So far in game ranking (90%) & metacritic (93%) is the highest ranking for a pc game this year. (X box 360 & PS3 got their GTA 4 & MGS).
Apparently reviewer founds that the flaws have been overshadowed by the game's innovation & ambition.
The only big 3 absentee review is from gamespot (few more days later, since they just review RA3).
For those still attacking the game rating please play the game first b4 review your comments (a fact outnumbers a hundred rumours)
Grab a pirated copy if you must.
But don't be misled by those F3 gameplay video you see in shops (caution note)

Sigh, another "play the game first" guy. Haven't we beaten that strawman enough now? Dude, do yourself a favor - read back at this thread.

I was just wondering if fallout 3 can be that bad what good games you can recommend me this year emm. Just a few bad eggs inside the game doesn't make the games s*** overall. I don't think many games can equal that proportion of F3 whether in production value or amount of detail thrown in. Those whom only know how to give bad reviews without balancing the good ones are considered without a "holistic" view who focus only on minor issues.
I think what the 1up review quotes the best line :
The review concluded that despite the game's shortcomings, Fallout 3 is a "hugely ambitious game that doesn't come around very often," and one would "be a fool not to play it and enjoy the hell out of it".

If you really dislike F3 you can wait for another unknown years for Fallout MMO while 99% gamer of the world are playing the fallout 3. Fallout 4 will come out after 3 years (by bethesda). Constructive criticsm is healthy but overboard is unethical.

I guess you don't really understand what really made fallout shine is completely different than what made oblivion shine (to their fans)? They are different genres - Oblivion tries to impose immersion on the player while fallout tries to stay true to its PnP roots. Both have different aims and what Bethesda is doing is taking all that fallout stands for, rip it apart, take the artwork and universe and slapped it onto a thinly disguised Oblivion. To call it Oblivion with guns is extremely accurate.

I'm playing Oblivion right now and I can tell you how much it sucks as a RPG. The plethora of bugs and "immersion" breakers are everywhere. I seriously don't get the FPS + RPG part - not that it's undoable, but rather in Beth's case of FO3 it's horribly implemented, judging from the gameplay footage.

Had they called it Oblivion Apocalypse or Fallout: East Coast, I wouldn't be that pissed off. That's like taking Hellgate: London and then renaming it to Diablo 3. See how the Diable 3 fans react.

Seriously, I would rather the fallout franchise stop at Fallout 2 and being remembered as a cult classic instead of being butchered by Bethsoft in a lame excuse to extend the series and milk the franchise dry of cash.

Like I said, how many times does one need to get f***ed in the arse to realize they're sodomized?

And the thing about constructive criticism is, Beth's not listening. They never do. Look what happened to Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion. Enough evidences yet?

Just to say about the high reviews, journalism in video games isn't really at a good standard. People can be bought out. I remember some dude saying Kane and Lynch was shit on like...Gamespot I think, and he was fired soon after because Eidos complained.

So yeah. Not saying all reviewers and reviews are like that, but just be wary.

I personally ignore the scores and just read the thing and look out for concrete things. Less of "It feels like you're in an apocalyptic world" and more of the "The combat system uses a combination of AP, hit percentages and..." parts.

The game was only released yesterday and there are already a few bug videos appearing on You Tube and Gametrailers.

SPOILER ALERT...apparently F3's main storyline can be broken prematurely according to someone at F3 forum. It brought the player pretty close to the ending. Woot, now I can do speedruns...

I understand the original Black isle studio fallout series fans concerns.
However one needs to understand that the pre 2000 era was all about RPG games (especially D & D)
However as time move on less & less RPG games was being developed as you need the very best team to develop it.
The ratios of games like FPS, RTS has outnumber RPG games greatly (that also apply to game developer as well)

If i am not mistaken there are only 1 good RPG released every year :
2007 : Witcher
2006 : Neverwinter nights 2 & Oblivion.

Well bcos of the fact that making MMO was far more profitable many developers are moving to that direction (WOW, Warhammer, LOTRO).
I understand that it should not named Fallout 3 but even the original fallout 3 was supposed to be called Van buren. However since i have not played the game yet i should be objective in giving my opinion.

Just got news from TSB that Fallout 3 has been delayed for SEA until Nov 13. Just when I placed my order yesterday :/

I don't know what stunts ms is trying to pull (what, competing with WOTLK?) but what a brilliant way to curb piracy!! doh.gif

The review from gamespot finally comes in with another 90.
I think bcos SEA will be released late since they developed & publish the game together unlike in the past relying on 3rd party publisher (2k games)
If publisher likes EA & ubisoft moves in the games will be released faster. (Maybe bethesda wants to reap all the profits themselves)

Firstly, "Van Buren" is a codename for the abandoned Fallout 3 project, just like V13 is the project codename for Fallout Online. If it was released, it will still be called Fallout 3.

Secondly, FPS and RTS had always outnumbered RPG games since 10 years ago. Fallout was released in 1997, and guess what FPS and RTS were released in the same year? Quake 2. Total Annihilation. Dungeon Keeper. Blood. Tomb Raider 2. And a whole lot. Not to mention the starcraft craze at that time, as well as die hard Quake, Doom and Duke Nukem players from before. You can't say that because FPS and RTS outnumbers RPG developers would have to turn RPGs into FPS just to please the masses.

That's like saying because more people drive sports cars than ride a sports bike that the manufacturers should turn sports bikes into the shape of cars too.

The reason why so little good RPGs are released nowadays is because RPGs are always a niche market - something that not many could appreciate due to widespread ADD plague (attention deficit disorder), or more suitably known as the "lack of attention to read any text at all". This means developers would have to develop games for people who are intelligently bankrupt and incapable of sitting down and actually immersing themselves in a make believe world with a make believe character, thus causing the massive exodus from traditional story and plot-heavy RPGs to Action RPGs (and then to MMORPGS for the social factor).

Isometric could work for Fallout 3. Or rather, a 3rd person view could work wonderfully for fallout. Heck, Bethesda got the artwork right. If only they put the camera up higher in the sky rather than FPS and using a real-time-with-pause mechanism PLUS a turn-based alternative combat ALA Fallout Tactics, that would appease a lot of die hard fallout fans. But they still need to hire proper voice actors, animators and writers. Beth sucks at those departments.

I dont trust reviews these day as most of them just over look all the bad bits of a game and praise the good parts as if it's god sent or something.

I rather go to forums and read about people's comment.

Game review sites are untrustable these days.

Go read the RA3 review in Games Radar.Ridiculous review.

Well, I don't even read game reviews either, but a lot of people hype games up according to review scores, which are ridiculously skewed.

In terms of other great RPGs, everyone should check out more indy stuff. Eschalon Book 1 is pretty dope. Arcanum 5 and Geneforge 4...Gorki 17 is brutal.
