Hi. Got a question needed to be cleared here.

My Pre-U results are out and NZ is one of my top choices for further studies.

I noticed that if I wanted to be admitted this year that would mean I have to be enrolled into the so called Semester 2 period, which is at around July if I am not mistaken.

Some universities do no recommend going into Sem2 directly and instead encourages students to wait for Sem1 intake period especially for those interested in engineering and science. Though that would mean I have to wait until next year. sad.gif

The problem is that would I be in serious disadvantage if I were to just go straight in into Sem2?

i'm doing science course at UC.

for me. 2nd sem a bit shorter, plus, from what i heard from people, 2nd sem usually questions during exam gonna be harder.. plus, it's winter that time.. so quite uncomfortable to study for some people.

probably others can elaborate more biggrin.gif

That's probably because, for a some courses, the 1st semester papers are prerequisites for 2nd semester ones.
For example, you may need to do PHYC 101 and 102 in the first year (and to progress to 2nd year papers). But PSYC 101 is only offered in semester 1 and PSYC 102 only in semester 2. Same for 2nd year papers 201 and 202.

Then there's fully year papers, were you do one paper over two semesters. They will start in semester 1, so obviously you can't do it if you only start uni in semester 2.

I suggest you check the papers on offer for the course you want to do. Try and work out if you'll be able to take all papers in the right order, without wasting time waiting for another semester/year.

true, that happened to my friend. he went in during 2nd sem of 2008, then contd first sem ( and finished his intermediate) 2009. but since first pro engineering wont start half way of the year. he had to wait for 2010 first pro.. so he spent his 2nd sem of 2009 taking only one course, repeating the same subject to improve mark, and working..

but lucky he is a citizen..

no problem with starting in the 2nd sem.
take summer school and cover whatever u've missed out .
if it still doesnt suffice, take an extra subject on the following sem1
dont worry about cramming more subject in your firsts years, its darn easy

I agree with EmperorMeng, there's always a lazy aura here in NZ especially Chch...
Internet wise, try Slingshit, oh i mean Slingshot, so far their free download at offpeak is the best deal atm. Internet at halls is usually expensive however there's this thing called dcplusplus where u can l33ch off other hallers and share some "legal" files.
Its always better to rent a house and flat with people you know + somewhere near uni to save up transportation cost!

Well if you want you can do Year 13 here in NZ, then go to University of Otago for Health Science, then you choose your major. You can work for government like General Hospital. Not sure if you can do Pre-U in Malaysia tough.

The best way to get into an NZ university after SPM other than going to do your pre-u there would be to do your pre-u here ^^ You can go to places like Taylor's that offers Australian Year 12 programs like SAM or Cambridge A-Levels which are accepted qualifications for entry into NZ universities =)
