Parking. Is it worth upgrading to this from a late-2012 model?

But it's working fine tho. I have intentions to upgrade simply because I'm so used to the Retina display on the MacBook Pro to the point that every time I use my iMac, it feels like I'm using an ancient piece of antique by just looking at the resolution

I am not surprised that it is working fine. Apple products u can easily use till it dies before u find it too slow for ur needs.

Yup, that's why I said it has been many many things upgraded on iMac since last time especially for the Retina display. The Retina display has even upgraded more than one time till now that it has 500 nits display.

Once using Retina display, hard to use back anything non retina.

I am planning to get this.
Customization wise, still deciding whether to go for 256GB SSD instead?
For device, will chose Magic Trackpad 2 instead of Magic Mouse 2.

Hey guys, just wanna share great news. I just bought an iMac 27" 5K from Harvey Norman for RM6699. Obviously not the 2017 model ( not in store yet), but I believe this is a great deal. 0% interest some more. And added in the extra 4 years of warranty from Harvey for RM1738.

if u asked me, the late 2015 model is not worth it for its price.

Price difference: RM850 but you missed the following:
Even ignore all the spec upgrade, the model you have is having a standard HDD, it will become a serious bottleneck in terms of performance even now. All the in shop iMac does not come with the option of fusion drive or SSD for late 2015 iMac, so it is totally not recommended to buy from the shop itself but should customize it and buy from apple online store instead.

1) Skylake vs Kabe Lake - Faster and more powerful than ever, iMac is now equipped with seventh‑generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and the latest high‑performance graphics.
2) 3.2 vs 3.4 Ghz
3) Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz vs Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
4) 1TB (7200-rpm) hard drive vs 1TB Fusion Drive - Storage kicks into high gear as well, with the speedy and spacious Fusion Drive now available in standard configurations of both the 27-inch and 21.5-inch Retina models. So you can do everything you love to do on iMac. All at maximum velocity.
5) AMD Radeon R9 M380 graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory vs Radeon Pro 570 with 4GB video memory -
1.4X faster video editing/1.5X faster gaming/1.4X faster 3D graphics

6) Two Thunderbolt 2 ports vs Two Thunderbolt 3 ports - Double the speed and bandwidth of the previous generation. Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports come standard on all iMac models, each delivering up to 40 Gbps data transfer for external drives and cameras and twice the bandwidth for video and display connectivity.
7) Retina 5K display with IPS technology vs Retina 5K 5120x2880 P3 display - 43% brighter than previous model/
1billion colours/The Retina display shines even more vividly on the new iMac. With one billion colours and 500 nits of brightness, graphics leap off the screen in a whole new light.

Even rm7999 it is the same also.

Given that the drive alone it is already rm460.
So the price difference is even smaller.

Most importantly one will know how to make use of the education price discount to get even more bang out of the bucks. Many had done so.

If take rm7999, the price is only 16.25%. Given that since the last upgrade, it has been almost 1.5 years, the incentive is not a lot.

If take rm7549, it is merely 11.26%.

The incentive is way too little, not to forget, it is not even consider the drive upgrade of fusion drive is already rm460.
Of course, u may say, u can survive with HDD. but whoever has used for a machine with HDD vs SSD, one will know the difference.

For a rm6699 machine, one still need to sacrifice for the bottleneck of HDD, and given that it is now 2017, it is absolutely crazy.

Interested on the 27" too. The RM7999 base model is good enough for me.
Since I'm not going to customize much on the spec, where should I purchase then? Local store like machines or epicenter (after they have it for sale) or Online Apple Store?

Yes 27-inch base model has the most well-balanced spec against the price. More worthy than buying the 21-inch 4K one with a little extra added.

Buy from Apple online store is better.

Would you mind elaborate more upon buying online is better?

For such expensive stuff, I prefer cash and carry for peace of mind though.

Now waiting the numeric keyboard then will pull the trigger. blush.gif

So far my 27" 5K iMac is running just fantastic. Went online to OWC to purchase additional 8GB DDR3. Costs me USD60.99 plus another USD23.05 for DHL shipping. Based on exchange rate of 4.26MYR to 1USD, it's not too pricey.

Checked on 11th. Street, they sell it for RM442. And I hadn't had time to survey Low Yat Plaza shops or any other computer shops. One thing I found out was Mac memories are not the usual desktop RAMs that we can simply buy over the counter. Seeing that's the case, I didn't bother hunting everywhere and just settled for OWC. Quite a number of Mac enthusiasts recommended that shop. The other being Crucial.

crucial i saw online reviewer uses it to upgrade the ram for iMac also.

ya, how to determine which ram iMac can use like that sia?

i will probably go with 8gb ram first, and see if there is a need later then consider upgrade ownself.

OWC are great at warrant claim. No questions ask when you need replacement, the only problem with oversea purchase is OWC doesn't pay for oversea shipping, even on failed devices. in US, i have 4-5 sticks of OWC failed on me for my MacPro and they always fulfil the claim. It's lifetime warranty! Their stuffs can get a little pricy but their service is top notch.

That's right. In US, OWC is top choice for enthusiast because it's cheaper and stellar customer service. it has always been my place to go if i need anything on Mac. In Malaysia, one may have to consider shipping cost and warranty claim. Unless it's a big difference in price that warrant it, i would just go with Apple. Shipping cost and Custom are straight up hassle. Having says that, could be wrong, i don't think Apple offer lifetime warranty on sticks, so OWC has the advantage here when it comes to longevity.

It's quite easy to identify the type of iMac memories we can buy. All info is found in the top left corner of the desktop when we click on the black Apple logo. Very important to buy the same speed, latency, low voltage, unbuffered, 204-pin size and etc. The specs have to match existing RAM in the iMac. Also must buy in one pair quantity.

Ic. Since existing 8gb Apple gives is 4gb x 2, if upgrade can only buy 4gb x 2 to make it 16gb or change all to 8gb x 4 for 32gb?

Ic. Since existing 8gb Apple gives is 4gb x 2, if upgrade can only buy 4gb x 2 to make it 16gb or change all to 8gb x 4 for 32gb?
*
Both options are possible. In my case, I've opted for the former. If you have the cash though, then go for 8GB x 4. And it's highly recommended to keep the original RAMs as backup in case the newly purchased RAMs have problems.

i am thinking on the 27inch one.. planning to upgrade to i7.. the ram can i use apple ram + third party ram tgt? some ppl say will make the system crash.
btw.. any ram recommend for imac? seen it able to customise ourself.. don feel like wan get from mac.
*
Yes, you can mix original iMac RAMs with third party ones. But must make sure the memory specifications are the same. Those systems probably crashed because they didn't adhere to the specs. Once you have bought the iMac, you can check the proper memory configurations from the desktop itself and order the RAMs based on it.

I don't think it's worth spending that much tho. Spending it on the RAM would be a worthier choice, in my perspective.

add on around 900+ , i am doing installment , every month just need pay extra bit. I think the mac can use more than 5 year (my current macbook air got 4 years and still pretty good), so hope to get the highest spec lol.

if the ram can work with third party..then i go for 8gb first.. after that only upgrade myself biggrin.gif

yup, for me i think the base model of iMac 27-inch posses the greatest value for typical users.

the processor is quard core after all even it is only i5.

yup, ram should be upgraded for long run. but certainly not upgraded at apple side since the upgrade fee is so high. tongue.gif

Ic. Then it makes more sense since u are already on the highest spec and having i7 can make it real powerful for future proof since the upgrade fee is merely 10%.

Main thing is the performance difference, i7 certainly performs better but it also likely to trigger more fan run during heavy operation.

I am getting it from Apple online education store as well.

True. Imac indeed can play a lot of games with no issues given its graphic card and processing power.

Comparing to macbook, one gets more bang for the bucks just only thing is that it is not portable. But to compliment with macbook, it should be perfect.

Hmm, it's definitely not super blazing fast. Powering up took around 20 - 25 seconds. It didn't bother me though, just go toilet to relief self a bit and when I come back to the screen, it's ready. ;-)

As for installation of some other apps, if it comes from Mac Store, it's still fast. And if it's other programs e.g. VLC and Malwarebyte, slightly longer but still below one minute.

Hi! Go to macsales.com. That's the website of US-based OWC (Other World Computing). Look for iMac RAM upgrade kits. But before ordering, better know the specifications of your RAM. Your order must exactly be the same as the RAM you currently have in your iMac.

The supplied HDD is 7200rpm, so I guess it's still better than 5400. I can't complain about that.

Btw, does anyone know what MacOS program runs 5K videos? The videos carry the extension *.r3d

I also think so. It just simply makes a iMac appeared like 10 years ago desktop pc with the Super slow HDD as compared Apple ultra fast SSD.

The HDD is about 80++MB per Sec read write speed while SSD is close to 2GB per Sec.

Yes, different models of iMac have different RAM specs. For eg. the 2017 27" iMac is DDR4 2400MHz, 21.5" is 2133MHz speed.

And if you purchase the late 2015 iMac, the RAMs are DDR3 running at 1867MHz.

So, it is important you find out the RAM in your iMac before upgrading RAMs.

It's only half fine. To get the complete picture and full specs, click on the Apple logo on top left corner. Go to 'About this Mac'. Next, click on 'Memory'.

In that window, you'll see a small print "Memory upgrade instructions" or something like that, I can't remember clearly. <I'm on my Windows laptop currently>. Click on that small print. It will bring you to a special page that lists out exactly the RAM specs you need for your iMac. It is more detail than just "DDR4 2400MHz". Once you have that full info, then go to Macsales.com and make the purchase based on that.

<<But actually, having said all that, Macsales.com website is so good that all you really need to do is just to select you have a 2017 27" iMac 3.2GHz (for example) and it will point you in the right direction for which RAM to recommend.>> Nonetheless though, I'd still advise you to know your way around your own iMac machine and do those steps that I've suggested above.

Good luck! :-)

Oh, you ordered from Apple Malaysia online? When is it arriving?

Yeah, I agree you can upgrade memory later on after you have had time to play with your iMac first. It's already a pretty powerful machine, and better than my late 2015 version.

better to get it later. 8gb ram maybe sufficient for most ppl.

plus 2017, ssd is a lot faster, kabe lake processor is faster, graphic card is better, u should have a much better and snappier experience than any previous models.

Hi,

Since the High Sierra Beta is out today and I am wondering whether I should upgrade to High Sierra for my new iMac to come today or next Monday. Since the new feature is the Apple File System, would it be better to install the beta now rather than wait for the final version?

beta version is still under testing, it may have compatibility issue. If you do not want it to affect your work, better to wait for the official release.

Hi,

Since the High Sierra Beta is out today and I am wondering whether I should upgrade to High Sierra for my new iMac to come today or next Monday. Since the new feature is the Apple File System, would it be better to install the beta now rather than wait for the final version?
*
Heavens no, avoid installing beta versions into your brand new iMac. I'm not doing it. Will just wait for official release of High Sierra. It won't be long now.

Go to Applications/Utilities and open Activity Monitor. Check out the memory tab and find out exactly how your iMac is using your RAM. Really consumes 7GB of memory?

Only those with 27" iMac can easily upgrade RAM. So I don't know how many will join you to bulk order. In my case, you know I've already upgraded. :-)

Dun understand your problem. The ram comes in pairs. 4+4 GB is the original configuration. How come you only have one single 8GB?

lol..is ok.. just share my experience on ram upgrade

if using different size of ram, rmb put the same size closest.

i see some website saying it should put as 1010 , but i think iMac 2017 change the slot, so make sure is putting as 1100 .. otherwise the mac can't on.

anything if got problem on ram upgrade.. can ask me.. i try my best to help smile.gif

I understand now. Yeah, you could be right. My ram upgrades are for my 2015 iMac and I've check multiple YouTube videos on the same models. It did not occur to me the 2017 models would be different memory banks configuration.

It will not, unless u have space constraint. Even a lot of external monitor is 24-inch and above nowadays.

Agreed, and the price different btw high end 21.5" (w upgrade 16GB ram) beginning model 27 pricing not really far away.

My consideration is:
Buy high end 21.5" with upgrade 16GB ram
(Because 21.5 model very difficult DIY upgrade RAM)

Or

Buy entry model 27" and upgrade the RAM in future.

definitely entry model 27" and upgrade ram later.

if u do ram upgrade on 21" iMac the price will be as close as to 27" iMac already.
not worth it. plus 27" u get a lot of extra comparing to 21".

What?! Upgrade RAM from Apple site? A big no-no. For another 8GB, you must add RM920. I bought my 8GB RAM for only RM350 plus online.

That's exactly one of the reasons why I opted for the 27" 5K iMac, just so I can easily install my own RAM upgrade. I'd recommend that to you.

I bought the highest end model iMac 27" 5K 2017. The graphics card is indeed a big difference from the previous model. As for the RAM, you can upgrade by buying Kingston Value RAM DDR4-2400. It works perfectly fine (so far).

Yes, shop definitely does not have customised options available.

So most ppl do not buy iMac from store but order online especially due to the choice of storage. biggrin.gif

order online directly from Apple online has tons of advantages for example it comes with 14 days replacement and refund policies, any prob can do replacement or refund, very seamless and no shipping charge involved.

The delivery from Apple online store is also very fast.

I wanted it right away so purchased it from store. Maybe the next round I will try buying from Apple Store. The 256GB SSD is a better option for me as I don't really use 2TB of storage anyways.

Yes, I would opt for full ssd as the performance of the hybrid drive is still not comparable.

Yes, 256gb or 512gb ssd should be good for most, in any case, should be able to maximum the performance for the iMac. The 2017 iMac has updated ssd which the read/write speed is even faster than the MacBook Pro.

There's no target display mode for 5K iMac's even until now. I used to have a 2016 MBP non touch bar and yes, it's very nice especially the wonderful display which is much better than the 2015 model.

Nice. Ur selection is almost same as my wish too. If me I will also get the 512ssd for base model iMac.
And I won't go for Magic Mouse but I will go with magic touchpad also. The feeling is damn solid than gen 1 touchpad.

u have more than 14 days to return. tongue.gif Just return it if u prefer MacBook Pro. thumbsup.gif

if not wrong, the target display mode is becos of Intel. Not apple's fault.

yup, 2016 onwards the screen and form factor are really a lot more awesome than the 2015 one. tongue.gif

Actually the customs ppl do, but I tell them I bring in to SG for service. And I'm using my Malaysia Apple ID to purchase the Macs so on the box it mentioned "For Apple Malaysia SDN BHD", further more inside the iMac has MCMC paperwork, and I opened the box make it look like used and the custom buy my story😀

My iMac is 1TB fusion drive, I didn't upgrade the specs.

The space between the keys is the same, but I always use the numeric key and the keyboard look nicer that's the reason I upgraded it. 😝

Is a powerful machine, even work better than the my MacBook Pro with touch bar. But recently I'm running an AI file with 3GB size... the read and loading is very slow... I'm thinking is because of ram and HDD.

That, I noticed. Once in a while, the Lightroom in my 5K iMac lags but more often than when I run it on my 2014 MacBook Pro. Dunno why though...

Suggest to get the 512gb ssd, if u buy the highest end 27" inch model which already comes with amd Radeon 580 8gb ram and 2TB fusion drive. Upgrade to 512gb will pay lesser.

I actually find that the highest end model gives better bang for bucks for the extra paid.

Depending on ur usage I think. The Radeon 580 is quite capable card that positions in between 1060 and 1070 graphic cards.

Apple has specifically spelled out the RAM type supported for iMac. As long as it is same specification, no matter what brand it should work.
Normally RAM does not work well when it come to the fact that they are of different specifications. I think it is the reason why it does not work, you should just stick to same specifications instead.

Yes, upgraded to High Sierra on my 2016 iMac. Was using it the past two days over the weekend for Word, YouTube, Twitter, and usual stuff. But I didn’t experience any lag. Quite happy with High Sierra at the moment.

Not sure I was running too many applications at one time but if there's one thing that I find consistent is the time it takes for Safari to open websites. Takes slightly longer than usual.

Hi! Can anyone help me out?

I bought a WD Passport HDD 1TB to designate it as a Time Machine backup. But since it was NTFS, I used Disk Utility to Erase and Partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. And that's where I got stuck. I couldn't even erase it and got an error message instead. A screenshot is provided below.

What did I do wrong? Is Disk Utility not working anymore in High Sierra?

Same here

I’m just waiting for a specrefresh other than the 2017 model.

But having said that, if I use 5k resolution monitor to watch normal 1920x1080 media such as movies. Does it scale badly on screen?

Have anyone tried windows bootcamp gaming on on 27” model? With the graphics card, I’m expecting medium settings, but do you any of you seeing any issues with it?

IF they add in new hardware features like what they did for MacBook Pro, it is possible for price hike.

One thing they must really do is to trim the bezel of the display, it is simply too thick for its look?

Do you guys think besides the SST, the new model price will be higher?
I am going to customize it 256 SSD then numeric keyboard and add an trackpad. Budget just nice for now at 6.5k

actually the current price of the iMac is considered cheapest for the specs.

but if they redesign like the new macbook pro, it will certainly cost more than the current.

That's what I am thinking too.
refresh model with i8 or i9 or more cores not really a concern for me
but only the design. But looking at imac pro I don't think they will redesign it any sooner to make imac pro look outdated

I am thinking if I should get the 27 inch instead but besides considering the budget also does 27 inch too big for my desk plus I only do vid & photo editting for hobby seem to be overkill

yup, indeed. if they redesign the iMac, they will definitely redesign the iMac Pro as well.

I really hope they will redesign soon (although the chance is really slim). The current bezel of the iMac is just too thick. the design is used since 2012. cool2.gif

i think u should go for 27-inch, because it is more value for money even the base model than 21-inch one.

Not to forget 27-inch have 4 memory slots and they are user accessible. Can easily drop in more memory in future.

laptop is a must for mobility, if you spent a lot of time in your desk at home, desktop is more preferred

why i choose imac 21.5 4k

1. lazada crazy price almost 50% discount from 6k to 3k
2. for me 21.5 not too big not too small
3. 4k resolution is really superb when you surfing
4. 21.5 much more easily for your eyes to focus
5. im not on gaming person
