what did you use for joinery?
can share more internal pictures of the frame, sliders, drawer box

I have always been intrigued by joinery techniques but never had the time. And do not have the time/resources/supply to deal with solid wood, although i wish i do.

I only deal with engineered/manufactured wood saja pakai, ply, chip, mdf...sad

frame is black chipboard, bottom mount sliders

the top surface is using 18-20mm white oak, with side removable panels using Dnut and m6 bolts+screws from the back.

erm, ikea joinery for the internal shelves? those would be flat pack connectors.
we dont use those for the carcass. every thing build to become one row solid carcass.
you need to cos packing it full with records its super heavy, u need it to be rock solid

Attached Image

all the wooden panels are using solid white oak with antique dark stain finish.

no probblem to make it out of entire solid wood, but we need to work on a given modest RM budget.
original solid oak item seen on etsy/pinterest was around 4-5k usd , although made here, the cost would still hit 5figure rm mark if made from solid oak.

its commercial joinery, enables assembly and disassembly. The usage of D-Nut, is it because of the chipboard material that you are using as the carcass? Since chipboard cannot be joined reliably with normal wood technique.

I still have a Question, why din user cheaper local solid wood, rather pakai melamine chipboard?

And ya, IKEA furniture, you get what you paid for, that picture. But Etsy/Pinterest orang putih punya wood work, mahal at labor. Ad from pakistan/bangla murah, haha! J/k

Dnut was used to join the white oak panels to the carcass on site.
why should i use any ikea style connector or dnut on building carcass frame itself?
its not made as flat pack design. cos i already mention the concern above why it wasnt built as flat packed.

as for being orang puteh or not, even if i paid local or banggla to join the white oak into panels and do proper dark staining, you think most of them can do it?
if they can, then they wont be cutting panels from Fingerjoint rubberwood. lets just say maybe 10% or less of the local cabinet makers can joint hard solid wood (directly using rough sawn timber).
maybe soft pine wood they can la. since they can stretch and squeeze the soft pine to form a tight glue line using their clamps, as for nyatoh, yea perhaps they can too, cos its mostly s4s planed already from the shop. its usually not rough sawn nyatoh.

last question:

matter of preference vs time frame vs budget. we can build both ways.

Cant find much info on D Nut. I thought you said D Nut for carcass. Re read your ayat again, D Nut for top? I need to explore D Nut, i do see them a lot at my suppliers.

So what did you use for your chipboard edge? I'm on the 1+mm ABS edge banding, using contact cement, then trim using flush bit router...and I hate every moment of it. Any other solution other than commerial hot glue edge banding machine?

Cant find much resources sbb most other ppl in the world either use those iron on or speedtape, but their edge band is thin, boleh potong pakai pisau. Those are PVC edgebanding.

chipboard you need panel saw with pre-score blade. no way you can get neat cuts using just a table saw.

as for banding

moved on to commercial hot glue machines, cant replace the speed and neatness of things. not to mention the strength of hot glue on thicker material like abs. once its neatly stuck on the chipboard...can just use a trim router with trim base (got one handle) and push it across all the edges

Hi , nice question biggrin.gif

To me, there has alot of great and durable wood in here Malaysia, but then, still have no company to get use of it. I believe, if someone can bring up this culture, it has a very potential market in Global.

Since wood, are always a great accompaniment for human, we use it to create wonderful world before today rclxms.gif

Agreed on your statement, at the end, it is all about labour cost. Which will greatly impact end user buying price than the cost of the wood alone.

Solid wood like i am selling (Balau or Chengal) , need more time and man power to make it perfect finish. And there is lot of challenge to make use of it, it is not easy to join, and bend. You will need to settle the problem cause by improper drying or storing location, then, you will need to settle the cracking problem which cause by natural life effect, then come to each wood from different jungle will have different side effect during working.

Like log come from Kelantan will have some oil coming out (Chengal) , but from Perak it has no such problem, but it cracked easily.

This is all the thing they facing before you see a very beautiful furniture in shopping centre.

I has a customer who recently brought a Balau Slab from me to make a table, he send to Kuantan for further finishing job, the table is 5"x40"x10 feet, the cost until it look like a "real beautiful" table in 5star hotel is RM9000.

agree 1000%
alot of behind the scene processing of the raw wood before they look like those 10-20k table tops.
