available in Kodi's test build with 'fix-TrueHD-Matrix' label:
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/test-builds/android/
If everything goes well, the fix will be available in official Kodi 19.3 build.

The fix is also available in Maven's latest build:
https://www.kodinerds.net/index.php/Thread/...C3%BCr-Android/

As these are unofficial releases, wouldn't they be buggy and may in some cases brick our hardware?
*
This are test build based on stable version with specific fix by Team Kodi.
In this case it has only one changes(fix) related to audio dropout.

No, this won't brick your device because this is app not firmware.
It doesn't affect kernel or system files.

The Maven's Build is unofficial build with additional features(DV-MKV & BD-J) that Team Kodi can't or not interested to add it into the official Kodi build but still it won't brick the device.

BD-J is to play bluray iso file? cos i downloaded spears munsil BD file but seems hard to open at shield TV tube lol.
*
Not exactly. BD-J is the Blu-ray Disc Java which contains Blu-Ray Menu that requires JRE to read it. Also referred as "Full Blu-ray Menu".
Official Kodi can play Blu-ray ISO but without the full menu means that it will directly go to the video and iirc this need some tweaking at Kodi settings first.

With Maven's build, it will able to launch Full Blu-ray Menu just like playing it on Blu-Ray player thanks to JRE addon and modification done by Fandangos.

In your case, the Spears & Munsil ISO contains BD-J Menu and Maven's build will able to show full menu.
The ISO file will have 'BDJO' folder or files with '.bdjo' extension.

I have shared demo previously with Fandangos build, can refer here:
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...ost&p=100510473

Fyi, the Fandangos build is no longer updated so better to use Maven's build.

Some info on Kodi development for Android, since past one or two years there's no official Kodi Android maintainer so any bug related to Kodi for Android will take time to fix depends on Team Kodi availability or until community members submit the fix.
They also have started to remove hacks/workarounds for specific SoC staring Kodi 19(or 18.5). Now everything depends on how well is the device firmware.

Spotted this comment by Team Kodi member on Shield Tube RAM issue..😅

That 2GB RAM is really 'killing' the device..😄

Btw, Kodi 19.3 is out with the high bitrate TrueHD/Atmos fix but they missed the micro stuttering fix. Might available in Kodi 19.4 at the end of next month.

The micro stuttering problem on DV MKV only right? No?
*
No, this is for all type of video(except DV MKV) that has stuttering issue on official Kodi(Android) build.
Currently they are testing this with official Kodi test build but based on feedback it still need improvement and once this is fixed, they might focus on DV.
You can follow the discussion here: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=365127

Iinm, Maven's build has been updated with this fix.

Hi guys. I know this is a thread on Shield TV (which I have and have no issue with, except for the faulty remote control after less than a year) but I hope u guys can help me out on my MeCool KM3 android box.

It seems that the KM3 doesn't not support Dolby Vision? When I tried playing a DV (4k as well) movie
on Disney+Hotstar thru the KM3 with DV enabled in the Settings of KM3, the file won't play (the rotating sign will go on and on). When I turned off DV, all the DV movies on D+H would play but the colours are messed up. Pls see the attached 2 photos (Jungle Cruise).

When I play a 4K movie without DV on D+H, the colours are normal. Pls see the attached photo (Cruella).

Any idea if this issue is purely because the KM3 doesn't support DV? If do, any way to overcome it?

If that is the case and there is no way around the problem, any suggestions of a good (above entry level) android box which supports DV, HDR10, etc? Worst case I guess will get another Shield, but thinking or trying out something else.

Thanks in advance!
*
Mecool KM3 do not support DV.

Your options are:
1. Chromecast with Google TV
2. TiVo 4K

..or Firestick 4K (FireOS)

..but if you need TrueHD, then Shield TV 2019.

Shit still no refresh rate matching
*
Fyi, Shield TV support frame rate matching since 2015 and that's how Kodi, VLC, Nova Player & other apps that support the Frame Rate API able to 'switch' refresh rate on supported display.

If you're referring to Android TV 12's frame rate match then it is very similar to what Shield TV already does now and it still won't force auto frame rate matching because it will require app developers to add the feature into their app first.

NVIDIA has the capability to force auto frame rate matching on system level on Shield TV but due to Netflix certification requirements they can't implement it. This the reason why NVIDIA's Match Frame Rate feature will remain in 'beta'.

To overcome this issues, someone develop an app called Refresh Rate for Shield TV that does AFR based on source info on some unsupported app like Chromecast, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime & etc but of course it is not perfect/stable.

Ya problem with netflix only.. the beta app is so buggy tat i turn it off. It will keep flicker sometimes.

Nvidia could have talked to big streaming company like netflix and help them to implement. But seems like too big to even care about it?
*
Actually they did lobby Netflix and other video streaming provide to add the feature but in the end it still up to them.
Older version of Netflix branch had the feature but Netflix removed it after they keep receiving complains from their subscribers on the temporary black screen during frame rate matching
Maybe with QMS and ATV12 frame rate support, they might reconsider their decision.

QUOTE(topeng perak @ Jan 10 2022, 11:00 AM)
Haiz..still no Youtube HDR. Wish that they able to enable it at software/firmare level.
*
Google use VP9 Profile 2 codec for HDR video on their streaming apps(YouTube, Google TV, Stadia) which Tegra X1/X1+ does not support at hardware level but NVIDIA did try to enable it at software level with Android 9.0 but it was only stable up to 720p or 1080p25 and start to lag at 1080p60 so they had to abandoned the plan.
In May/June 2020, Google did enabled HDR on YouTube Android TV app and later disabled it for all Shield TV devices after request from NVIDIA due to bad performance.

Thanks to Google's new AV1 requirement on newer ATV/GTV device, NVIDIA now will need to design new SoC with AV1 capability unless they found a way to add it externally to Tegra X1+. Of course there's been rumors of NVIDIA ending Tegra chip production and new chip development for Nintendo but unsure if it is still by NVIDIA.

_____________________

Sharing some info on other development:

1. One Shield TV Tube user decided to flash the 'leaked' recovery image of SE 9.0 and reported improvement on high bitrate video playback on Plex.

2. DV in MKV patch has been merge into FFmpeg master branch and will be available in FFmpeg 5.0 if no issue found but no timeline for final release. This means that Kodi 20(Nexus) will able to play DV in MKV if Team Kodi decide to update their FFmpeg to 5.0 with necessary changes.
For now, not sure if they will backport it to Kodi 19.

Can I ask for Shield TV and Pro, only pro came with Plex player. If we install Plex ourself on the Shield TV, will that strain the hardware?
*
Are you referring to the client or server app.

Plex Media Player (client) is available on all Shield TV model while Plex Media Server is only available on Shield TV 2015(All)/2017(All)/2019(only the Pro model)

No issue using Shield TV as Plex player but for Plex Server it's not that powerful.

..but still will recommend to go for the Pro model for that extra 1GB RAM so you can avoid any future headaches/limitations which will be caused by lack of RAM. Other than that, 60fps upscaling and having USB inputs is a plus.

Recently my Shield TV Tube kept love to auto instant wake up when i sleep it off (Press power button once)

The behavior getting more annoyed cause i got CEC to my TV.
When i pressed power button to make it sleep ,  my TV will also turn off.
Then next second, my TV screen self on and Shield TV screen display out.
Need to restart my Shield TV to solve this issue once happen.
*
1. Check what cause Shield TV to auto wake up at:
settings>device preference>about>status>up time

2. What TV model & is it directly connected to Shield TV or via AVR/Soundbar?
When the TV ON, does the Shield TV's green led turned ON too?

Do a full power cycle on all device that are connected via HDMI to your TV and Shield TV.

There is CEC issue but mostly happen to selected brand like TCL, Vizio, LG & Samsung. IIRC, NVIDIA mentioned something about tweaking current CEC settings in their future update.

My setup is Nvidia Shield TV (Tube) & Apple TV direct connect to Sound bar (Samsung Q950T) and soundbar eArc/Arc back to LG CX.
Apple TV doesnt have this issue (only boot up takes time for TV to recognise the boot up input)

If the issue is still there after SE 9.0 then do report to NVIDIA.

The IR battery drain issue was due to the remote keep emitting IR signal non stop even when not in use and it was fixed later via firmware update for the remote. Iinm, latest Shield 2019 remote firmware version is v1.12.
Does this still happen to your remote when you setup IR? You can check with your phone camera.
Did you ever reset your remote?

There's setting to prevent shield tv to sleep when there is audio playing, check at under the settings>device preference>screensaver>Stay Awake on Music
