Hi Mazda 3 liftback owners , I'm planning to buy one soon and can you tell me what are the known issues for this car?
not specific to the BP liftback, but i am a BM version owner, since the powertrain is the same :
1) change your spark plug around 70k or 80k mileage, even if it is iridium, probably near or around 4 years mark (even iridium purported to last 120k or higher mileage, can feel the difference in response; the high compression nature of this engine seems to be able to break the plug seals, can see burn marks on the top white ceramic part...not sure whether the piston revision of the newer engine batches indirectly solve this, my BM is the old old first CKD generation)
2) also around that mileage or 4 years, check the top cover for possible oil spotting or leaks, need to change the rubber gasket (less than RM200 job including ori parts, can request added RTV sealant from the mechanic)
3) rear pads wear much faster than the front (you'll find this odd if you're from other local or japan car makes, i worn off 3 rear pads before i changed the front one)
4) not an issue per se, but the brake can feel "squishy" at initial half travel. It is not that the brake doesn't have enough power, the brake force is adequate when you really hit the pedal down further, but you'll need practice to familiarise with the bite pattern or else you'll have multiple close calls/scares/minor bumps in the early years of ownership
5) the q85 batteries dies fast (my experience all less than 2 years no matter which brand, until i gave up buying q85 and just get regular MF, i don't mind turning the istop off everytime i start the car)
6) use fully synthetic oil (not sure whether need to top up extra cash from the regular free service coupons nowadays), the fuel dilution for this engine is quite apparent if you're city driving a lot
7) once warranty over, go do a transmission fluid change with new transmission filters....don't believe their crap that says it is "lifetime" fluid
8) one of the main engine mounting is fluid based (the big black round one), change it when you reach 100k mileage mark, or else half of your engine bay will be a mess with that mounting fluid squirting when the rubber rips from deterioration (i kena, colour looks like yellow mud, initially mistaken it as splashes from mud on the road) (just change the top 2 piece, the bottom piece is pretty solid and can last 10 years easily, i checked the condition when i did mine and the mechanic says the condition almost as good as the new replacement)
9) replace the front lower arm and tie rods after 100k, makes a hell lot of difference to regain the tightness of handling
hope this platform solved the nyek nyek sound from the front suspension that plagued the initial models of the skyactiv range....
