Antonio Conte furious as Juventus reject £73m bid from Chelsea for Alex Sandro - report

CHELSEA have seen their latest attempts to sign Alex Sandro from Juventus once again turned down.

By STUART BALLARD
PUBLISHED: 00:10, Thu, Aug 17, 2017 | UPDATED: 00:12, Thu, Aug 17, 2017

Chelsea have been chasing the signature of the left-back since early in the summer.

Bids of £52million and £61m respectively have been rejected by Juventus with Max Allegri determined to keep hold of Sandro.

But, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Chelsea have submitted a third bid for the Brazil international worth a reported £62m up front with add-ons.

Juventus have already lost Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci to Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan respectively this summer.

And they are seemingly unwilling to lose another vital part of their defensive unit.

Conte is desperate to bolster his options in the full-back positions to provide competition for Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso.

And the Italian coach has cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks, with Juventus' latest rebuff adding to his irritation.

The report goes on to say Juventus are in the process of offering Sandro a new deal at the club which would see him earn close to £4.5m per season.

The 26-year-old joined Juventus from Porto two seasons ago and would seemingly be a perfect fit in Chelsea's system in the wing-back position.

Chelsea have so far brought in Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Willy Caballero this summer but Conte is reportedly keen to sign four more players before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The Blues have stepped up their interest in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while they remain hopeful of striking deals for Danny Drinkwater and Virgil van Dijk.

CONTE ON PERFORMANCE

“I want to thank my players. They showed me great desire, great will, great heart. A will to fight. I saw the fighters. I saw a lot of positive things in not an easy moment with injuries and suspensions – don’t forget that. It’s a fantastic result."

CONTE ON FANS

“Thanks to our fans. It was an incredible atmosphere. Great to play in this atmosphere. The fans were important. They pushed us in every moment when we was suffering.”

CONTE ON LUIZ

“David Luiz played very well. It was an amazing performance. He played with great experience and personality – he was a point of reference for other players. We had four new players. When you change two players with Christensen and Rudiger – it’s not easy for them. We showed great desire to stay compact and not lose balance. We are the champions."

CONTE ON WEMBLEY

“To see this atmosphere was great. It’s a fantastic stadium – it’s amazing for the opponent.

“Despite 70,000 Tottenham fans, in this atmosphere, our fans tried to push the same.”

-Further signings at these positions expected? another striker, centre-midfielder, attacking midfielder and wing-back
-We need 3 more home grown players. The club are currently able to call on just five homegrown qualified players in Cahill, Victor Moses, Andreas Christensen, Cesc Fabregas and Charly Musonda – three short of the eight-player minimum.
-What if we get Renato Sanches on loan from Bayern Munich anyone?
-If unable get Barkley, can get Ox which is same position with Barkley. Dont think Everton will let Barkley go easily and cheap.
-Southampton's VVD talked to Chelsea without permission? Shhhhhhhhh...
-VVD sold if Liverpool, Chelsea or City slap in a £70m offer before deadline day. Wow, big money.
-23 years old Torino forward Andrea Belotti anyone? Belotti scored 28 times last season for Torino in all competitions and has started the new campaign in a similar vein with two goals in two appearances. Torino says valued at £91m. Chelsea preparing bid number 4.

Chelsea turn to England stars Drinkwater, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Barkley to help quota

CHELSEA are turning their attention to a crop of English midfielders due to their home grown quota.

By JACK STAPLEHURST
PUBLISHED: 13:11, Tue, Aug 1, 2017 | UPDATED: 13:52, Tue, Aug 1, 2017

Chelsea have allowed John Terry, Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Chalobah to all leave this summer.

Meanwhile, other potential first-team players in Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kurt Zouma and Izzy Brown have been loaned out ahed of the new season.

That leaves Antonio Conte with just one English player in his squad in defender Gary Cahill.

The club are currently able to call on just five homegrown qualified players in Cahill, Victor Moses, Andreas Christensen, Cesc Fabregas and Charly Musonda – three short of the eight-player minimum.

Further signings are expected at Stamford Bridge, with Conte looking to add another striker, centre-midfielder, attacking midfielder and wing-back.

And it appears the Italian boss has identified midfield as a position where he can ensure Chelsea meet their squad requirements.

According to the London Evening Standard, the Blues are struggling to land Renato Sanches on loan from Bayern Munich and are keen on bringing in England internationals.

Leicester's Danny Drinkwater, Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Everton's Ross Barkley are all wanted.

N'Golo Kante and Cesc Fabregas are Conte's only first-team options currently in central midfield with Tiemoue Bakayoko injured and Nemanja Matic now at Manchester United.

As a result, the London Evening Standard add Chelsea are considering making a bid for Barkley, who wants to quit Everton with his contract now in its final year.

Chelsea are also monitoring Oxlade-Chamberlain's situation at Arsenal, who is in a similar position to Barkley.

The Gunners ace would offer Conte versatility too in his team, which is appealing to the Blues.

And Drinkwater is also on their wishlist, although Leicester do not want to sell with his current deal not expiring until 2021.

Virgil Van Dijk met Chelsea without permission before telling Saints he wanted to leave
LIVERPOOL were not the only club to hold talks with Virgil Van Dijk without getting permission from Southampton.

By James Benson / Published 24th August 2017

That’s according to the Irish Independent, who claim Chelsea and Manchester City spoke to the Holland international before that was granted too.

Van Dijk has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players since impressing at St. Mary’s over the past two years.

Liverpool, Chelsea and City were all linked with moves to get the 26-year-old on-board before the 2016/17 campaign drew to a close.

However, Southampton’s stance that he will not be sold has meant a switch is yet to happen with just days of the transfer window to go.

Liverpool were forced to apologise to Southampton in June having allegedly made an illegal approach to Van Dijk.

It seems the Reds’ inactivity may have been mirrored by Chelsea and City for fear of a potential report to the FA as well.

The Irish Independent claim Chelsea and City met with Van Dijk and his representatives before being given permission to do so.

That apparently came to light in May when Van Dijk informed Southampton chiefs of his desire to leave.

Saints’ reaction was a determination to keep the centre-back on the south coast beyond August 31.

However, the Irish Independent suggest Van Dijk’s reputation among Southampton’s hierarchy is almost damaged beyond repair.

And that situation could see him sold if Liverpool, Chelsea or City slap in a £70m offer before deadline day.

Chelsea transfer news: Blues to make fourth bid for £91m Torino striker Andrea Belotti

CHELSEA are preparing a fourth bid for Torino striker Andrea Belotti, according to reports in Italy.

By JAMES CAMBRIDGE
PUBLISHED: 08:01, Tue, Aug 22, 2017 | UPDATED: 10:46, Tue, Aug 22, 2017

Chelsea are in desperate need of new signings as transfer deadline day approaches with just 14 senior players in their squad.

One area the Blues must address is bringing in a new striker as Diego Costa continues to demand a move to Atletico Madrid.

Antonio Conte is reportedly keen to bring in Torino forward Andrea Belotti but has seen three bids rejected by the Serie A club.

However, Italian outlet TransferMarketWeb claim Chelsea have not ended their pursuit for the 23-year-old and will return with a fourth offer.

Torino have so far refused to budge on Belotti’s asking price and are holding out for bids in the region of £91million.

And with transfer deadline day just over a week away, the Blues may be forced to meet the Italian club’s demands.

Speaking about Belotti’s future in pre-season, Torino president Urbano Cairo was hopeful he would stay but admitted he could leave for £91m.

“Will he remain at Torino next season? I honestly don’t know,” Cairo told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

“Let’s just say that we were very clear with each other.

“When his agent asked me for an increase in salary after last season’s excellent campaign I said, ‘Fine I’ll improve the contract, but at this point let’s add a release clause worth €100m only for abroad.’

“We found a happy medium – I extended the contract, but if the player did such extraordinary things as to tempt a foreign club to come in with an offer of €100m, I’d allow him to leave.”

Belotti scored 28 times last season for Torino in all competitions and has started the new campaign in a similar vein with two goals in two appearances.

Chelsea look set to be among the busiest Premier League clubs as the transfer window enters its final week.
By Simon Rice for Metro.co.uk
Wednesday 23 Aug 2017 1:38 pm

Blues manager Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire for new arrivals in order to bolster his squad. ‘The club is trying its best in the transfer market to improve our squad but I must be happy,’ he said at the weekend.

Alexis Sanchez set to play for Arsenal at least one more time, announces Arsene Wenger
With many players having been allowed to leave, they look short.

So what might happen between now and the close of the transfer window on August 31? Here, we take a look at those linked with the club and the chances of them moving to Stamford Bridge before next Thursday.

Striker
Jamie Vardy
The Leicester striker has emerged as a surprise target for Chelsea with Conte desperate for more options up front. Right now the Italian tactician has just Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi to pick from in the central role. When Arsenal came calling last summer Vardy stayed loyal to the Foxes, but could he refuse another chance to join one of the Premier League’s elite sides?
Likelihood of a deal: 2 out of 5

Andrea Belotti
The young Italian has been ripping up Serie A with Torino, making links with a move away inevitable. He scored 26 goals in 35 league games last season – a fine return for a 23-year-old. He has a £91million release clause which makes him a viable option if Chelsea are desperate enough.
Likelihood of a deal: 2 out of 5

Christian Benteke
If Chelsea really want a target man, then Benteke is an excellent choice. But the goal return and overall contribution of the Crystal Palace striker doesn’t appear to be of the level required for a Champions League team, making this look like a last resort.
Likelihood of a deal: 1 out of 5

Fernando Llorente
Chelsea have been linked with the Swansea striker for some time, with Conte a fan having worked with the Spaniard at Juventus. He had a productive season last term, scoring 15 Premier League goals despite his 32-years-of-age. Swansea manager Paul Clement has insisted he won’t be sold and that’s a position that is likely to have become even more entrenched following the recent departure of Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Likelihood of a deal: 2 out of 5

MIDFIELDERS
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
With a year remaining on his contract at Arsenal and reports that he is frustrated with his utility role, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been linked with an exit from the Emirates. Chelsea is an obvious destination and the Gunners may be unable to resist a sensible offer. Liverpool and Man City are also keen.
Likelihood of a deal: 3 out of 5

Renato Sanches
Earlier in the summer Bayern Munch indicated Sanches could leave the club on loan. Talk has since calmed but a deal still looks possible for the 20-year-old, who failed to make an impact in Germany following a big-money move last summer.
Likelihood of a deal: 2 out of 5

Ross Barkley
The Everton midfielder looks certain to leave Goodison Park this summer – it’s just a question of where he goes. He’s got less than a year on his contract, has no intention of agreeing a new deal and the Toffees want to see a fee. Chelsea and Tottenham are the clubs most consistently linked with the England international.
Likelihood of a deal: 4 out of 5

Danny Drinkwater
Conte is said to be a big fan of the Leicester midfielder and talks are understood to have been held between the clubs over his transfer. A £30million switch looks to be on the cards.
Likelihood of a deal: 5 out of 5

Antonio Candreva
Another midfield options on Chelsea’s radar is Candreva, a player Conte worked with during his time as Italy manager. Inter Milan are reportedly open to selling the 30-year-old, who tends to operate on the right, for around £30m.
Likelihood of a deal: 4 out of 5

DEFENCE
Virgil van Dijk
The loss of John Terry is huge but the signing of Van Dijk would go some way to replacing the centre-back. The Southampton player is desperate to leave St Mary’s, so much so he stopped training with the squad in pre-season. His club are entirely unhappy about sanctioning his departure and thus willing to hold out for a seriously large fee.
Likelihood of a deal: 3 out of 5

Toby Alderweireld
An alternative option is Alderweireld, a deal which would send shockwaves through football in London. The Tottenham defender is said to be unhappy with his wages at White Hart Lane and is considering pushing for a move. With Spurs on the verge of completing a deal for defender Davinson Sanchez, they could be prepared to let Alderweireld depart.
Likelihood of a deal: 1 out of 5

Cedric Soares
Back-up to Moses? (Getty)
Conte wants competition for Victor Moses at right-back – and another option as he balances Champions League football with the Premier League. Southampton’s Soares has been identified as a suitable addition with talk of a £15m switch. With the player pictured in London this week, speculation has gone into overdrive.
Likelihood of a deal: 4 out of 5

Chelsea eye move for Everton star Idrissa Gueye as Danny Drinkwater alternative
GOSSIP
Louis Sealey for Metro.co.ukTuesday 22 Aug 2017 3:12 pm

Antonio Conte is interested in signing Everton star Idrissa Gueye if Chelsea fail to complete a deal for England international Danny Drinkwater.
The Italian boss has been left underwhelmed by Chelsea’s summer transfer activity despite £140million being spent on Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger.

Conte admitted after Sunday’s victory over Tottenham that the club were ‘trying their best’ to secure further signings before the window closes on August 31.
Danny Drinkwater, who helped Leicester City win the title two years ago, is a top target and Chelsea have already seen a £25million rejected by the Foxes.

Leicester are playing hardball and value Danny Drinkwater at £40m.

Senegal star Gueye is seen as an alternative to Drinkwater

Leicester are in a strong negotiating position and their £40m valuation is proving to be a major obstacle as the Premier League champions were hoping to agree a deal closer to £30m.

According to the Daily Mail, Conte is now searching the market for alternative midfield targets and is an admirer of Senegal international Gueye.

The 27-year-old, who joined Everton from Aston Villa last year, was linked with Arsenal earlier in the summer but the Toffees will be reluctant to sell.

It is claimed Conte registered an interest in the defensive midfielder many months ago but Chelsea believed an approach would be futile as they were also in contact with Everton over a deal for Romelu Lukaku.

Conte’s search for a midfielder comes weeks after Chelsea agreed to sell Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United.
‘The club is trying its best in the transfer market to improve our squad but I must be happy,’ former Italy boss Conte said on Sunday.
‘We only have to think on the pitch and not to give answers to people.

Tottenham confident of signing Ross Barkley as Everton lower £50m valuation but face Chelsea competition
Metro Sport Reporter for Metro.co.ukTuesday 22 Aug 2017 2:54 pm

Tottenham are confident of signing Everton playmaker Ross Barkley for around £25million after the Toffees were forced into reducing their valuation of the midfielder.
Barkley’s deal at Goodison Park expires at the end of the season and Ronald Koeman has already revealed he’s set to leave the Merseyside club.

The Toffees spent big on Gylfi Sigurdsson and had valued Barkley at around £50m at the start of the summer.
However, there’s been a lack of concrete interest in the midfielder and Barkley’s hamstring injury means Everton could be left with an unhappy player who could sign a pre-contract to leave in January for free.

Tottenham have shown the firmest interest in Barkley throughout the summer and the Telegraph claim Spurs are confident of striking a £25m deal for the England international.
However, Chelsea remain keen on Barkley and his price reduction could prove significant for the Blues.

So we may get Llorente after all... then Drinkwater and possibly Barkley. But Ox seems to like play CM and not RW, he prefers Liverpool even after Chelsea submits higher bid than Liverpool dry.gif

Swansea are close to completing the £13m signing of striker Wilfried Bony from Manchester City, and Chelsea are hopeful that can trigger a move for Llorente, 32.

Llorente, who played for Conte at Juventus, scored 15 goals for the Swans last season but is expected to be used as a back up striker at Chelsea to £70m new boy Alvaro Morata.

He is currently recovering from a broken arm, sustained in a cycling accident, but is expected to be ready to play within a fortnight.

Meanwhile, Oxlade-Chamberlain has asked for time to think over his move across London, which has triggered fears of a late Liverpool bid.

The Premier League champions have also submitted a £25m bid for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, whose contract also expires next summer.

Danny Drinkwater has handed in a transfer request to Leicester City as he looks to force through a move to Chelsea.

Hazard, David Luiz, Christensen react to their FIFA 18 ratings

Get hyped for FIFA 18’s incremental improvements wooo!
by Rob Usry Sep 13, 2017, 10:47am BST

We’re just two weeks away from FIFA 18 releasing worldwide and player ratings and slowly but surely being revealed across the board. Rio Ferdinand, who is actually an “Icon” in FIFA 18, hosted three Chelsea players on his YouTube channel to get their reactions of seeing their new ratings.

Eden Hazard, David Luiz, and Andreas Christensen were each given a blank Ultimate Team card and asked to predict what they thought their own ratings should be. Then, their actual ratings were revealed. Hazard learned he was the 8th highest rated player in the entire game and the highest-rated in the Premier League. David Luiz was saddened to find out that his pace rating took a bit of an agist blow this year.

REAL PLOT DE GEA & HAZARD RAID

Real Madrid are set to rekindle their interest in Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard next summer, according to Don Balon .

Chelsea consider Edinson Cavani transfer swoop after row with PSG team-mate Neymar
GOSSIP

Chelsea are reportedly among the clubs considering a surprise January transfer window move for unsettled Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguay international’s future at the Parc des Princes is in serious doubt after a high-profile row with team-mate Neymar on the pitch during the win over Lyon at the weekend.

Reports emerged yesterday that Neymar wants Cavani sold after the dispute, which saw them come to blows on more than one occasion over who should be on set-piece duty.
PSG spent £199million on Neymar in the summer and the Brazilian is now their undisputed star, with speculation growing that Cavani could be offloaded as soon as the transfer window re-opens in the winter.

Chelsea are mentioned as being among his prime suitors, but Everton, Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are also interested, according to the Daily Mail.
There are various complications over Cavani’s exit, however, with the 30-year-old looking to maintain a decent pay packet, play in the Champions League and continue to be first choice up front.
The former Napoli hit-man would unlikely start every game for Chelsea after the success of their summer signing Alvaro Morata, though Antonio Conte has been keen to bring in another centre-forward to rotate with the Spaniard.
This saw Chelsea linked strongly with Fernando Llorente towards the end of the summer, but it is unlikely that Cavani would accept such a role at this stage of his career.

The player is thought to be keen on a return to Italy after success with both Napoli and Palermo earlier in his career, but would surely have to take a significant cut to his £120,000 a week wages to do so.
PSG are looking to sell players this January, however, as they are under pressure to adhere to Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations after a summer of heavy spending.

Cavani out

08.02: Neymar has demanded PSG sell Edinson Cavani after a fallout during the last match.

Cavani and Neymar battled for penalty cute in the win over Lyon on Saturday.

The Uruguay striker won the argument before missing the spot kick.

And now Neymar wants him out, according to Sport in Spain.

Neymar joined PSG for £198m this summer and is expected to get his way.

Costa warning

07.30: Spain boss Juan Lopetegui has told Chelsea Diego Costa he needs to be playing regularly to be considered for the national team.

Costa remains in exile in Brazil with a move to Atletico Madrid still taking time to complete.

"We are not angry," Lopetegui told beIN SPORTS.

"Costa's summer has been unusual, strange, complicated -- not just for him but for his club. He is still a Chelsea player. It's a complicated issue.

"Our hope is that he will resolve his situation as soon as possible and that he can compete, train and play, which is what he likes doing the most and what interests the national team."

Chelsea news: Gianfranco Zola praises Antonio Conte over Diego Costa treatment

CHELSEA legend Gianfranco Zola has backed Antonio Conte for his treatment of striker Diego Costa.

By DAVID WRIGHT

Costa was Chelsea’s top goalscorer last season as Conte guided the Blues to the Premier League title in his first term in charge.

But Conte text Costa after the season had finished to inform the Spain striker he is no longer part of his first-team plans.

The Spain international, who is currently on exile in Brazil and refusing to train with the Blues, is expected to rejoin Atletico Madrid.

Conte has come in for some criticism for the way he’s handled the Costa saga, but Zola believes his Italian compatriot was right to get rid of him if he was disrupting the dressing room.

"Nobody doubts the quality and value of the player but something must have gone wrong in the changing room," Zola told talkSPORT.

"A manager who is day in, day out in the changing knows how important a player is, not only on the pitch but also within the group.

“So if Conte has come to this decision it means probably there were no guarantees any more to have that harmony in the changing room.

"It is big loss for the club because we know how important a player like Diego can be.

“But you have to pay respect to the manager, who has to look after 24 players not only one."

Chelsea replaced Costa with the £60million signing of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, with the Spaniard scoring three goals in his opening four Premier League outings.

QUOTE(zoidx_chung @ Oct 2 2017, 05:42 PM)
this transfer window gonna hurt us so bad...
like fail to buy Llorente make us no target man after morata off
*
Or we should buy Andrea Belotti? Why we keep buy players on last day of transfer deadline?

Chelsea Transfer News: Andrea Belotti Contract Latest, Iker San Vicente Rumours
TOM SUNDERLAND
OCTOBER 2, 2017

Torino will reportedly look to lock down the talents of star striker Andrea Belotti with a new contract amid interest from Chelsea and AC Milan. Meanwhile, the Blues have been linked with Spanish wonderkid Iker San Vicente.

It hasn't even been a year since Torino last extended Belotti's stay at the club, but Italian newspaper Tuttosport (h/t Calciomercato.com) reported he's set to be rewarded with a wage increase.

It's said Belotti's salary will be increased to €2.5 million (£2.2 million) per year, while it's to be expected that Torino will either look to retain or even increase his current €100 million (£88 million) release clause.

Whether the Italy international would be worthy of such a massive investment is up for debate, although WhoScored.com recently illustrated how he matches up against one of the world's most expensive strikers:

Gonzalo Higuain vs Andrea Belotti: These two have scored 55 league goals between them since the start of last season -- not bad at all!

Chelsea might have a need for a striker of Belotti's calibre right now after Alvaro Morata limped off at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after 35 minutes against Manchester City due to a hamstring problem. Manager Antonio Conte did not term the injury "serious," according to Miguel Delaney of The Independent.

The west Londoners have capitalised a lot on the fact Morata, who is joint-second in goals this season with six, is so proficient using his head in a system that relies a lot on its wide players. Match of the Day hinted he and Belotti may be rather similar in terms of attacking style:

But Belotti's price tag would be a gargantuan amount for a striker who wouldn't be guaranteed to start under Conte unless he plans to employ a two-striker strategy more.

Calciomercato mentioned Milan as one of the other parties interested in Belotti, although it's clear the 23-year-old forward also had his admirers at Juventus:

🎙 @OfficialAllegri: "Belotti is a top player and key man both for @TorinoFC_1906 and the @azzurri." #JuveTorino

Torino will hope the offer of a new deal is enough to keep their star happy in Turin, although the reported offer only equates to a wage of just under £45,000 per week, a sum Chelsea could easily best should they wish.

It is time we set targets players to buy before transfer window reopen. Otherwise we waiting last minute, last day buy which we cannot afford. We have too few English players, no backup for Alonso(we know he prone to suspension, hopefully not Red Card like Luiz), more extra backup for Kante/Bakoyoko(they prone to yellow cards, suspension). No third Kante to be found in market currently... With the gaffe Conte not trusting Batman to replace Morata, and he seems to trust Hazard as False Nine. Last season some of us not convinced by Hazard False Nine role.

Hmmm, wondering how we survive next few matches as we without Kante, Hazard. See our thin squad, we may need play Musonda. See, this is a good opportunity for him.

Chelsea look set to be without N'Golo Kante for this weekend's trip to Crystal Palace.

The French midfielder picked up a hamstring injury during the World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria.

It is unclear as to how long he will be out for with Chelsea expected to discover the extent of his injury in the next 48 hours.

But what can Conte do ahead of the trip to Selhurst Park?

Our colleagues at Football.London have taken a look.

Back to 3-4-3
This season Conte has been trying to use a bit more of a 3-5-2 this season, however that might have to change at the weekend and Conte may go back to his 3-4-3.

It is something that worked superbly last season as they clinched the Premier League title and Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko would be the ones to fill the midfield.

While Kante has often been the engine in the middle of the park, this time his fellow Frenchman Bakayoko will have to be the legs to go box-to-box while Fabregas links up the play.

Luiz in midfield
This was a tactic that worked superbly in the game against Spurs when Fabregas was suspended for the Wembley clash, with Andreas Christensen stepping into the centre-back position.

It allowed the other midfielders to push forward a little bit more, however that could be a bit of a defensive option against a side who are yet to score in the Premier League this season.

But Luiz did show that he has got the ability to play in that position and it could be a useful option for either Saturday or Roma the following Wednesday.

Rush back Drinkwater
This would be a bit of risk as Drinkwater has not played for the Blues yet and is struggling with a calf injury himself.

Conte may not be able to use the England international quite yet, but the Italian will want him back as soon as possible to help with his rotation.

Could Drinkwater be back in time for the weekend? Maybe not. But in the coming weeks he should be back to some fitness.

Give Musonda a chance
Musonda has played in the EFL Cup (Image: AFP)
This is a bit of a wildcard option, but Musonda has played in the centre of midfield for Real Betis when he was on loan there last season and he could play in that position.

If he was, then he would need to be slightly higher up the pitch and that would allow him to be that little bit more creative and attack the defence.

However, the big question is whether or not Musonda can play in that role in the Premier League, and to be honest it is probably a bit too soon for him to be doing that.

Move Christensen forward
Just like David Luiz, the Blues defender can slot straight into the defensive midfield position as well as he has the ability to move the ball around and looks comfortable in possession.

Christensen has looked superb when called upon to play for the Blues and he does deserve to be playing more often than just the rare appearances.

Christensen is definitely another option to step into the role if needed and would no doubt look comfortable.
