QUOTE(tenchi0205 @ Feb 10 2009, 07:12 PM) soil is better or sand is better for planted tank? whoa... 4 years without water change and ur plants still growing well... it is the larger the tank is, the easier it is to control the water parameter, the easier it is to grow plants??...got any specific which plant for which type of ground use in the tank? (soil or sand) that glosso stone i will submerged same level with the sand and let them grow around...hope its will work out fine... when i buy the tank its come together with the light source...next time i take a photo of the light source see suitable or not... as for CO2...i plan to DIY this coming weekend if time allow me to do so... I will take out the air pump from this tank as well since i see some sifu said planted tank not suitable to put air pump... ![]() gf said me lazy ppl i noticed some algae building up around some sunken uneater fish food in my low tech pico tank... currently i'm using it to house my betta... did water change and sucked out those algae'ed uneaten food... my betta seems to be crazy swimming left n right... |

QUOTE(playerseeker @ Feb 10 2009, 09:58 PM) okay...i cannot tahan and i went to buy yeast, baking soda and sugar right after my work.. ur vacuum tube too long adi... try shorten it as it will take less time to get it pressurized...and here are my DIY Yeast CO2... please give comment...i'm eager to see bubbles to come out from the airstone..but i guess i need to wait around 1 hour?? i used 500g of sugar...used my mum's measure cup to measure...it's around 2 and 1/4 cup of sugar..plus 1/2 teaspoon of yeast and baking soda... as of warm water...i went to my bath room..on the heater to max....and i collect the water..it quite warm tho...is tat okay??? i just shake it upside down to mixture the ingredient and i notice there is a layer of unmixed sugar at the bottom of the bottle... so sifu sifu sekalian....it my way to DIY correct?? [attachmentid=797578] will the tube too long? [attachmentid=797582] the ingredient tat i used [attachmentid=797583] where i place my DIY CO2 bottle.. edited: It's working...bubbles are coming out!!! i'm so happy.....but airstone creates bigger bubbles....those bubbles didnt manage to break before reaching the surface...so sifu sifu sekalian...will CO2 still able to dissolve inside the water?? ohya, dun use air stone... use proper co2 diffuser.... even my diffuser diffuse the co2 not very effectively... lucky there are some plants growing around it which helps the bigger bubble to diffuse even smaller.... QUOTE(tenchi0205 @ Feb 10 2009, 10:51 PM) how come i din see this type of co2 diffuser bell before geh??... QUOTE(coldfusionpower @ Feb 10 2009, 10:52 PM) ditch the big sands ... get atleast holland sand or amazonia II ... the glosso is a foreground plant .. after get the soil, remove the glosso from the rock , cut the glosso links to one ... or one small patches. plant the root inside the soil and use toothpick to make from floating. and yes .. like usermode said .. glosso is a high light plant . it will need HIGH wattage lights to started rooting .. once its root.. u will having headache trimming it up .. ahaha glosso also will need CO2 yea... glosso need high lighting... my 5.5 gallon tank with 24w lighting also insufficient... my glosso growing upwards instead of horizontally... they are about 1 inch tall already... holland sand about rm35 for 5/10kg .. cant remember .. a 9litre of amazonia II around rm80-90 and rm130-140 for powder remove any fauna until the tank is fully cycled. airpump not needed ... whats with the bubble stone ?? ohya, i lost 2 rasboras today... no idea why they sudently swim terbalik.... |

QUOTE(usermode @ Feb 11 2009, 12:56 AM) ph swings? temperature swings rapidly? ammonia spike? co2 overdose kaw kaw? if these are okay, then i will keep my eyes on the others for any symptom of disease in case got infections. if there's any then move them to quarantine/hospital tank a.s.a.p (to treat or to let it die there instead in ur main tank). if all is okay also, then just assume it's already their "time" to go. just buy a new one temperature remains between 24~27oC.... ph swing or ammonia spike not sure as i dont have tester... but previously i didnt do anything special to the tank since the last water change last friday.... saturday planted some glosso... sunday poured in the rasboras...nope, didnt quarantine them... they sunk and got stuck in between the plants... i need to dig them out to get their carcass out... my 5 other rasboras are doing fine... i guess... the only thing i suspect is my serpae tetra and silvertip tetra attacked them... coz i've seen them chasing after my rasboras occasionally... |

yeap... i do notice dat as well... but because the 4 tetras are my surviving few from my previous setup, i couldnt jz throw them into the longkang... hence i have to put them in.... yea they are pretty aggressive, nipping each other... i guess dats why my rasboras get stressed out...
and now i couldnt catch them as i've heavily planted my tank ready... put my fishing net in and chase them around, i'll uproot my plants... dun worry, my betta is in another pico tank... |

QUOTE(playerseeker @ Feb 12 2009, 09:55 PM) hey guys...... 1. can jz shake the bottle with cap closed... of coz place the bottle below the height of ur tank... best to have check valve to prevent water seeping into the yeast mixture or vice versa.... i have 2 questions to ask 1. today after work came back i saw little bubble coming out from the DIY CO2..so i opened the cap and i shake it..by covering the bottle opening with my palm and it came out alot of bubbles.....it's like u shake a bottle of coca cola and bubbles all came out...will my yeast followed those bubbles out??do i need to add yeast?? 2. i tied my java moss with only one nylon string and it's at the center...so now both sides are floating....do i need to tie the both side as well or leave it there?? can those both side grow?? edited: add questions 3. now i'm using DIY CO2 and the bubbles keep on coming out....so this weekend i'm going to buy a diffuser to replace the temporary airstone...but i read u guys normally set the bubbles to 2bps or 1bps....can DIY CO2 done tat?? i wonder if control like this the bottle can letup or not because of the gas tak sempat come out?? let say if no nid use teh counter and just let it come out like this...i wonder can poison the water or not coz the bubbles is 24/7 coming out and i photoperiod from 7pm to 7am only..(the time i back from work-sleep-work)... actually it is not recommended to shake ur mixture even it produce more co2 bubble... when it starts to build up bubbles on the yeast mixture surface, means ur co2 supply is stable and good.... this will last u a week or 2, depends on yeast-sugar ratio... 2. best to tie ur moss with all sides with contact to ur wood/rock.... if u keep it floating around, it will grow, but not grab hold of the wood.... one more thing... when u tie ur moss onto the wood, make sure the moss layer is as thin as possible... if it is think, lower portion couldnt get light source, turns dark green and dies without grab hold onto the wood... ur moss will continue to float around... 3. nope... diy co2 not recommended to restrict the bps... jz let it be... for the first few days notice the changes in ur fauna character... if they kept swimming on top level, means they are running out of oxygen... next time add more abit sugar instead of yeast... (change the sugar-yeast ratio)... another method of controlling co2 level in ur tank is by creating water ripple... the more ripple it is, the faster co2 escapes from the water... jz my 2 cents... correct me if wrong.. |

QUOTE(playerseeker @ Feb 13 2009, 11:53 PM) ouh..good good...tmr i'll be going to the fish shop near new world, penang......1st time going there and going to see whether got alot of variety or not....and also...compare the pricing with the LFS near my house..coz LFS near my house will be the one i'll be visiting more often than there u mean CTY fish shop??... yeah its kinda huge fish shop... but the variety of plants quite limited as well.... i got my cheap analog thermometer from there for rm2.90 if not mistaken.... happy hunting...oh btw...u guys remember the "lalang-kind-of plant" ? one of the forumers meantioned before dun buy that plant because it is not a water plant and will die eventually?? after i introduce CO2 to my tank for one night, i saw that "lalang" actually producing bubbles on their leaves........so it's growing or not growing?? those leaves are slowly turning yellow tho... wat's the verdict sifu sekalian?? if nto growing..i'm going to take out and throw and replace it with java moss...coz currently the "lalang" plant is tied to the DW with the hanging Java moss of mine..... normally aquatic plants are much softer and couldnt stand upright once it is out of water... those lalang type, if u feel its rigid most probably not aquatic plants... non-aquatic plants has heavy roots and will die 1 or 2 months later.... plants producing oxygen bubbles are called pearling (in aquascaping term).... normally happen in riccia plants... for others is quite rare, unless u have sufficient amount of light and co2.... sample of pearling riccia... ![]() |

QUOTE(playerseeker @ Feb 14 2009, 06:41 PM) here's new pic of my 1.5ft tank.... a HOB filter this size will do... any brand is ok coz it depends on flow rate... me myself dunno the specific flow rate... but agak-agak this size filter da flow rate should be sufficient for ur tank... price is approx rm2x....i know i know the internal filter is making the temperature very high....30c.... i'll only have the budget in next 2 weeks (masuk gaji) and will buy a HOB filter... can anyone introduce a suitable HOB filter for my tank?? 18" x 8" x 8" my budget is around rm 40 for the filter... someone please tell me my plant stil can survive with the temp and only with holland sand... [attachmentid=803059] ![]() i'm more concern for ur substrate... holland sand has minimal fert available for plants.... but growing low tech plants should be no problem... if possible, buy 1 ADA bacter ball and bury it under ur substrate... bacterball adds bacteria growth which helps gives more nitrate and nitrite for ur plants.... another way to control ur water temperature is by adding a PC fan blowing the water surface to agitate the ripple.... this helps decreases temperature by 2-3oC... downside is, water evaporates much quicker... u'll need to top up water everyday if u dont wanna see water gushing down from ur HOB filter.... ![]() |

QUOTE(nezumitaro @ Feb 16 2009, 09:34 AM) difficult to tell if a 2week tank is stable. you will need to get a Ph tester to check ur Ph level. also how about ur plants? all heatlhy growing? if all your plants growing healthy then u can put in yamato. plants all growing very well... minor algae build up but no worries, purposely trigger it to feed my otos.... lolz...i added some cheap ghost shrimp to test water.... so far so good... no one jumped out from the tank... i guess few days later only go hunt for nice shrimps, after another water change soon... is it ok to mix ghost shrimps n amano shrimps together??... ghost shrimp not pretty at all...
