Crucial MX500 1TB now only USD139.99 on Amazon (USD155.15 including shipping + import tax. After convert around ~RM650)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077SF8KMG/ref=tw...ding=UTF8&psc=1
Cheaper than any current Malaysian pricing.

I think early next year can reach USD100 for 1TB because ssd will not get affected by US tariff. What do you guys think? hmm.gif
*

Nope. viewnet was selling 1TB MX500 in 11.11 for RM622. Beat that price first.

I suspect they gonna do it again in 12.12 sale. I gonna hope they got sell BX500 240GB version. no stock in 11.11

What is the best bang for bucks or value per performance for 250GB of SSD? Already on Samsung bandwagon long ago, but wanna get another SSD for my second laptop that is running SATA 2 only. lol
*

your sata 2 support NCQ/AHCI or not?

If not dont bother fast SSD. Even dramless will be bottleneck by non-NCQ sata 2.

Eh, how to diagnose this? This is new to me.
*

check with the bios. find AHCI keyword.

modern Dramless is not much different vs dram SSD. They use NAND to store the data map address instead of RAM.

the issue with dramless SSD is random read write over large area will take a performance hit. For example large area like writing >20GB of many small files randomly. Cause of this because the controller buffer is used up after large writing, causing it to re-read nand for data mapping.

but if u are replacing HDD for lightweight use, dramless SSD will perform just as fast as dram version.

Again it depends on your usage, if u keep writing like >20GB data, that is going to be an issue.

Normally it is recommended to buy DRAM SSD over dramless version. If you are buying large capacity, the price different isnt much about RM70+ extra only. But those low end capacity can be a different between 120GB vs 240GB. for example, a DRAM 120GB SSD cost as much as a 240GB Dramless SSD. In this case I rather pick the 240GB.

Still, DRAMless SSD will wear faster than those with DRAM.

Crucial MX500 prices are hard to ignore.
*

why u are so concern about SSD wear in 2018?

a 240GB dramless have 80TBW, thats 22GB per day everyday for the next 10years or 44GB per day for 5 yrs. If you actually write that much every day for 10yrs, you are not a casual user already.

MX500 prices are only good for 500GB and above. The 250GB is overpricing, it is real close to dramless 480GB.

I like my things last longer.

Advantages with Crucial MX500

5 years warranty
more TBW
A bit more space
DRAM cache = no stutter

I have no issue paying for those advantages.
*

valid argument for your personal opinion. I was talking about for people who are replacing HDD for old computer, for them it is a huge upgrade even dramless SSD.

for lasting longer it is pointless for most users, most user probably throw away the drive b4 they reach TBW unless they get lemon unit. If you are comparing TBW & capacity, A dramless SSD at twice the capacity @ same price will win those 2 points you mentioned.

Replacing HDD shouldn't even consider DRAMless. Unless you want stuttering. Already got people complaining about A400.

Secondary? Maybe. Warranty still gives you a piece of mind.
*

once again it depends on the user usage.

Yes, avoid heavy loads. Some DRAMless SSD even stutters with slightly elevated load.

*

oh you base on Sandisk ssd plus ah, thats is a shitiest tier among dramless SSD. You avoid at all cost, even A400 is significant better laugh.gif Sandisk dont even post TBW rating also, no reason to buy that model as it is not even cheaper.

Maybe we can have our own version of LYN choice of TOP 5 DRAMless/DRAM SSD?
Easier for people make purchase.
*

no need, the pricing choices is pretty clear to me for best bang of buck/quality.

top SSD dramless = Crucial BX500 almost as cheap as A400, it is basically MX500 with dram removed.
top SSD dram = Crucial MX500, for 120GB version, just pick the Kingston UV500.

this is a known fact. in general, nand-based sata ssds are relatively sufficient as game drives, compared to nvme counterparts. hence it's more practical to use large-capacity sata ssds for such purposes.
*

lol skyrim load time....SSD is useless there compared to HDD laugh.gif

very impress with their engine, large area somemore.

to me large ssds are meant for apps and games mainly; 3d-tlc is already good enough for my work purposes and usage.

for the dedicated os drive, i prefer 256 to 512gb range. (it's faster to create full backups or perform restores without worrying about data; also helps constrain myself to store large files in it haha)
*

smaller SSD as OS drive helps, because you can clone backup your entire OS drive into old HDD, then put that HDD into cold storage incase your SSD when poof, we got HDD as restore ppint

those HDD b4 500GB era is build like a tank they dont die. Might as well re-use it for OS backup. I re-image my OS every few months. Old HDDs has their use after all.

Should be since I got halve from what you got. biggrin.gif
Theoretically SATA2 at 300MB/s while SATA3 at 600MB/s.
Is a good investment as I notice the startup and shutdown quite responsive compare to mechanical drive. rclxm9.gif
*

I got a 250GB Seagate SSD @ RM145 @ Shopee (RM112 after coupon applied) instead. It is a dram SSD @ dramless SSD price with 5yrs warranty somemore. rclxm9.gif

So much cheaper than MX500, I will be using it on sata 2 OS drive as well on my old Q9650 computer. IMO, MX500 250GB is too expensive/GB, they need to drop that price down to ~RM150.

Wahh. What model is that Seagate SSD? I remember got at least 2.

Barracuda looks okay....
https://www.anandtech.com/show/13672/the-se...gb-ssd-review/3
*

New model Barracuda SSD from shopee All_IT was RM145 @ 12.12 sales.

it is like 5-10% drop in performance from MX500 but much cheaper price. Pretty good for people who wanna jump to SSD. Like I said again, Crucial really need to do something on that MX500 250GB price.

Maybe due to bigger DRAM cache for MX500.

I just bought Crucial MX500 1TB at RM564 from Shopee (Viewnet).
*

more like because of old controller, from the review. not gonna affect me anyway on sata 2 lol.

Seagate SSD 500GB has 512MB RAM, I think it is same as MX500. So I am guessing 250GB has 256MB?

How about Seagate Barracuda vs Kingston A400 vs WD Blue?
Searching a SSD for my laptop replacement which occasionally use for photo editing using LightRoom and Photoshop.
*

WD blue is a completely diff price range.

Just get barracuda 250GB, unless u looking for larger size, then you get Crucial MX500.

for the UV500 spec
also UV500 480GB kingston is 512mb dram, pretty much same as the rest of the SSD like barracuda, MX500, WD blue, X600 etc.

Anybody can recommend a 120gb ssd boot drive

want to replace my old sandisk x300s with dram and mlc

but after so many years, it feels like ssd tech became worse, full of dramless and tlc
*

just buy Seagate 250GB SSD. It is best budget SSD now @ RM150+, with shopee coin/lazada code and some coupon code, you can knock down the cost further.
