It was 8 months ago when my son, our only child diagnosed with autism. We went on a roll searching high and low for solutions on how to help our child navigate through our world that appears so difficult for him to even bear.

8 months onwards, almost 3 year old, he is now aware who is mommy and daddy is, and despite still non-verbal, he shows his love by kissing us, giving us noserubs, and forehead knocks smile.gif

Here is why our son is secretly our superhero:

Hi guys, I need some advice here regarding my child. My son is currently 9 months old. He have the following behaviour

1. Finger flap occasionally
2. Does not respond to us when we call his name out. But when he is not in focus on his toys, he will respond to us when we call his name out.
3. Doesn't look at us in the eyes sometimes
4. Does giggles when making funny face to him.

Should I be worried that he might have the autism?

I talked to my paed, he said can't check now. Hv to wait till he is one years old..

Word of advise for those who want to check their children for asd, you can get professional diagnosis from your local government hospital. For free..

Yes. That's right. All you have to do is follow proper procedure.

Firstly, please bring your kid to your local KK. Hopefully, you have visited KK during your pregnancy and have your buku merah.

Let them know you are concern about asd. They will conduct initial assessment and if unable to determine, they will refer your case further to a government hospital to seek the specialist. They will write a letter of recommendation.

You take this letter of recommendation to the hospital. After registration, they will book you a date to see the doctor, and child psychologist. It is usually a 6 months waiting time.

If you are in no real hurry, i recommend you wait. It is worth your time and saves you alot of money.

So once that time comes, they will assess your kid and give you the result within a week. Asd has 3 levels. Level 1 is requiring minimal assistance. Level 2 is requiring substantial assistance & finally level 3 is serious case and probably need medication and substantial assistance to reduce effects of asd.

After assessment, you can take the report to an OT and ST of your choice and they will begin therapy for your kid. This also saves you another round of expensive assessments.

Standard OT rates are rm100 per visit. And ST rates are 200rm. Budget accordingly. More visits the better.

There will also be routine half yearly follow ups at hospital with the specialist too. Government hospital also has frequent talks about asd and i highly recommend you attend. You wont have to bring your asd kid.

Remember, to treat your asd kid normally and usually, even level 3 can drop to level 1 with proper intervention and professional therapy and parental guidance.

My son is almost 3 and demonstrated everything you listed and more since he was below 1. It's actually autism stim which we should not be stopping as it is merely a self regulatory behavior against the overwhelming sensory perceived in their surrrounding. I wrote a full list of early autism signs that my son demonstrated in link below: https://auroraautism.com/very-early-autism-...low-1-year-old/

Additionally, here's why we should not stop their repetitive movements if you're interested: https://auroraautism.com/the-autism-stim-is-real/

You may need to wait until 2 years old to really get your child properl diagnosed, but mean time, here's what you can do:

1. ban all screen time (any device at all, including TV)
2. expose your son to alot of outdoors sensory activities like seaside, sand, swimming, grass, etc
3. if you child's stool is frequently soft, see specialist to check whether there's a diet (leaky gut) issue which affects child's attention at that age. If so, gluten free/casein free diet may be recommended to you.

Hope these tips can help significantly reduce your child's symptoms in the coming 6 months or so! Be positive and take action - every second matters. Best of luck! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

it's been awhile updating here.
my Son is already 9 years old and he is just like any other normal kids.

but sometimes he has his OCD on food.

Stopped therapy since March 2020 MCO and that was such a relief financially, and its a blessing in disguise for us to stop his therapy at that time as his development improves overtime.

so from about 2-6 yo, we spent almost 50k (rough estimation) including travelling Kedah to penang every week etc.

Have an autistic son who is now 7 year old.

Was diagnosed back when he was 3. Typical symptoms e.g. no verbal communication/eye-contact/obsession with symbols.

He started to speak at 6. Speaking is a skill he has to consciously learn, unlike normal kids. At 7, our biggest concern is his emotional outburst (which began go manifest some months after 6 y.o.).

Don't forget to register him/her as an OKU (kategori: masalah pembelajaran)

By doing that, you are one step ahead (redha dan pasrah dengan keunikan anak yg begini)...

Kudos and salute to parents yg sabar melayan dan membesarkan anak istimewa sebegini
