NBA Investigating Bowen's Game 3 Knee On Nash

The NBA has decided to look into Bruce Bowen's actions in the Spurs-Suns series.

For the first time in an increasingly contentious San Antonio Spurs -Phoenix Suns series, Bruce Bowen is officially under the league's microscope.
Bowen

An NBA spokesman confirmed Sunday night that Bowen's third-quarter knee to the groin of Suns guard Steve Nash in Saturday's Game 3 is under review for possible punishment.

Nash declined after Saturday's game and again Sunday to voice any public displeasure with Bowen's physical play. But the league decided anyway to conduct a full investigation into this incident after declining to do so when Bowen was accused of intentionally kicking Amare Stoudemire in Game 2.

Stoudemire called Bowen and Manu Ginobili "dirty" players after the Game 2 tangle, in which Bowen admitted he "did clip" Stoudemire from behind on a dunk.

If the league decides to fine or suspend Bowen, that announcement would come before Monday night's Game 4.

Barbosa Frustrated By Spurs

Leandro Barbosa asked Tony Parker for a favor Saturday.

"I was talking to Tony and telling him to leave me alone," Barbosa said Sunday, a day after the Suns' Game 3 loss. "He said, 'No, I can't. If I leave you alone the coach will get mad at me.' "

Barbosa has struggled against the Spurs in part because of their defensive scheme. Having Tim Duncan in the middle allows them to stay home on the Suns' perimeter shooters. San Antonio also plays terrific help defense, which stymies Barbosa's drives to the basket.

"Their whole game plan is to guard Steve (Nash) and stay on L.B. and Raja (Bell)," said Suns assistant Dan D'Antoni, who serves as Barbosa's mentor. "They're good enough not to have you go on your own and have a scoring tangent. The only time he gets a chance to do anything is when Steve is not on the floor, and then he has to run the club."

Added on May 15, 2007, 8:30 amBowen to play Game 4

Bruce Bowen will play for the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Phoenix Suns on Monday night, the NBA office decided today.

After reviewing Bowen's third-quarter knee to the groin of the Suns' Steve Nash in Game 3 on Saturday, NBA vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson upgraded the foul call on Bowen to a "Flagrant Foul 1" for the play. It carries no suspension.

Bowen apologized for the shot on Nash, insisting it was unintentional.

Bowen has come under fire in this series, which the Spurs lead two games to one, for his aggressive play. Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire called Bowen and teammate Manu Ginobili "dirty players," in part because he said he believed Bowen delivered a deliberate kick to the back of his leg in Game 2.

Added on May 17, 2007, 5:10 pmHorry Unapologetic For Hard Foul, Says Nash 'Flopped'

The San Antonio Spurs are downplaying Robert Horry's hard foul on Steve Nash, with Horry even suggesting Nash exaggerated his courtside fall through "great acting skills."

Horry has been suspended for the next two playoff games in the Spurs' series with the Suns.

Speaking at the Spurs' Wednesday morning shoot-around, Horry said, "I'm an old-school guy, so I'm used to hard fouls like that being nothing."

But he said, "It's a new day, a new age. ... The way the NBA has been going, I kind of figured it would be two games."

"If it had been anybody but Steve Nash, it probably wouldn't have been two games. But Steve Nash is a great player, MVP, a focal point for the NBA now."

Stern: Suns Have Nobody To Blame But Themselves

NBA commissioner David Stern on Wednesday said Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw are to blame for their suspensions for Game 5 tonight against the San Antonio Spurs .

Stern, appearing on the Dan Patrick show on ESPN radio said it's a misnomer to say the NBA is deciding the series with its suspensions of Stoudemire and Diaw.

"It's being decided because two Phoenix Suns who knew about the rule forgot about it, couldn't control themselves and didn't have coaches who could control them," Stern said. ... "I'm unhappy with the result, no doubt about it. But to listen to the palaver that Robert Horry changed the series is just silly."

"What changed the series is Amare and Boris ran out on the court and there wasn't an assistant coach there, one of six, to restrain them."

Stern said he's unhappy the NBA had to take action.

"It's a shame this happened," he said. "It's a shame that by the players not being able to control themselves they put the team in this position."

Shaq wants Carter with Heat

Part of Shaquille O'Neal's studio appearance during TNT's telecast of Monday's playoff games was a question-and-answer session with the Miami Heat center that was broadcast only on NBA.com.

O'Neal was asked by studio analyst Kenny Smith who he would pick as an additional sidekick alongside guard Dwayne Wade.

"I'm going to have to go with Vince ... 'cause Vince is there," O'Neal said, with the New Jersey Nets guard Vince Carter having the right to become a free agent in the offseason.

"I think he needs a player like me that can get him to the next level. I can get him to the next level."

Houston Fires Van Gundy As Coach

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was fired Friday, less than two weeks after Houston made yet another first-round playoff exit.

The Rockets went 52-30 this season but lost to Utah in seven games, raising the possibility Van Gundy was going to resign or be dismissed. This was the Rockets' third first-round loss in four seasons under Van Gundy.

Van Gundy had one nonguaranteed year left on his contract, meaning the team held the option to retain him. The team reportedly has contacted Rick Adelman, the former coach of Portland, Golden State and Sacramento.

GM Daryl Morey scheduled an afternoon news conference. The firing comes days after Morey took over for the retiring Carroll Dawson following the Rockets' playoff elimination.

Carter Hints He'll Be Back With Jersey

Nets coach Lawrence Frank, hurting from another playoff defeat, said it wasn't time just yet to talk about next year. But some players, including Vince Carter, made their intentions known. And Carter thinks he'll be back in New Jersey.

"We'll see what happens," said Carter, who can opt out of the final year of his deal worth $16-plus million and become a free agent. "But I definitely see myself (back). I fit in well; we built something special the three of us - myself, J-Kidd (Jason Kidd) and R.J. (Richard Jefferson) Getting (Nenad) Krstic back, Mikki (Moore) and Boki (Nachbar), we have a great nucleus of guys, I'd like to keep them together."

Moore has been everywhere, from New Jersey to Boston to Utah to Seattle and points in between. And after getting a return ticket to New Jersey for another chance to play for the Nets, he said he hopes his wandering days are over.

Horry Says He Wants To Play Another Year

Robert Horry didn't think his 15-year NBA career was in danger of ending with his recent two-game suspension because he doesn't plan on it ending after this season.

After saying earlier in the season he was leaning toward retiring, Horry said Saturday he'd like to postpone those plans and return to the Spurs.

"I've already decided I'm coming back, hopefully," Horry said. "It all depends on what goes on here."

Larry Brown To Rockets?

The Mavericks may be closer to losing one of their assistant coaches, but won't be losing their head coach.

The minute Houston dismissed coach Jeff Van Gundy, it was certain that Avery Johnson's name would pop up in the rumor mill.

But apparently, there's nothing to it, as the Rockets appear close to hiring either Rick Adelman or Larry Brown as Van Gundy's successor.

Thorn Wants To Keep Kidd And Carter

Rod Thorn said Saturday that both Jason Kidd and Vince Carter are likely to be back next season despite speculation that one or both could be used as bait to reel in younger, less expensive talent.

But Kidd's play during the postseason convinced Thorn that he's too valuable to get rid of, which is why Thorn said the chances that he'd include the point guard in any deal were "very slim."

"I think his play of the last month just reemphasizes how good this guy is," Thorn said. "Just his effort, his will, his never-say-die attitude - he's one heck of a player."
