Previously I've written two similar thread:
1. Guide to A Budget Condo
2. Guide to A Budget Wedding

Although this is not really a "Guide to a Budget Giving Birth in Klang Valley" because we didn't opt for government hospital due to the long wait for check-up at Klinik Kesihatan and also not given the option of choosing the same gynae either in government or half funded, half private hospitals. Therefore choosing a private hospital with decent charges and nearby to our place out of convenience and also because the gynae is good.

Please note that I'm not paid for anything that's written here and it's solely based on my own's personal experience and opinion.
Everyone would have their own preference and also opinion in things.

For the first time mummy who's pregnant and unsure what to do?
1. If your period is pretty regular, you would know that there's something wrong when you missed your period
2. Easiest way is to go to pharmacy and get a pregnancy test kit (Uhm, there's instructions that teach you how to use and read)
3. There's many types of test kits, but basically, they work the same. Cheap or expensive they are all almost the same. Except that there's one clearblue digital that tells you roughly which week are you in (base on your HCG level). There's no pregnancy test kits in the market that you can reuse, it's all one time usage only.
4. If you are still unsure, then you can always head to the hospital and ask for a blood test.
5. Usually you won't be able to see anything on the scan if it's less than 5-7 weeks, depending.
6. It's said that baby's heartbeat starts at 6 weeks, but sometimes you can't pick up anything until the 8-9th week. So don't be so gan cheong if you can't hear any heartbeat before that, and wait a while more longer

Picking a Gynae

Choosing the right hospital

Making your Birth Plan

What are the checklist and things you need?

Where to get what?

What's in the hospital bag?

I will add on the list as I go ...

Picking a Gynae

I'm speaking in terms of private instead of government in this context. Also, please note that in Klink Kesihatan (KK) you are not allowed to pick the doctors.
It's really important to pick a gynae that you are comfortable with. Because he/she will be the one that you entrust to deliver your baby at the end of the day. It's also ok if you change your gynae half way through.

This was my own's experience

I didn't have any proper gynae that I refer to before I'm pregnant. I went to 2-3 gynaes that were recommended by GP or friends. I won't mention their names in detail, if you need to find out more then you can PM me.

1. Seri Setia
I went to visit him because I was having period like twice in a month. He was ok and soft spoken but the location is way too off and it was just a normal check-up, so I can't tell much about him.

2. Bangsar
I went there to do my pap-smear test. The gynae was ok, super friendly but the charges are towards the higher side. But I guess I'm not comfortable with her style of consultation. I prefer my gynae to be someone who's straight forward and I don't really like to listen to too much of 'buttering' and excessive compliments etc. And the clinic also would push you to buy their supplements instead of asking you to get them in pharmacy. FYI, all these are generic medicines. Also, I've done some research that her rate of C Section is very high. Most doctors do this due to their own convenience.

3. FMGC, Jaya One
Worst experience ever with one of the gynae. Not the famous ones. I discovered that I was pregnant when I was overseas, of course being a first timer, I didn't know what to do and wanted to see my baby. So I walk-in a paid a whooping RM300 and learned my lesson the hard way. The other 2 gynae's schedule was full and there was only this 1 gynae left. I found out that I was pregnant when I'm about 4 weeks, I went and saw him when I was about 5 weeks, and he can't see anything on the ultrasound. Then he uses another stick that stick up to your vagina and he was unable to find anything as well. I can barely even hear him while he was talking, he was just mumbling the whole time and we were trying our best to figure out what is he trying to say. NO, NO, NO, not going back there for him again.

4. Columbia Asia, PJ
So we waited about 2 weeks and did some research before I found my current gynae. Location wise, it's very good for me and it's very convenient. There's always ample of parking available and RM2 for parking is pretty decent. Checked with my friend who happened to be a mutual friend and he mentioned that the gynae is pretty good. So we made an appointment and I've been with him since I was about 6-7 weeks until today.

He have night clinics on Thursday, so I don't need to take like time off or half day to do my regular check-ups. He always provided us with options, i.e. there's down syndrome blood test which is optional (if you are above 35 and none of these run in both of your family, you can opt out from this). I also like the fact that he is a gynae who is pro natural birth and do not do episiotomy (unless needed). Also, he doesn't encourage the usage of epidural as well. And he would ask to get the necessary supplements from pharmacy instead of paying 30% extra from the hospital. Besides, I always thought that it's a must to do the glucose test whereby they would force you to drink a cup of super sweet kind of liquid but I was told that it's not necessary that I go through such things since my glucose is consistently normal and both my parents do not have any history of being diabetic.

It's really difficult to find gynae who is pro-natural birth these days, because many of them prefer to do scheduled C-Section due to their own convenience. Compared to natural birth which may take way longer and they actually earn much more from doing C-Section. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with C-Section at all, that's your own preference.

Overall, I'm really happy with him and he's also quiet charming nod.gif

Choosing the Right Hospital

Choosing the right hospital that supports your birth plan is definitely important.
Here are the few things that you can request for at private hospital.

1. Ask for a tour to visit the wards and also the labour room
2. Usually they would have a package or charges that they can roughly tell you
3. Check if you can choose your own pediatrician after you give birth
4. If you want your partner to accompany you throughout the birth, do check with them as well (usually not an issue for private hospital)
5. Check with your gynae if you have certain birth positions that you prefer
6. Check with your gynae if there's request for delayed cord clamping, skin to skin, no bathing the baby until the second day, breastfeed friendly etc

Cost
Usually the estimated cost for delivery a baby naturally is about : RM3000 - 7000
and elective C Section would cost you up to : RM6000 - 20000

Package that I'm opting for at Columbia Asia, PJ

Making your Birth Plan

Many asked what is a birth plan? Do you have the rights to choose after all?
The answer is Yes, of course ! One should have the rights to choose how, where, when (subjective) they wanna birth their baby.

I supposed that there's not many choices around Klang Valley that allows you to do so, but there are selected ones that would let you choose.
The hospital that's more flexible with this would be Dr.Paul from Pantai Hospital, Dr.Nicholas from Columbia Asia PJ or speak to your gynae to find out if they are supportive of the below:

1. How you want to manage your labour pain?
With/without medication and if yes, with medication which are you going for?

2. Going through labour
When should you show up at the hospital? Some prefer to stay at home until they are about 6cm dilated. Some prefer to stay in the hospital.

3. Fetal monitoring
They will be strapping you up and your activity is minimal whereby you can only lie on your bed. You can ask for intermittent monitoring if your baby is not at distress etc. So that you can walk around and do things that you are comfortable with.

4. Labour Props
Vacuum or forceps? You can let your medical provider know if you would like to have such tools being use to assist you or to choose only use them when it's really required.

5. Labour Positions
Many didn't know that besides the conventional lying on the bed and give birth, there's a lot more other ways that you can choose to birth your baby.
Water birth is banned in Malaysia, but that doesn't mean that you can't birth your baby in other positions that you are comfortable with.

6. Labour Progress
Your medical provider should be asking your permission if they should be breaking your water bag or not

7. Episiotomies
Whether you would allow that or not. Some said cutting is better because it's a straight line, but what you don't know is that cutting means there's definitely tear which most probably is longer than your natural tear. And do you know that some mum don't even get any tear or very minor tear?

After Delivery

8. Skin to skin
You have rights to ask your medical provider to leave the baby with you and your partner and have skin to skin contact for certain period of time i.e. 30 minutes.
If there's no signs of distress, your baby should not be taken away from you and should be placed on your chest immediately.

9. No bathing of baby
Many have the wrong perceptions that baby is covered with blood and they are very dirty the moment they are born. That's wrong, because they are covered with vernix, which does not require bathing but just light wiping would do. You should have the rights to ask the hospital to only bath your baby the next day.

10. Cord cutting / delayed clamping
Whether you believe or not, recent research shows that waiting a few minutes allows extra blood to flow from the placenta to the baby and reduces the risk of newborn anemia and iron deficiency.

Let me state again: I'm not selling nor promoting anything here, everything was solely based on my own's personal experience.

Hypnobirthing
I came to know about Hynobirthing when I first attended a talk at Nexus Convention center. I was really skeptical and thought it was some sort of hypnosis kind of thing. Then I went and attended their boot camp talk and sign-up with the classes when I was about 7months pregnant.

What is HypnoBirthing® you ask? HypnoBirthing® is a tried and proven method that guides and prepares a woman in giving birth in a peaceful and extraordinarily beautiful manner. It is a program a that considers the psychological, as well as the physical, well-being of the mother, her birth partner, and the newborn, independent of context, whether that be in the quiet of a home, a hospital, or a birth center.

The HypnoBirthing® program is built around an educational process that includes special breathing, relaxation, visualization, meditative practice, attention to nutrition and positive body toning. Most importantly it fosters an air of mutual respect for the birthing family, as well as the health-care provider in a traditional health-care system or an alternative setting.

Hypnobirthing Website

My own personal experience:
RM1,000 for 5 session, every session is about 3 hours for a couple.
I've done with course with Birth with Bee My coach was Namrita, and she was really helpful and friendly.

Don't expect to apply 100% of the course. But it's beneficial for me because my birthing partner is not just someone there to look at me when I give birth, but he would be the goalkeeper that makes sure things go well, and he would at least know what to do at the point of time and what I need and how can he assist me. I've also learned some breathing technique, which hopefully I can put them into good use.

Why I choose to do this?
Well, when I first heard of birth without epidural I was like, are you serious? After all the talks from people around and the things that they implanted to your head. Also, the movies that traumatized you with horrible birth experience. Some people will just tell you, no no no you can't do this or this won't happen. Well, take it with a pinch of salt. It's their experience, not yours. Everyone have different preferences and different experience in a whole. I have minor scoliosis therefore I took this up and with encouragement from my gynae as well. I was amazed when I watched how the babies actually reacted to birth with and without medication. The best part is that I get to choose how I can birth my baby. And the importance of the 'golden hour' skin-to-skin boding which I'm allowed to have with my baby. How I know before I even give birth? I've spoken to few of my friends who went through this, and they have very good feedback and review. I shall share my own's experience after I give birth smile.gif

After the whole course, I have more confidence knowing that I'm in control of my own birthing plan and giving birth ain't that scary any longer. And I'm happily waiting the arrival of my boy.

What are the checklist and things you need?

Well, you can make up your own checklist or Google for one. But here's mine.
Being a first time mum, trust me, you will be over excited, over buying and getting a lot of things that you don't need.

About when I started buying?
Honestly, before I got pregnant. Shortly after that, I conceived.
Slowly over the few months, I started getting things here and there. The most I bought was clothes, and of course, there are many things that are given by relatives and friends as well.

I've also gotten many second hand things as they are relatively cheaper and they are still in very good condition. So why waste more money for the same thing that you won't be using for very long?

Things I've bought when I'm 5 months pregnant. Yup, a little too much huh? When your time comes, you will get what I mean. And daddy is encouraging instead of saying no to me biggrin.gif

Baby's Stuffs
Bathing
Towel - Don't get the cheap ones as it's very rough and may hurt baby's skin. I found a good one from Pureen that looks like micro fibre the other day at TCE Baby Expo that cost RM15/pc.

Handkerchief - You should get as many of these as possible as you would need to change a few in a day. I got a total of 30-40 pieces

Shampoo & Bath - Different babies reacts differently, I decided to try with Cetaphil baby first. Also, I got quiet a lot of samples from other brands from attending talks etc. I'm allergic to fragrance myself, so I try not to use anything that's with fragrance on my baby.
These cost about RM30-35 per bottle, I bought them in a set that costed me about RM43.

Baby lotion & oil - I'm trying with Buds as the Cetaphil's lotion smell is a bit too strong for my liking.
There are many types for Buds, for newborn the lotion is called Infant Cream. And I also got the mozzie clear lotion (I tried the spray but the smell is way too strong).
Infant cream, RM32 and mozzie cream also RM32 bought from TCE Expo.

如意油 - Many recommended the brand called TYT, because the original one appears to be much stronger and he/she might get rashes.

Sudocrem - RM19 for about 60g

Picking a Gynae

Its all about budget.
What do u have to spend?
For me, because i brought my wife to the so called recommended gynae and end up in waiting list or the wait is too long (months).
So i went to this clinic in Taman Connaught.
Its called Klinik Pakar Wanita Connaught.

Very good doctor, explain everything. No waiting list. Quite a number of people go there though (i think this shows its a good clinic)
One visit, with the normal 3d scan, everything in, rm70.

cheap right?

But my wife is not giving birth with that doctor. even though he delivers at Lourdes and Pantai Hospital Cheras.
Because my wife wanna give birth at her kampung in Kuantan.
The doctor in Kuantan says at least do a checkup with her around the 8th month.

So basically in KL my wife will have her regular checkup at Pakar Wanita Connaught and will give birth in Kuantan.

Another point to add. Private hospitals, if you have major complications, even though u have regular checkup with them, they cant accept for delivery and will push u to General Hospital.
For this u will need the "buku merah" from Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak (KKIA)
I have 2 frens who had this issue.
Their wife had some complications, referred to GH, and have to wait longer and undergo many other procedures before the wife can deliver at GH.
It is because other patients in GH have the buku merah. All info there and can straight go for delivery.
So in the end, we went to Pakar Wanita Connaught, KKIA and KPJ Pahang (not KPJ Kuantan).

Choosing the Right Hospital

Make sure that you and wife comfortable with the hospital, the doctor. Find some background info from google.
And of course according to your budget.
After i went researching online about hospitals in Kuantan, i opted to check few hospitals, and KPJ Pahang being one of them.

My first visit meeting the doc, she was very good at explaining and very soft spoken and very informative.
We asked to be shown the delivery suite and wards. She showed us around personally.

What really triggered me to choose KPJ Pahang?
After all is OK (doc, delivery suite, ward etc) the scan was terrific.
Before the scan we talked to the baby, we told the baby this might be the doctor that will receive you during birth.
My baby gave a thumbs up during the scan.
We more or less decided this is the hospital.

So, what is my criteria of choosing the hospital?
1) Wife comfortable with the hospital and doc.
2) The hospital, the delivery suite, the ward, the doctor.
3) Distance from the house (in my case) from my in-laws house in Kuantan.
4) Of course the budget (economy)

Making your birth plan

We used an app for this (Pregnancy+) and we discussed the birth plan with the doctor. Of course some of our requests like video recording is rejected. This depends on hospital policy. But we dont mind, so it was OK for us.

What are the checklist and things you need?

Go online for checklists.
Make sure u have the checklist for Mother, for baby and for Father as well.

For me, i will travel from KL to Kuantan when my wife starts her contraction etc. So everything is in the car.
Make sure the car is in good condition as well.
Also please make sure the best route from home to hospital.
This route will vary depending on the time of the day (rush hour etc).

Also besides the hospital checklist, there are also checklists for baby items and mother items etc ( stroller, baby cot and all other stuffs etc )

Where to get what?
Baby expo, warehouse sales. Check for this online.

What's in the hospital bag?
KPJ Pahang (not KPJ Kuantan)
Basically normal delivery that doesnt include epidurals and pain killers, induce, vacuum or forceps, with 2 days 1 night stay.
U can choose single room, double room or 4 in a room.
Prices varies.
Of course if u need epidural during the actual delivery, it will be extra charges.

They also have Caesarean package. Also can choose what room you want.

Usually single rooms are full. depends on availability.

Also, if its not office hours, after 5 or weekends, there will be a surcharge.

Im not saying Government Hospital is not good, they are good, but overcrowded so the nurses and doctors cant give you much attention like the private hospitals can.
Of course this includes to make your stay with them as comfortable and relaxing as possible.
Too many patients, they cant afford to give that much attention to everyone.

But still, my wife goes to KKIA (not GH, but KKIA is a must). very good. yeah long wait, but if she goes before 8am, around 7:30am like that, she will finish by 9plus, before 10am.
They really monitor everything, for free.

Also, even after giving birth, they will come visit your wife and baby at your home.

My case? After the KKIA in KL, when my wife stays in Kuantan on her 8th month, everything is transferred to KKIA in Kuantan.
Also the nurses visit her at home.
For babies with Jaundice, they do free checking.

Basically for KKIA, i never spent a single cent.

Anyway, my wife gave birth to a lovely baby boy last 13th of July.
I now know love at first sight.

You'll get the red book when you register at gov facility/ KKI/ hospital. That is your clinic card and used only for pregnancy period
After birth your baby will have an entirely new book on their own

I go check up at private hospital, they gave me a book to record my pregnancy progress, it's not the same format as the Buku Merah given at Klinik Kesihatan though. But IF emergency and the nearest is a gov hospital, I don't think they will turn you away if you don't have the buku merah. It would help if you have a record of your pregnancy progress though.

Yup, they cannot turn those people from private hospital away because we are still Malaysian citizens. When I read the chinese forums, there are people who kept saying that if you don't have the "Red Book" then your baby can't apply for birth cert. It's completely FALSE, don't get that wrong. In case of any emergency, government hospital will have to accept as well. Also, after your baby is out, you have the same rights to submit request and they will send nurses to your house to check on the baby and mum as well.

You need to find that KKIA that is assigned to your area. You can try to call KKIA to confirm your area or try browsing this website for more info http://jknkl.moh.gov.my/klinik-kkia

gov hospital will not turn you away incase of emergency. But it will take a longer processing time. they will provide the pink book as well.

Benefits registering in nearby KKI - they provide vacination foc and other consultative stuffs. also with the pink book you can actually make a schedule booking for delivery facilities especially for FPP section.

depends on what you want, but nothing to loose relatively

True they wont turn u away. But it u compare a private follow up book and a govt clinic follow up book, the govt one is more comprehensve. For a doctor who has never met u throughout your whole pregnancy and is now delivering you, this pink book tells the whole story.
- serial Urine checks,
-serial BPs,
-Serial Hbs
-Serial weight gain/ loss
- MGTT results
- the book has fetal kick chart
- detailed info about nourishment in pregnancy

For me, it is wiser to follow up in govt clinic (free) with free follow up scans.
U can complement this with private follow ups, detailed scans or 3D/4D.

I know this is a late reply. But this is a reply to future parents out there
Basically u call up these clinics and ask if your place comes under their kawasan.
Each KK covers certain areas, so that it is easier for them to handle this expecting mothers. The nurses especially are further divided into subkawasans. So throughout the pregnancy, u are most likely to meet the same nurses until u have delivered. They will monitor u n baby after the delivery (wound care, mom's nutrition and psychology well being, breast feeding methods, jaundice level)

yup. each kawasan have a KKIA.

my wife follow up in KL, but give birth in KPJ Pahang.
while she was in Pahang, the KKIA over there follow up on her condition (and baby as well).
Then go back KL follow up by the KL clinic.

Most of the Klinik Kesihatan (KK) provides a full range of services for all sorts of medical condition including maternal child health (MCH) services in their premise. http://www.jknselangor.moh.gov.my/index.ph...linik-kesihatan

However, KKIA only offers MCH services in their premise i.e. exclusively for pregnant women and child care. You can go to a KK nearby your place for regular pregnancy check-up.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I will go through the list and see which one is closest and give them a call if my area is under their care.

Would like to know if I should bring my wife to KK or KKIA in order to register for the Kad Merah?

Also, is it necessary to go to KK/KKIA that is nearest to where I stay?
So far I have checked, all KK is not very near. Else I will just pick a KK in Cyberjaya

Thanks in advance!! smile.gif

I think you should. Your wife should come and register for the Buku Merah, and then would proceed to do checkups straightaway.
The pregnancy should be at least 8-10 weeks if not mistaken, if not they would ask you to come later.

Yes, it's necessary to go to the KK nearest to you. They can reject you if you are not from somewhere near.
The reason is that they want to keep track of health of ppl nearest to the area.

You should always call before you went to the KK, to make sure you are going to the right KK, and also different KK have different procedures.
Some would ask for bill, some need husband to come for the first checkup (test for HIV). Depends on the area.
Some even has designated days, for example if you live in area X, you come on Wednesdays, if Y, come on Thursdays and so on.

If you live in Cyberjaya, chances are you're going to have to go to Dengkil KK, as Cyber doesnt have KK at the moment.

Hope this helps!

My wife secretly went to KK to apply for buku merah during her second pregnancy without my knowing, even though i can afford for private hospital immunisation and labor cost. The waiting time wasnt that bad. Just that you have to gets up early to get number. I saved RM 6k+ over that year.

Is true, waiting time is usually longer. When we have our first kid 100% in private hospital, we still need to wait like 4 hours during weekdays. KK is about the same and sometimes maybe longer.

My wife delivered under Dr Wai at Thomson less than 3 weeks ago. Overall charges including newborn fees at 6.8k. No epidural tho - precipitated delivery and cervix dilated too quickly to even consider.

We were very happy with the services provided by the nursing staff during her delivery and admission there. When baby was admitted a few days later for jaundice, the nurses at special care nursery were also very nice and accommodating with our questions.

Are you still visiting paed in Thomson? I wanted to ask about the vaccination charges in case we wanted to check out other alternatives.

Stayed with Thomson for my son's vaccination till he was a month old. I had Dr Priya as his paed, wonderful paed and calmly answered all my first child jitters. Charges wise I guess the most expensive was the Pneumoccocal vaccine, but a relative told me the Dr's charges were pretty standard with PJ standard around RM100-150. Currently my son is in Kedah, his paed charges RM30 for consultations. brows.gif
