Har? Only apple?
If you've been feeding them apple only, they probably died from malnutrition. They need a lot more variety as well as protein and calcium. Apple does not cover everything. You should have done your research before purchasing them. Now it's not too late to correct your mistake with your remaining glider. |

QUOTE(khairizha @ Apr 15 2007, 01:25 PM) i give them apple.. Wah.. why you only feed apples? Apples cannot ever be the staple diet of sugar gliders. Many people who listen to commercial breeders about feeding only apples have lost their gliders from malnutrition. This was the thing that got me into making glider mix in the first place.that's all...last week i gave them gerber applesauce... should i bring them to the vet??.. and if i should bring it to the vet..please advise me where is the best place. Apples lack in calcium, lack in minerals for health, lack in many key vitamins a glider needs. Apple sauce has less nutrition than fresh apples.... so.... Calories 81 Carbohydrate 21 grams Dietary Fiber 4 grams Soluble Fiber Insoluble fiber Calcium 10 mg Phosphorus 10 mg Iron .25 mg Sodium 0.00 mg Potassium 159 mg Vitamin C 8 mg Vitamin A 73 IU Folate 4 mcg 10mg of calcium is super low.... A glider needs a diet high in calcium. There is no sodium in apples and every living animal needs a bit of sodium(not table salt). Apple sauce is ok as a treat but too much is bad since it is high in citric acid and vitamin C. An all round diet should have complete vitamins, fiber, carbohydrate, calcium, essential minerals, protein.... Even if you give mealworms, without a proper diet, a glider can suffer. A vet won't be able to help much since it is already long term. You can always try getting a calcium injection but then not all vets would be willing to give since there is not much info on gliders for them and an overdose can cause a glider to be sick. Change their diets and pray that they can last. If you do not change their diet, you may not see them live long and gliders can live up to 15 years. QUOTE Sugar gliders in the wild feed on eucalyptus gum, sap, insects, nectar, and honeydew (an excretory product of nectar eating insects). They will also eat bird eggs, lizards, small birds and other small prey items. This diet is pretty difficult to replicate in captivity. So a variety have food have been fed, in an attempt to somewhat mimic their natural intake and to see what makes them thrive in captivity. http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/sugargliders/a/sgfeeding.htmQUOTE Amount: http://www.sugargliders.org/gliderinfo/diets/elwin.htmFeed about a half cup a day with fresh water on the side(dish or bottle) per glider. Fruits/Vegetables - feed 2-3 daily * Frozen mixed veggies(peas, corn, carrot, green beans) * Broccoli, (cooked or raw) * Cauliflower, (cooked) * Grapes, Any color * Apples * Oranges * Pears * Melons(any kind) * Persimmons, (a treat since they are expensive, try an oriental grocer for cheaper ones) * Pinto beans, (cooked)every once in a while, not daily; very starchy * Rice, (cooked)every once in a while, not daily * Potato, (cooked or raw)every once in a while, not daily; very starchy * Sweet Potato, (cooked or raw)every once in a while, not daily; very starchy * Squash,(butternut, gooseneck, acorn) (cooked or raw) * Peaches, Apricots, Plums, Nectarines, Cherries: fruit only, not the pits. Pits and woods of these plants are poisonous. Note: Feed fresh or frozen, but check to make sure the frozen items do not have added salt. Protein (pick one daily): * Chicken, skinless is best, grilled is best but baked, nuked or boiled is fine * Steak(any red meat), well done * Pork, grilled with no fat(most pork today is pretty lean) * Nuts, not more than once a week, very fatty * Cheese, not more than once a week, very fatty * Egg, scrambled(well done) with the shell ( you can save the shells when you use eggs to cook with but nuke them before serving, many eggs in this country have Salmonella ) Supplement: You will need a calcium supplement. Elwin recommends RepCal with No Phosphorus. Sprinkle lightly over cut up food and mix well. This is very important. If you do not feed a calcium supplement, you risk your glider developing Hind Leg Paralysis or metabolic bone disease, in which the glider's body begins breaking down bones to stay alive. This can lead to a painful death if not treated, and can be prevented by supplementing adequate calcium. . QUOTE(hamster9 @ Apr 15 2007, 01:55 PM) here's Chibi...and how she sleeps... Chibi sleeps like that? Wahhh... cute. a sugar glider who thinks she's a human.... ![]() How she tells you that she wanna poop and pee? Added on April 15, 2007, 5:39 pmQuickly change their diet and get vitamin and calcium supplements to save them before another glider dies..... QUOTE(khairizha @ Apr 15 2007, 01:25 PM) i give them apple.. This is really disheartening. Who taught that it would be sufficient to feed only apple?that's all...last week i gave them gerber applesauce... should i bring them to the vet??.. and if i should bring it to the vet..please advise me where is the best place. You can get so much resources on the internet and still you are only feeding apple? It is good that they are Resting In Peace now coz free from your further torture. Please be responsible to do research before getting that "oh so cuteeEEeee" pet!!!!! Only Apple and gerber applesauce = DEATH. There has been so much information being posted on this thread that could save the 2 lives. Don't you even know that there are forumers here selling the glider mix that can be the staple food? I am lost for words...If I were you, I'll forget about keeping exotic pets. Total lost... CFP, What material you use as the wire mesh? One superb glider paradise you have there. What about the tray? What are you going to use at the bottom? This post has been edited by sangterap: Apr 15 2007, 07:06 PM |

Buying food for them is a once a month thing for me to make their mix. Every day will feed fruits available at hand
CFP: Your DIY cage is awesome! If I have a bigger space I would not mind buying one from you for my critters Speaking of critters. They kept me up all night because they were figthing again. But I think its their mating fight. because they have no wounds from any of the fights so far. Probably Rene refusing Roscoe thats why there is so much racket. |

QUOTE(khairizha @ Apr 16 2007, 12:25 PM) FYI, You left a very important thing out.... calcium supplement. As stated in the quote from the website, they also said that calcium supplement is a must. I gave my gliders mealworm, heinze cereal, fruits, applesauce...they just dun eat egg and chicken eventhough i tried to give them i dun give them apple oni..but i stated there that i gave them apple only because im trying to find the reason why they are dead..... i got my gliders since last year and they must be die earlier if i ONI GIVE APPLE . and sumore cici for sure will eat the twins if she cannot get enough nutrients rite?.. my problem now is oni that there are no more gerber babyfood in the market. i know about the mix and even try to buy it.... sang terap...thanks for the very good advise. Apples in 1 week won't cause death so you got no need to blame apples about it. If fruits, what kind of fruits have you been feeding? If you do not state, then we would not know like when you stated you give apples and applesauce.... Your gliders could be lacking of something important in their diet.... which is why the sudden death. It doesn't take a diet to kill an animal in a short while, it goes with time.... as time pass, the body would slowly break down... erm... like smoking. If you smoke 1 cig, won't die rite? But if you smoke 3 packs for a few years, your risk will rise and 1 day may drop dead..... Now, the most important thing is how are the other 2 gliders now? Are they showing such bad signs? If you feed apples, did you take out the seed? Coz the seed is very poisonous. |

QUOTE(alieamin @ Apr 16 2007, 07:43 PM) Grape seed and apple seeds.... any fruit seed is poisonous.... So if we feed grapes and apples, always take out the seed and peel the skin.... apple skin still ok lah but must wash properly but grape skin, I read somewhere that it is not good for them too. So best take precaution.Seeds from Kiwi, dragon fruit and blueberries are fine.... but other fruits with seeds like starfruit, also must take out. |

sorry crazymouse..
i dont mean to offence but i just really sad about it.. seriously don't know about the seed is very poisonous.. what i'm trying to tell is that in this week i just give apple and is there any possibility that the apple contain smtg wrong..that's all i just want to ask. because my gliders died without any sign such as weak or sick sign.. they all being active like usual but suddenly dead.. i really respect u as a very knowledge person that's y i asked u.. about the calcium...is mealworm and baby cereal not enough for calcium?.. because i think before this i was advised not to use calcium powder to gliders and i cannot remember who told me.... |

The best is stick with proven recipe. No point use the glider as guinea pig to test out what food can be taken. By the time you finish testing, not the food expire but the Sugar Glider also expired....
Very easy one....just give glider mix....and then give other proven stuff like mealworms.... |
