Knicks Monitoring O'Neal & Garnett Situations

"The Knicks already are monitoring Garnett's situation closely, as well they should," writes Ken Berger of Newsday. "Despite saying he's not looking to make major changes, Thomas also is focusing on Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal, perhaps even more so than Garnett."

Berger advocates the Knicks sending a talent and pick package for Garnett. He states that Isiah Thomas would consider parting with David Lee to bring Garnett to New York. "Even if Minnesota demanded David Lee as part of the deal for Garnett, it apparently wouldn't be a deal-breaker for Thomas," reveals Berger, "nor should it be."

Wanted: Help for McGrady

Tracy McGrady told the media, his teammates and anyone else who would listen before the first round that if the Houston Rockets lost "it would be on me." McGrady has taken a lot of heat over the years for never having won a playoff series, but this was the first time his team would actually be favored. T-Mac decided to put all the pressure on himself.

So after watching his Rockets lose Game 7 to the Utah Jazz on Saturday, a loss that extended McGrady's winless playoff series streak to six, I couldn't help but feel bad for him. He may or may not have done the right thing in welcoming the blame, but in the end, he didn't deserve it. The simple fact of the matter is that Houston just isn't a very good team, and McGrady needs more help.

Don't get me wrong: The Rockets are OK. They did win 52 games this season, but relatively speaking, they're not among the NBA's elite. They are a slow, plodding team in a league that is going more and more up-tempo.

Houston relied on solid defense, attention to detail and the scoring of Yao Ming and McGrady to win a lot of games in a watered-down league. But now that the playoffs are here, the best teams are on display and everyone's weaknesses are exposed. And for the Rockets, their biggest weakness - a lack of playmaking perimeter players - was all too apparent.

Mutombo Once Again Considering Retirement

Rockets reserve center Dikembe Mutombo is once again considering retirement after having a reduced role in the second half of the season and playoffs.

Mutombo said he'd take some time over the summer months to make his decision. Mutombo and forward Chuck Hayes are the lone free agents on the team.

"I just spent the week with my kids and talked to my wife about it again," Mutombo said. "I'm going to see how my summer goes. I'm just frustrated with the fact that there was a chance for us to go to the second round."

Yao To Get Pointers From Hakeem?

Rockets center Yao Ming said he has discussed working with former Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon in the offseason.

"It would be a great chance for me, if I can learn from him, one of the best centers in the NBA history, and particularly a legend for the Rockets," Yao said. "I would love to. I'm working on it."

Parker Shakes Off Headache

Tony Parker said he had a headache while trying to sleep Sunday night, but otherwise didn't seem to be experiencing any ill effects from his collision with Steve Nash.

Well, except for the knot on his forehead.

"I looked at it last night. I looked at it today," Parker said. "I'm not going to make the cut of the Top 50 (Beautiful People) again."

While Parker admitted to having a headache the previous night, he said he felt better when he awoke Monday morning.

Shaq to Mavs?

No one really wants to talk about it, but the Miami Heat's main issue is the decline of center Shaquille O'Neal with three years left on his contract at $20 million per season.

Despite O'Neal's presence and reputation, he'll turn 36 next season. Frankly, it's difficult to see many teams that would even take a chance on him.

And then there are the Dallas Mavericks, which is where Shaq wanted to go when he was breaking up with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban said they are not panicking, but time will tell. Miami needs a major overhaul. Would Dallas take a last shot with Shaq? Maybe for Erick Dampier, Devin Harris and a sign-and-trade with Jerry Stackhouse?

Pacers' O'Neal wants trade to Knicks

Sources say Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal already has told the Pacers he wants to be traded to the New York Knicks and former Pacers coach and close friend Isiah Thomas.

Would the Pacers take Stephon Marbury or maybe a package with Steve Francis, Jared Jeffries and Channing Frye and the Chicago Bulls' first-round pick, which the Knicks own?

Riley: 'We Are Not Trading Shaq'

Pat Riley issued a statement on Wednesday in regards to the possibility of the Miami Heat trading center Shaquille O'Neal.

"Amongst growing speculation in the media, in reference to Shaq, I want to set the record straight and say that we are not trading Shaq."

Bulls Main Problem: Offense

In the Bulls matchup with the Pistons, which continues Thursday night with Game 3 at the United Center, Ben Wallace is averaging more points than Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich and is shooting better than those two and Luol Deng.

In other words, the Bulls' top three scorers have to find their touch or they will have a long off-season to search for it.

As usual, coach Scott Skiles answered a question about this dynamic with about as much nuance as a fist to the jaw.

"Let's face it: Our main players have to step up," Skiles said. "That's what happens this time of year. That's how you advance."

Deng's dominance and Gordon's aggressiveness were big reasons the Bulls swept the defending NBA champion Heat in the first round. Hinrich is struggling offensively for the second straight series.

The threesome is shooting a combined 37.9 percent.

Amaré Calls Spurs Dirty

Amaré Stoudemire called the Spurs a dirty team and directed most of his words towards Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili.

"It was a wide-open play," he said. "I saw the replay and Bruce Bowen came up behind me, measured his feet and kicked me purposely in the back of my Achilles. That was a dirty play.

Morey Officially Takes Charge As Rockets' GM

Daryl Morey officially succeeded Carroll Dawson as Rockets general manager Thursday, the Rockets announced, though he had been the acting general manager since the season ended.

Morey had been the Rockets assistant general manager since April 3, 2006 when he was hired to succeed the retiring Dawson. Dawson was named senior consultant on Thursday.

"It's like your birthday," Morey said. "When the day comes, you feel the same. This was well-designed by Leslie (Alexander, the Rockets owner), Carroll and Dennis (Lindsey, the Rockets vice president for basketball operations)."

Though Thursday's announcement defined who would handle the GM duties, Morey said it had been made clear throughout the NBA that he would be moving into the position.

"This process has been taking place for some time," he said. "It feels like a non-event."

Jermaine Wants LA Or NY

The Warriors' Stephen Jackson, former teammates with Jermaine O'Neal of the Pacers, told the media he thinks O'Neal wants to be traded.

"I don't think he has any patience (left), but Jermaine is the ultimate professional," said Jackson.

Whether O'Neal has demanded or requested a trade in his discussions with Pacers management may simply be a matter of semantics. Los Angeles and New York are thought to be the 6-11 All-Star's preferred destinations.

"I talked to him a while back, and he was saying that if he did get traded he would want to go to those two teams," Jackson said. "Isiah and Jermaine are good friends. If it does happen, look out East. Him and (Eddy) Curry in the paint are going to be a monster. But him and Kobe will be a monster, too."

Kobe: "My Patience Is Really On 'E'"

Kobe Bryant can opt out of his current contract with the Lakers after the 2008-2009 season and he didn't exactly shoot down the possibility of exercising that option.

"I've been a Laker fan my whole life, I hate to even think about me going someplace else," Bryant said.

"When I re-signed here, they promised that they would build a contender and build a contender now. I don't want to have to wait anymore than I already have," he said.

"I know my patience is about as short as my 1-year old daughter. ... Here we are now, three years from then and my patience is really on `E,' so we really have to put our pedal to the metal and do something."

Lakers Don't Want Smush Back Next Season

The Lakers have already let Smush Parker know he won't be back next season.

"Smush is not someone that we are going to actively seek out to come back and play with us," Phil Jackson said Friday.
