While I am doing key in data for my company website, this question come to me.. which had asked many of them, there is no proper instruction what to do... to key in for First Name and Last Name. When full name is given

Muslim name - Zarina Binti Ahmad
First Name : Zarina
Last Name: Binti Ahmad
*Do we need to include "Binti" or "Bin" in the last name as well?

Indian name = Thulasi a/p Gunasekaran
First Name : Thulasi
Last Name: a/p Gunasekaran
*Do we need to include "a/l" or "a/p" in the last name as well?

Chinese Name = Tan Kok Yee
First Name: Kok Yee
Last Name: Tan
*Need to remember last name is meant for Family name

Chinese Name combined with western name = Alan Tan Kok Yee
Need your suggestion which option is correct?
Option 1
First Name: Kok Yee
Last Name: Alan Tan
*Don't make sense where Alan is name family name, why put at the last name coloum

Option 2
First Name: Alan, Kok Yee / Kok Yee, Alan
Last Name: Tan
*but very weird..


Need your opinion especially for Chinese name that added with western name...

You are doing all wrong for chinese name.

If in malaysia and singapore yes.

Internationally u have to do like this:

Full name: alan tan kok yee

First name: alan
Last name: tan kok yee

You will get a lot of headaches and rejections if u use ur malaysia method in international western countries.

I have had different western bank in different countries reject my withdrawal because i follow melaysia standerd.

Internationally if someone Full Name is only -- TAN KOK YEE ?

Different countries, different cultures, different practices.

First name = given name by the parent
Last name = family name/father name

Japanese, Korean & Chinese have their family name on the front, ie: Uzumaki Naruto, Lee Kwang Soo & Lee Chong Wei

Western & Muslim name have last name on the back, ie Aegon Targaryen & Ali bin Abu.

About Indians I'm not sure because in India they dont have a/l or a/p

First name: Alan Kok Yee
Last name: Tan

That's how it should be done, if there's middle name field, you can put the chinese name in middle name instead,
First name: Alan
Middle name: Kok Yee
Last name: Tan

If the field is just full name, you can arrange same way as your identification (passport usually for international) and underline your surname:
ALAN TAN KOK YEE

Yup this is correct, that's how my peers and I do it when filling official forms, registering for uni etc in Australia. Last name usually corresponds to Family Name (TAN), although family name /surname would be a better unambiguous choice of terminology

I tot last name... must be family name?!!
At least I do it as your way too.. but my boss insisted me to make Last name as family Name.. he told me internationally is like that

i lived in usa for 25 years.. so used to first name, last name basis..

so, ali bin muhammad. = muhammad ali.. last name written first..

updated the names for you.

if a/l, a/p, bin, binti is in your ic or passport you need to include it in formal documents.

not formal ones you can skip it.
Not formal, you can and drop Kok Yee as well.

First Name: Alan
Last Name: Tan

not many forms got middle name options.

Some forms instead of first name, last name they put first name, surname to take in consideration of multicultural naming convention.

I don't have banks in different countries, but I'm sure you are wrong on that account.

Last Name = surname, or family name
Ali should be your first name

For Chinese - Tan Ah Kow becomes Ah Kow Tan or Tan, Ah Kow

In the case of Muhammad Ali, Muhammad is his firstname and Ali is his surname.
His daughter's name is Laila Ali (notice it's not rearranged Ali binti Laila), he doesn't follow the Malay version where there is father's name instead of surname.

Aren'y you worried about the naming trend in current generation? Muslim children having 4 words as first name, and most of their parents first name have 3 words?
By the way, what will happen if someone don't use their father name, but use their mother name instead? This is valid in Muslim and Malaysian case.

AFAIK for Malay names, last name is your father's name...

first name always = name given by parents
Last name = Surname

I deal with many foreign bank, and i can confirm your format is incorrect mate.

So in you format:

First name: alan kok yee
Last name tan

When printed in single line becomes : alan kok yee tan.

Now when u wanna cash a check explain how u gonna do it cox check now is alan kok yee tan?

Based on real life scenario and experience dealing with banks in the us of and european countries. They dont take what u learn in asian school and culture and apply to their banking culture. U try explaining ur culture in the bank they will just say u sohai and ask u correct it.

In asia is self understood if western. No. Either u follow format or reject. Ur choice.
