Can use as a modem/router

Can use to sync your PC/Mac content to Apple TV then it will sync to your big screen HDTV.

Basically you must have a HDTV for everything. That's what I know, correct me if I'm wrong.

At this point of time, its not really worth getting a HDTV. Maybe in a year or two??

Actually the Apple TV doesn't do much, I would rather spend the money in getting a better LCD monitor. The Apple TV is still first batch anyway, no hurries.

The AppleTV fulfills the role of a box that syncs between your computer and your flatscreen TV. To correct Mike; it is also NOT a broadband modem/router.

If you do NOT have a TV that is capable of 1280p then don't bother.

If you do NOT buy content off iTunes then don't bother.

You COULD of course, hack the hardware/software to force the poor thing to play DIVX and boot OSX but to what point? You might as well buy a Mac Mini if that is the case.

Or do as I do and hook a HTPC (In my case a ShuttleXPC running a lowly Pentium4) and network it to your home network. I use this to play downloaded TV on my Bravia. It works very well.

The AppleTV is slicker, works without having to manually transfer files from your computer to the set-top box and is VERY nice. However, until I'm in the US and am able to buy more credit for my iTunes Store account: it's not very useful.

Nice purchase ASAP. Will be joining you once I get back from New York in May.... cool2.gif

In one simpler words, "know what you want & buy what you need."
Don't think you can go far with 1Ghz & 256MB of RAM. It works but dont hope too much.

I just build an ATX G4 as my HTPC. I do not have a HDTV at the moment. I'll pass.

Useless! I rather buy Xbox360 or Media Center PC which is about the same price and can do a lot of things. Movies from Itunes are designed for Ipod, imagine u watch them in high defination TV, the quality must be horrible.

erm an AppleTV is cheaper than a Mac Mini. Hence the lure. And there's no 1280p btw. Max is 1080p.

but can apple tv support 1080p? i thought it only supports 1080i, which mean any HD TV ready that can be purchase below RM3500 depending on the size of screen is sufficient.

but i could be wrong, but the product is still cool gadget to buy if you have extra cash laying around and you are hard core mac fan.

if i'm not mistaken... Apple will be releasing HighDef shows in the future... they surely will not think of these high-def machines if it will not be supported by iTunes store, right? that will be a very bad judgment and strategy...

basically i agreed on wat u MacDL said...

rm1299 is too much for a box tat can only play movie which u must sync from a pc...

and it got no dvd slot... so wats the point to get an appleTV, n a ninja turtle movie DVD...
where we need to copied to pc then sync to appletv...

rather buy a nice set of sony dvd player n enjoy the movie by juz sloting the dvd into it...

Hey, don't get me wrong.

I think the AppleTV is a great idea. And I plan on getting one while I'm in the US in early May. Although I'm aware it will not sync .avi files which constitute the bulk of my TV watching these days.

Why?

Because it will simplify my life.

Let me explain... At present there are three TV shows that I watch: Heroes, Lost and Prison Break. At present I have to keep track of when the new episodes come out; find a torrent that has enough people seeding and then monitor the download. Then I have to manually transfer the downloaded file to the HTPC in the living room. Needless to say; to transfer and watch requires me to trot downstairs (or get one of my sons to go downstairs) and switch on the HTPC.

With the AppleTV; all I have to do is click "Buy Season"at the iTunes Store. Each time a new episode becomes available; my desktop Mac will download it automatically and it will then sync this to the AppleTV. All without any input from me (other than the original "Buy Season"bit that is).

Caveats are that an iTunes Store account (which I already have) is required. Reloads of the iTS account require a US credit card. Since I don't have this; I'll have to buy a iTunes Store "gift card". This is available on eBay but since I'll be in the US in May; I plan to get a sizeable ammount to enable future purchases.

I'll still use the HTPC for other downloads. But for TV proggies that I will always watch; I'll buy the legit version.

yaaahh agreed with some comments of NOT buying apple TV .. it is better to invest on a Mini Combo that can play DVD and music from USB thumbdrive .....

reason is that ... In malaysia... apple Tv cannot perform to the max of it should be doing ...

other then sync with your mac ....

its clear that without the itune account... this apple Tv is useless in some way ....

Thanks for my frens who generously buy the gift cards on my behalf, so everytime, i credit run out, i just sent an email and asap i got new credits for iTMS. seriously buying legit from ITMS is so F$^king fast man, not like bt.

as Macdenife mentioned earlier, it is for convenient stake and also for the cool factor. i bought my appletv from Osaka.

Hi,

Managed to install the OS X on the external HDD and boot into the Apple TV. It takes few hours just to make sure it follows the instruction. So far I am able to remote control my Apple TV from my Macbook and will install the plugin into my Apple TV to watch other files. Hope everything will run smoothly tonight. Will update the overall experience once done.

I am able to install all the files required to watch divx and other format. But the hard part now is to transfer file to Apple TV to watch. There is no simple way to transfer the files yet. Hope the USB storage hack quickly materialise. It takes 3 nights to fully modify it. Anyway, it is good way to waste time.

I've read the "hacks" available for modding the AppleTV to do things it was never meant to do. Seriously, my reaction is: Why bother?

If you want to play Divx and avi files, It would cost you MUCH less to assemble a HTPC using parts that you've probably ALREADY have lying around. In my case; a Shuttle box that my son has outgrown. You don't even need a fancy graphics card; onboard intel graphics does fine.

The AppleTV is supposed to be an automated-download-and--sync-to-my-PC box. If you're going to have to manually move files to it....

... but if it's fun, why not? cool2.gif

I really don't see the point of buying an appleTV.
First of all we don't have access to iTMS, unless of course you would have to go to America, reload your credit.. etc etc. Plus I don't think most of us actually buys alot of content from the iTMS store. Even though I'm pretty sure there would be a market for it, it is just that there are so many barriers for us to get past to actually make it viable.

Another alternative to the AppleTV would be to just build your own media center.
I'm planning to build one using spare parts around the house (like MacDaNife) and just running MythTV on Linux. Does everything an AppleTV can, plus something like the current AstroMAX (records, rewind, playback) as well.

Don't be a dumbass, read the etc and etc at the end. I was also making a reference to
a post by MacDaNife, who was going to America in May or something. Plus Ebay, and friends overseas, would also constitute as another hurdle to jump over just to be able to purchase
from the iTMS store. Not everyone can make purchases from iTMS and charge it straight to his/
her credit card.

So move along now, driveby.

Hi all,

After few days of modifying the Apple TV, now the machine is able to do the following

1. Play all kind of video files except the common like RMVB
2. Automatically mount the drive on my mac
3. Able to display all contents on my external drives
4. Able to browse all media files and stream thru Apple TV

However, it needs some time to modifying the machine, kinda time consuming. Just to inform you all. Thanks

Anyway just my 2 cents, what the heck is happening to the world these days? Over here there are TV tuners for computers/Macs, and on the other side Apple TV, which makes it possible to view whats on your computer/Mac on your TV, and some people actually ended up with BOTH!

Think about it, watch TV on your computer/Mac, then watch computer stuff on your TV. What the heck?

No, it wont void your warranty unless you upgrade your HDD in Apple TV

I am using the external USB drive to mod the internal Apple TV OS so it can auto mount my Media drive and play from there. It plays most of the online video files.

So far my Apple TV, it is great. It fits my requirement of home entertainment center. On 24 hours, silent operation, sync without any glitches, play most of the files, look cool but the only down side is require modification after you buy the new apple tv.
