not surprised. SEALs and US SF ("Green Berets") also have reported similar clashes on exercises before. probably won't affect battlefield performance lah.

Incoming!

Playing an important role in the last-mile defence against aerial threats is the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s RBS 70 missile system.

With the ability to be mounted on the V200 Armoured Fighting Vehicle, or dismounted and man-packed for operations, each RBS 70 fire unit moves with ease and speed to provide low-level air defence for ground forces.

See how this missile system supports the Singapore Army in Exercise Wallaby 2017, held in Shoalwater Bay Training Area, Queensland, Australia.

Clashes, tear gas & burning tires: Rally in Bethlehem following Trump's Jerusalem move

Clashes are taking place between demonstrators and police in Bethlehem following the decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

NATO - Sweden Large Scale Exercise Aurora 2017

In Sep 2017, Sweden hosted Exercise Aurora, its largest military exercise in nearly 25 years. The exercise involved nearly 30% of the Swedish Armed Forces, as well as troop contributions from NATO Allied and partner countries - which joined on a bilateral basis. The goal of the exercise was to build a stronger defence and increase capability to face an attack. As well as taking place in Stockholm and Gothenburg regions, the exercise featured air, land and sea assets on the island of Gotland and in the Stockholm archipelago. Aurora also featured collaboration between the military and the civilian emergency services. Footage includes various shots of exercise Aurora in locations across Sweden.

Exercise Forging Sabre: What it takes to be a Singaporean sniper

user posted image

PHOENIX: At first, it was just no photos.

A day before I travelled deep into the Arizona desert to meet a bunch of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Commandos and try firing one of their sniper rifles, I was told no interviews too.

I knew they were an elite force, so when a group of reporters including myself got the chance to get up close and personal, there certainly was some level of anticipation. The restricted access added to the intrigue.

The sniper rifle-wielding Commandos – I was carefully told not to call them snipers – were participating in Exercise Forging Sabre, held in Arizona this week. These Commandos were only a small component of the exercise, tasked with completing ambush missions.

The journey to where they were stationed did not disappoint. I loaded up into a large Chevvy SUV, driven by army maintenance personnel, and was taken into some of the emptiest stretches of land I have ever witnessed.

There were no paved roads, just sandy trails pockmarked with potholes where the sand gave way. Seatbelts please, I was warned. The SUV rocked and tilted, but there was no motion sickness, because the views were stunning: Rocky hills gently rising against endless ribbons of clear, blue skies.

My destination was the top of a rather steep hill, but the gradient was no match for the powerful SUV. The driver threw the vehicle into low gear and it lurched up the hill, winding around it for more gorgeous 360-degree scenery.

user posted image

The Commandos were already waiting when I arrived at a makeshift car park on the summit, and the one who was going to conduct the briefing especially looked the part.

His chest muscles and biceps bulged against his Number 4 fatigue. The left chest was adorned with airborne, freefall and combat diving badges. On the left sleeve: the Ranger and Special Forces tabs. Basically, he was a walking signboard that read: “Don’t mess with me".

The Commando spoke in short, sharp sentences about the two long-range rifles we were going to try out: the Knight's Armament M110 and Sako TRG-22.

The M110, an American make, can fire off multiple rounds without the need to cock the weapon between rounds. Because it can engage faster, it is used for covering troops in built-up areas.

The TRG-22, a Finnish weapon, comes in camouflage colours and has a longer barrel, meaning it can hit a target farther away. It is slightly slower because it has to be cocked after every round. What’s special is its foldable butt stock, which makes it more portable. The TRG-22 is used for field firing, which includes stalking enemy targets.

user posted image

The two rifles have been around in the SAF for about four years. Since they replaced older-generation weapons like the SR-25 and AWMP, they have made frequent appearances at the army open house back home.

Briefing time ended. We could try both rifles and fire two rounds each. I felt my stomach clench. Someone had told me the recoil was so powerful that it could dislocate shoulders.

But the recoil turned out to be rather tame. The rifles were not that loud either: Probably only as loud as the cookie-cutter SAR 21, if not softer. They could still be fitted with silencers. Nevertheless, the rifles were still not easy to use, as I found out.

The TRG-22 was up first. Another Commando supervised me as I lay prone on the sand, which was littered with thorny bushes and an assortment of pebbles. It was nothing like the ranges we train at in Singapore. I found a comfortable position and peered into the scope from my vantage point up the hill. Now it was a case of actually finding the target.

user posted image

Here came the most difficult part. Because the target was so far away, a slight over-adjustment made my crosshair lose the target completely. Rocks under your hip? Too bad. Hold still or you will miss the target. If you don't see a full circle through your adjustable scope, that means your aiming is off too.

The targets were rectangular metal plates located hundreds of metres away. Amid all the brown, a slice of silver was not easy to spot. The Commando was extremely patient. After a few more minutes of fumbling around, I managed to get eyes on target.

My “lazy eye” condition means I rely heavily on my stronger left eye. Aiming is usually done with the right eye, which was bad news for me at every rifle range exercise back in National Service. People have suggested wearing an eye patch, but that seemed to make it worse.

Crosshair barely staying put, I pulled the trigger. There was no metallic clink. Target missed. I cocked the rifle and tried again. Another miss. The Commando chuckled and reassured me. I thanked him and dusted off my jacket, which had turned a light shade of brown.

user posted image

The M110 was slightly more comfortable to use because it felt sturdier and no cocking was involved. I still missed on both tries, however. Another career option crossed off the list then.

So what does it really take to be a good marksman?

Patience, field knowledge and wit, I learnt. Especially patience, because snipers have to spend a fair amount of time finding their target while camouflaging themselves to perfection. Having good eyesight is not a must, because the scope, which can make an object appear three times closer, solves that. Colour blindness is a problem, though.

The elements play a huge role too. We fired on a clear, windless day: Perfect conditions for sniping. But when there is wind, snipers have to factor that into their calculations. Sometimes, they fire at a spot as much as 1m away from the target to compensate.

user posted image

While snipers deployed in real-life war zones sometimes have running games like who has the most kills, Commandos here focus on who can hit the target on the first shot, or in the least amount of shots. It is all about getting it on the first hit, I discovered. Missing the first try means giving away your position, or causing the enemy to run and hide.

Near me, a Commando rapidly fired off multiple rounds with the M110. Silence, then clink, clink, clink.

B-1B bomber joins US-South Korea drills as tensions escalate

user posted image

SEOUL: A U.S. B-1B bomber on Wednesday joined large-scale U.S.-South Korean military exercises that North Korea has denounced as pushing the peninsula to the brink of nuclear war, as tension mounts between the North and the United States.

The bomber flew from the Pacific U.S.-administered territory of Guam and joined U.S. F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters in the annual exercises, which run until Friday.

The drills come a week after North Korea said it had tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States, as part of a weapons programme that it has conducted in defiance of international sanctions and condemnation.

Asked about the bomber's flight, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a regular news briefing in Beijing: "We hope relevant parties can maintain restraint and not do anything to add tensions on the Korean peninsula."

user posted image

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea, the United States and Japan. Its official KCNA state news agency said at the weekend that U.S. President Donald Trump's administration was "begging for nuclear war" by staging the drills.

It also labelled Trump, who has threatened to destroy North Korea if the United States is threatened, "insane".

KCNA said on Tuesday that the exercises in which the bomber took part are "simulating an all-out war", including drills to "strike the state leadership and nuclear and ballistic rocket bases, air fields, naval bases and other major objects..."

U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Sunday urged the Pentagon to start moving U.S. military dependants, such as spouses and children, out of South Korea, saying conflict with North Korea was getting close.

The U.S.-South Korea drills coincide with a rare visit to the isolated North by U.N. political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman.

North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong Guk met Feltman on Wednesday in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, and discussed bilateral cooperation and other issues of mutual interest, KCNA said.

user posted image

Feltman, a former senior U.S. State Department official, is the highest-level U.N. official to visit North Korea since 2012. The State Department said on Tuesday he was not carrying any message from Washington.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in will visit China next Wednesday for a summit with his counterpart Xi Jinping, Seoul's presidential Blue House said. North Korea's increasing nuclear and missile capability would top the agenda, it said.

The military exercises, called "Vigilant Ace", are designed to enhance joint readiness and operational capability of U.S. extended deterrence, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

North Korea has vehemently criticised the drills since the weekend, saying the exercise precipitates U.S. and South Korean "self-destruction".

China and Russia had proposed that the United States and South Korea stop major military exercises in exchange for North Korea halting its weapons programmes. China is North Korea's lone major ally and fears widespread instability on its border.

Russia also has communication channels open with North Korea and is ready to exert its influence, the RIA news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov as saying on Tuesday.

North Korea has tested dozens of ballistic missiles, two of which flew over Japan, and conducted its sixth and largest nuclear bomb test in September.

It says its weapons programmes are a necessary defence against U.S. plans to invade. The United States, which has 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, denies any such intention.

Terrorist group planning to attack another city – Andanar

Citing intelligence reports, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar on Sunday said terrorist group Daulah Islamiyah, which is connected to the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups, has been planning to attack another city in the country.

He said this as he stressed the need to extend martial law in Mindanao, based on the proposal of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In an early morning interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Andanar said the Daulah Islamiyah group has continued its recruitment activities.

"Yung grupo ng mga tinatawag natin mga terorista na patuloy pa rin, double time yung kanilang pagre-recruit para dumami pa yung mga kapatid nating Muslim na sumama sa Daulah Islamiyah," he said.

"So ang balita ay lumakas ang kanilang pagre-recruit sa Mindanao. Ang problema nito, may mga intelligence report na nagpaplano silang umatake sa isa pang siyudad," he added, but he did not disclose the name of the city.

But he said that the intelligence information is enough reason to increase security in the country.

At the Bangon Marawi briefing on Friday, military spokesperson Major General Restituto Padilla Jr. said that the AFP is recommending the extension of martial law in the entire island of Mindanao.

Padilla cited terrorist recruitment and increasing violence from the communist rebels as the basis of the AFP's recommendation.

In the dzBB interview, Andanar also said that aside from Daulah Islamiyah, groups such as the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the Abu Sayyaf have likewise posed threats to several areas in Mindanao.

"So therefore, kailangan ma-extend ang martial law sa Mindanao."

Likewise, Andanar said violence may further persist in Mindanao after the formal termination of peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).

"Nandiyan din yung threat ng CPP-NPA-NDF dahil after na-announce ni Presidente na putulin na, tapusin na yung peace talks, of course kasama na diyan yung ceasefire, kasama na rin diyan yung pagbansag sa kanila na terror group."

Andanar clarified that the communist rebels cannot be immediately considered a terrorist group under the Human Security unless declared by the court.

"Once magdesisyon ang korte na gawin nang terror organization itong NDF-CPP-NPA ay magkakaroon na yan ng hulihan," he said.

"Hindi pa nagbibigay ng go signal ang korte ay tuloy-tuloy yung pag-atake ng CPP-NPA-NDF especially ng armed component nila sa ating mga kasundaluhan at mga kapulisan at mga pribadong kumpanya na hindi nagbabayad ng revolutionary tax," he added.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said last Tuesday that the CPP-NPA has been declared as a designated, identified terrorist organization, a move which came barely two weeks after Duterte formally terminated the peace talks with the communist group.

MINDEF to open computer systems to hackers so that vulnerabilities can be found and fixed

user posted image

The Internet-facing systems include the Ministry of Defence’s website, NS Portal and eHealth, according to the ministry.

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) is opening up its Internet-facing systems to hackers in a first-of-its-kind attempt to identify and fix weaknesses in computer systems in the public sector.

The MINDEF Bug Bounty Programme was announced by Singapore's defence cyber chief David Koh on the sidelines of his visit to the Cyber Defence Test and Evaluation Centre (CyTEC) on Tuesday (Dec 12).

From Jan 15 to Feb 4, 2018, about 300 selected white hat hackers from around the world will be invited to find vulnerabilities in eight Web-facing systems.

White hat hacker is an industry term to describe those who use their skills to improve security by exposing vulnerabilities before malicious hackers (known as black hat hackers) can detect and exploit them.

user posted image

The systems are MINDEF’s website, the NS Portal, the Central Manpower Base website, the Defence Science and Technology Agency’s website, eHealth, Defence Mail, LearNet 2 Portal and myOASIS Portal, the ministry said.

The vulnerabilities should then be disclosed to MINDEF, and the hackers will be financially rewarded for their discoveries according to how critical these are.

Rewards could range from about S$150 to about S$20,000, based on previous programmes organised by HackerOne, a bug bounty company engaged to facilitate the programme.

Mr Koh, who also heads up the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, acknowledged that there are risks in conducting such an exercise, but measures have been put in place to mitigate them.

For example, he cited the possibility that the selected hackers may turn rogue and expose their findings online, instead of disclosing them to MINDEF.

But that’s why the ministry selected white hat hackers to participate, and HackerOne to facilitate, as they have a reputation of hacking for good to uphold, he explained.

HackerOne also issues rules of engagement for these hackers to abide by, such as not launching distributed denial of service (DDoS) and not selling their discoveries. Failure to comply would result in them being censured, the defence cyber chief explained.

“This is the first time that MINDEF is launching such a bold programme," Mr Koh said.

user posted image

He added that bug bounty programmes are not new globally with the United States’ Department of Defense holding “Hack the Pentagon” exercises, while companies like Google and Facebook conducting similar initiatives.

MINDEF said the total amount paid out in rewards is dependent on the number and quality of the vulnerabilities discovered, and is expected to cost “significantly less” than hiring a dedicated commercial cybersecurity vulnerability assessment team.

Mr Koh explained that hiring a cybersecurity company to assess an organisation’s cybersecurity posture may cost “about a million dollars”. By contrast, the “Hack the Pentagon” exercise paid out US$70,000.

He reiterated that cost is not the main factor for launching the programme, but rather the crowdsourcing nature which allows for more and those who have different skills to participate.

It would also allow local white hat hackers to hone their skills. Of the 300 selected hackers, he hoped that the proportion will be two-thirds international ones and one-third from Singapore.

The launch of the bug bounty programme comes after the ministry announced in February this year that an Internet-facing system – the I-net system - was breached, and resulted in the personal data of 850 national servicemen and employees being stolen.

No classified military data was stolen, it added.

“Cyber is a new battlefront. Singapore is constantly exposed to the increasing risk of cyberattacks, and MINDEF is an attractive target for malicious cyber activity,” the ministry said. “As hackers with malicious intent find new methods to breach networks, MINDEF must constantly evolve and improve its defences against cyber threats.”

Omong Kosong, Malaysia Ngaku Siap Kirim Tentara ke Yerusalem

user posted image

user posted image

Kalaupun mau pergi berperang sendirian, jelas kemungkinannya sangat-sangat kecil.
