Haze Hype - Day 3: Skills You Won't Find In Metal Gear Solid 4
Before anyone gets their knickers in a bunch about MGS4, let's remember that this is Haze Hype. Every trick in the book to hype the game is what we're going to use to hype the game. So don't take the MGS reference to heart. Although, it is true that some of the skills discussed below won't be in Metal Gear Solid 4. As it was mentioned in Day 2's article for Haze Hype, we promised you a detailed look at the skills that players will be able to utilize as the rebels and as a Mantel Corp. Soldier. So we'll give you a complete breakdown of those skills. And as a bonus, we're treating you to some new screenshots (courtesy of Free Radical) as a precursor for Day 4. Now it's time to talk about those skills. Just so you can follow along we have a chart of the skill set below and then we'll go over them a bit more in depth. ![]() Mantel Skills Taking a dose of Nectar will immediately make you tougher - you'll be able to take more hits, and dish out more damage yourself. As well as that, you'll have four key abilities. All you have to do, is try not to take too much of the stuff or you'll go nuts and start gunning down your squad mates. .Nectar Perception: thanks to the awesome HDR effects in Haze, the rebels can hide in the gloomier parts of the environment. But, thanks to nectar, you'll be able to spot them no problem. . Nectar Focus: The ultimate sniping aid. When you're zoomed in, this ability will help tweak your aim towards the perfect head-shot, from blooming mile away. . Nectar Foresight: Working like a sixth sense, this ability lets you see when something bad is about to happen to you. For instance, if a grenade lands at your feet, you'll see a 'ripple' effect pulse out of it, warning you that it's about to go off. Likewise if someone had a clear shot on you, or is about to melee you. . The Melee Blast: Who hasn't wanted to be able to smack a particularly annoying bad guy across the room? The Melee Blast is an enormously powerful strike that will send those rebels flying. I'm sure some of you are thinking 'Hey, isn't this like the predator mode from Far Cry?' To answer that question plainly: Yes and no. While these are similar to the special abilities that players could utilize in Far Cry, there's much more check-and-balance in Haze. For instance, using too much Nectar - as stated above - causes you to lose control (or if you're playing as the rebels, it will cause the enemies to lose control). So Nectar has to be used in moderation, despite the over-urgency of some situations. Also, the Nectar Foresight is a pretty cool addition to the Mantel skill-set, insofar that it designates dangers to the player via visual indications. A perfect example of this is like the Bond slow-motion effect that EA used in 007 Everything or Nothing, when picking items or scrolling through the inventory. In Everything or Nothing, key elements within the environment would be highlighted or would pulsate to indicate the danger they presented to the player. Hence, this very feature in Haze is a counter-measure to the often times unseen grenade, camper or rocket that could be heading your way. The Melee Blast, as described above, pretty much does what you would expect it to do. The cool part about this feature though, is that the characters respond to the attack with excellent physical deformation. While this attack may seem reminiscent to other power melee strikes in other shooters, you at least have to recognize that it's a feature well worth its stay and something I doubt any gamer would complain about having as part of their arsenal. The Promise Hand skills: Now here's the features that's worth talking about. The Promise Hand may seem like a scraggly group of fighters, but they can do things that will help turn the tide of war in ways that only a gamer could appreciate. You can check out the skills below. ![]() . Weapon Steal: Get close enough to a Mantel soldier, and you'll be able to punch him in the face and grab the gun right out of his hands. Seeing as they're so damn tough, it's the perfect way to even the odds. . Play Dead: This one's really interesting. When the Mantel guys are using Nectar, it censors their view of reality - so they can't see any blood or death. That means that when they kill a rebel, the body just fades away. So, by pretending to be dead, you'll disappear, just like any other corpse in a videogame. Then, when the Mantel soldier turns his back, you can jump to your feet and plug one in the back of his head. . Scavenge: As a rebel, you'll be able to recalibrate ammo from different weapons to fit yours. So, if you happen to find a minigun but it's out of ammo, you can fix ammo from, say, a pistol to fit that gun instead. . Traps: You can bury grenades under the earth, to leave a nasty surprise for anyone on your tail. Hardcore gamers from the old-school will probably remember using the melee Judo-chop on Perfect Dark and stealing weapons from their opponents. Well, the feature has returned. Only this time there's a lot more at stake than just taking out one opponent for his weapon. The cool part about Haze's Weapon Steal is that it works in complete conjunction with any situation. Say you need to commandeer a vehicle...simply Weapon Steal one of the Mantel soldiers and snag his ride. Without a weapon he won't be able to shoot you down while you're on the run. But let's say you're pinned down under heavy fire and you need to disperse an enemy flank. Let your squad-mates put down the suppression fire while you sneak around and disarm one of the Mantel soldiers working as a key flanker; you can regroup and take the rest of them down with ease. That's something you won't be doing in a lot of other shooters coming out this year, and possibly next year. Playing dead is also a really cool feature. The description above gives you a perfect sense of what you will be able to pull off while playing dead. What's even better is playing dead while combining it with a trap. As the Mantel soldier begins to walk closer, you can let nature take its gory course as the solider steps on a buried grenade. Pretty cool, eh? I know some of you probably want to know more about how to exploit Mantel during combat, however that is what Day 4 of our Haze Hype will be about, along with a few more screenshots. But as promised, you can view some extra Haze screenshots below. And if you missed a day of our Haze Hype be sure to look for the button icon on the left side of your screen, which will take you to a list of our Haze coverage. ![]() ![]() ![]() HAZE ROXXOR!! |
