CHELSEA are turning their attention to a crop of English midfielders due to their home grown quota.

Chelsea have allowed John Terry, Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Chalobah to all leave this summer.

Meanwhile, other potential first-team players in Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kurt Zouma and Izzy Brown have been loaned out ahed of the new season.

That leaves Antonio Conte with just one English player in his squad in defender Gary Cahill.

The club are currently able to call on just five homegrown qualified players in Cahill, Victor Moses, Andreas Christensen, Cesc Fabregas and Charly Musonda – three short of the eight-player minimum.

Further signings are expected at Stamford Bridge, with Conte looking to add another striker, centre-midfielder, attacking midfielder and wing-back.

And it appears the Italian boss has identified midfield as a position where he can ensure Chelsea meet their squad requirements.

According to the London Evening Standard, the Blues are struggling to land Renato Sanches on loan from Bayern Munich and are keen on bringing in England internationals.

Leicester's Danny Drinkwater, Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Everton's Ross Barkley are all wanted.

N'Golo Kante and Cesc Fabregas are Conte's only first-team options currently in central midfield with Tiemoue Bakayoko injured and Nemanja Matic now at Manchester United.

As a result, the London Evening Standard add Chelsea are considering making a bid for Barkley, who wants to quit Everton with his contract now in its final year.

Chelsea are also monitoring Oxlade-Chamberlain's situation at Arsenal, who is in a similar position to Barkley.

The Gunners ace would offer Conte versatility too in his team, which is appealing to the Blues.

And Drinkwater is also on their wishlist, although Leicester do not want to sell with his current deal not expiring until 2021.

Virgil Van Dijk met Chelsea without permission before telling Saints he wanted to leave
LIVERPOOL were not the only club to hold talks with Virgil Van Dijk without getting permission from Southampton.

That’s according to the Irish Independent, who claim Chelsea and Manchester City spoke to the Holland international before that was granted too.

Van Dijk has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players since impressing at St. Mary’s over the past two years.

Liverpool, Chelsea and City were all linked with moves to get the 26-year-old on-board before the 2016/17 campaign drew to a close.

However, Southampton’s stance that he will not be sold has meant a switch is yet to happen with just days of the transfer window to go.

Liverpool were forced to apologise to Southampton in June having allegedly made an illegal approach to Van Dijk.

It seems the Reds’ inactivity may have been mirrored by Chelsea and City for fear of a potential report to the FA as well.

The Irish Independent claim Chelsea and City met with Van Dijk and his representatives before being given permission to do so.

That apparently came to light in May when Van Dijk informed Southampton chiefs of his desire to leave.

Saints’ reaction was a determination to keep the centre-back on the south coast beyond August 31.

However, the Irish Independent suggest Van Dijk’s reputation among Southampton’s hierarchy is almost damaged beyond repair.

And that situation could see him sold if Liverpool, Chelsea or City slap in a £70m offer before deadline day.

CHELSEA are preparing a fourth bid for Torino striker Andrea Belotti, according to reports in Italy.

Chelsea are in desperate need of new signings as transfer deadline day approaches with just 14 senior players in their squad.

One area the Blues must address is bringing in a new striker as Diego Costa continues to demand a move to Atletico Madrid.

Antonio Conte is reportedly keen to bring in Torino forward Andrea Belotti but has seen three bids rejected by the Serie A club.

However, Italian outlet TransferMarketWeb claim Chelsea have not ended their pursuit for the 23-year-old and will return with a fourth offer.

Torino have so far refused to budge on Belotti’s asking price and are holding out for bids in the region of £91million.

And with transfer deadline day just over a week away, the Blues may be forced to meet the Italian club’s demands.

Speaking about Belotti’s future in pre-season, Torino president Urbano Cairo was hopeful he would stay but admitted he could leave for £91m.

“Will he remain at Torino next season? I honestly don’t know,” Cairo told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

“Let’s just say that we were very clear with each other.

“When his agent asked me for an increase in salary after last season’s excellent campaign I said, ‘Fine I’ll improve the contract, but at this point let’s add a release clause worth €100m only for abroad.’

“We found a happy medium – I extended the contract, but if the player did such extraordinary things as to tempt a foreign club to come in with an offer of €100m, I’d allow him to leave.”
