QUOTE(usermode @ Mar 1 2009, 04:16 AM)
i cant ID algae good with just pic but tat looks like brown algae. how long the tank been setted up? if it;s a new tank, it;s normal. brown algae is a diatom. ottos and yamato will be happy to help u clear em.

brown algae also shows that u have lack of lights if the tank is not new.

lack of lights = brown algae.
too much lights = green algae/GSA.

reducing ur light is a bad move IMO if it;s brown algae. instead, u might need more light power (not necessarily longer).

IME, every aquarist will have their fair chance fighting with algae. bear in mind combatting algae isnt a war that can be won in a day or 2. it might takes few days up to weeks to win.

suck up as much as you can during WC, control your lighting,co2 and ferts schedule, and let ur algae crew clean the area that you cant reach. it;s just a matter of time they'll get clear.

btw, brown algae for a new tank, normally will take less than a week to be cleared with help of ottos and yamatos. if u cant win within that time, then u need to take more drastic action. tongue.gif

those suggestion is based on what i think i saw. as i siad, im not good ID algae with pic but if it;s brown algae (looks like it), u may try the above solution. at least it works for me.

thanks for ur reply...

currently i have 24w lighting for my 6.6 gallon tank... not sure if dat's sufficient or not... perhaps i should bump it up to 32w...

i did added amano shrimps but they committed suicide... an hour ago i jz noticed my SAE also jumped out from the tank... cry.gif cry.gif

my otos are hardworking folks though... both of them seems huge, fat and well fed... lolz... perhaps i should get some more otos to combat these algae...

my previous amano shrimps suicide case could be due to overdose of fertilizers... silly mistake... doh.gif

guys, can i ask some silly question please?

1.) what is otos?

2.) what does cherry shrimps do in the tank? to beautify the tank or helps in terms of plant growing or?

3.) my tank is relatively small, only 30cm x 20cm x 13cm, with about 10 guppies in it now and a plant, can i add shrimps into it if i want?

thanks!
*
1) otocinclus / otos... is a type of dwarf catfish which mainly feeds on algae....

user posted image

http://www.otocinclus.com/

2) they are great cleaning crew... cleaning up uneaten fish food sank to the bottom... this controls the ammonia level in da water...

3) yeap... guppies dont seem to be a threat for shrimps.... as long as the fish u have is non-aggressive type and its mouth couldnt fit a shrimp inside, its ok i guess....

yes. And No.

If you want to breed those $$ CRS to hundreds and hundreds of em Like what pinchboyz is doing, then Having CRS only is advisable.

If it's just for the fun of it, and small side breeding as you go, It's all fine.
Cherries, Amanos and CRS are different genera altogether.. =D
Amanos may be a little fierce on weak or young CRS and RCS though.. Even worst I saw My amano Attacking one of my dizzy fishes.. ferocious eh? Against Algae too =D

About your brown Algae, 6++ Otto's would do the job real good.

Drew
*
now i have a crew of 4 otos... algae level decreased a little only.... hopefully it will start disappearing by this week....

most probably i plan to breed for fun only... not 100+ of them... sweat.gif

if this time experimental works out well, might create another tank mainly for breeding... hehehe.... tongue.gif tongue.gif

if my otos are working well and sufficient enough, i dont think will add amanos as they grow pretty huge... once i had 1 almost 3 times the size of my cherry shrimp... sweat.gif

Electricity is a difference of adding rm 200 into whatever I already am consuming for electric lol.

The aircond in there is the most worth it equipment I have spent on. Rather than buying many many fans or many many chillers, one 1hp aircond for all 7 tanks .. And Even I get comfort when working on the tanks  brows.gif  brows.gif

Total amount spent?? If I count arr.. Cannot sleeep lorr.. so don't ask me..

Drew

very true.... maintaining ambient temperature better than using many chiller for so many tanks....

Out of topic..

Catacombs, where's your lcoation. May want PA system ahhaha!

And I really have to do something about this room soon enough.. It still looks like a toilet.. BUT IMPROVISED!!!
I look at efficiency and practicality rather than Looks.. When people ask, why a toilet.
1: It's a small room therefore a/c doesn't have to run fast.
2: Water change made easy.. VERY VERY EASY! no more back ache tongue.gif
3: Have you ever seen an aquarist fell asleep in there? AHAHHA
Drew
*
yeap yeap... the most direct advantage i see from it is very very easy water change... jz pump out the water and let it flow into the jamban.... rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

PA system thing, ugpm... smile.gif

edit:other than some ordinary plants, fishes, sands, decorations, what else more i should get for myself?
do i need something like anti-chlorine?or any supplements?
    hows the lightning should be?
what to do to avoid algea?
is it necessary to do the co2 supplier?
    thanks
*
what i learn from venturing into planted tanks is, go step by step and not to hurry....

first step... get a suitable size aquarium... basic thumb rule, the bigger the better... coz water parameter will more stable... disadvantage, cost for everything will be multiplied...
next get a suitable water filter for the size of ur tank... normally tanks below 1.5ft recommended to use HOB filter... 2ft above need canister filter.... external sump also can be used but less popular.... canister filter or external sump is good because it allows beneficial bacteria population...
substrate... there are many to choose from.... me basically prefer ADA amazonia II... due to limited budget, i had holland sand at the bottom as replacement to ADA powersand.... other macro nutrient also needed, but this very much depends on ur budget and what kinda aquascaping level u looking for.... (low tech or high tech)
lights... honestly i forgot the "watts per gallon" rule... lolz... but what i'm having for my 6.6gallon tank is 24w of lighting, which does not seem enough for hard-to-grow plants such as glosso... make sure lighting period daily is around 6-8 hours... more lighting period will cause algae bloom...
co2 supply is recommended if u want ur plants to grow well... u can do without them, but lighting wattage need to reduce abit, fertilization reduced, water change more often, etc... basically u slowing down the plants growth....

fauna/plants... which to choose and where to place them... what i can say is, google for more planted tank photos and get an idea on how u wants ur tank to be... of coz different plants has different requirement, do search around for their information (here is a good source: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/myplants/ )

try not to add any fish during ur initial setup... let it run for at least 1 week... slowly start introducing algae eaters (otocinclus, sae, etc.) to combat initial algae bloom... after a week or so only decide what fish to add in.... in aquascaping, the main character is plants and the scape, not the fish... fish are jz additions... without them will still be fine....

also,is that possible to go without filters?
since my aquarium is pretty small(17 x 17 x 32)cm
*
yes u can run ur tank filterless.... only if u willing to do water change twice a week...

i tried dat in my pico tank housing only my betta... no filter, no co2, no fert... only holland sand as substrate... grows slowly but appears healthy... in the end it grew too large for my pico tank, i moved it to my main nano tank... biggrin.gif

filterless tank only recommended for really small tanks where u cant even house the smallest filter... not really recommended unless u prepare for failure or really going it for low cost low tech tank...
