Read people. Read.

RRP of D40 = USD599
RRP of D40x = USD799

It's not a D40 replacement. And just in case the price wasn't clear enough, taken from the very first link in the thread:
QUOTE
Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the D40X, a new digital SLR incorporating a 10.2-megapixel CCD. The D40X is scheduled to launch worldwide at March 22, 2007 (TBD) and is a sister model to the D40, which has a 6.1-megapixel CCD.

oh boy... nikon's marketing strategy? they could have just included the 10MP and iso100 in d40.. considering it was just about half a year ago since d40 was released...

i'm glad i didnt buy a d40 back then. otherwise i would either be banging my head on my d40 tongue.gif or smashing my d40 right now tongue.gif

i found out something:
"Some of the D40X's major improvements include an even longer-lasting battery that allows up to 520 images* per charge (470 images* for the D40)..."

are u sure its March 22? Nikon Malaysia website states that it will be on 29.
"The D40X is scheduled to launch worldwide at March 29, 2007 and is a sister model to the D40, which has a 6.1-megapixel CCD..."

i just bought my d40 around 3 weeks ago doh.gif

i heard this d40x is released because it is the 6.1 megapixel sensor is running out of stock

d40 and d40x not much difference, and most of them who got d40 means they just got it recently only..to those who want to bang their d40, means they don't value their camera
or just simply talking nonsense because they don't have a d40

But the salesman has a point.

The D40 is a TRUE budget camera.

Cannot autofocus with the RM3xx Nikkor 50mm F1.8D (the lens EVERY Nikon user has.)

The D40 is meant to be a dSLR when you're really broke. You will join others in selling this off after 3 months (or when you have money) when you discover you can't use the great Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro or Nikkor 50mm F1.8D on autofocus. In other words, the D40 is handicapped in the dark.

If you ask me, they should stop trying to cash in on the n00bs who go "WAH 10 megapixels!" and work on a AF-S version of the Nikkor 50mm F1.8D.

Those n00bs will fund the development of better cameras higher up in the range. So i say take their monies smile.gif

I'm pretty sure they'll move their primes to AF-S sooner or later...

10 MP and 6MP has no difference in image quality.
"Slightly higher resolution: D40x images are 3,872 pixels wide versus 3,008 pixels wide in the D40. [paying extra USD 200 for 800 pixels wide?]

So what? Like square footage, megapixels is multiplying image height times image width, so this minor increase looks impressive when multiplied out to 10 MP from the D40's 6MP.

This is only significant if you're printing larger than 13 x 19" (30 x 50 cm) and larger, and even then, not very significant. I've seen 4 x 5 foot prints made from the 6MP D50 which looked spectacular; it's all about knowing what you're doing to get a sharp image." -kenrockwell.com-

lower ISO = a step backward. the reason for ISO 100 is because a 10MP sensor gets noisier at ISO 200.

What Nikon doesn't tell you: "Slower 1/200 flash sync, down from the excellent 1/500 of the D40. This reduces flash range outdoors, makes it difficult to get sharp flash shots of sports action, and reduces battery life with flash." -kenrockwell.com-

Truly great lens = Nikkor 18-200 VR, and it works with the D40 excellently.

the way i see it, ppl go for D40 bcoz they choose or rather compromised with wat D40 offer (price..features...) , if this is the case , why bother D40x has something extra/better . same noise we will hear if they announce D60 or D45...D55...D50s...D70x...D80z....

too much of the " should have...." or "Cha Zhai..."..

just my 2cents. don't boom me.

to put it bluntly: D40x is to compete directly with the Canon Digital Rebel XTi (EOS 400D) in terms of specifications.

"Nikon probably added these needless pixels to the D40x to compete with the Canon Rebel XTi on banner specifications that impress innocent people, but do nothing to improve the pictures or usability. Camera performance has little to nothing to do with megapixels. I also own a Canon Rebel XTi, and I hate using it compared to my D40."
-kenrockwell.com-

D40 for ppl who knows what they are doing.

D40x for ppl who don't. (and don't mind paying more)

D40 does exactly what D40x does for real life photography. D40 probably does better! A higher res sensor is noisier, hence ISO 100 is introduced. U lose 1/500 flash sync speed(and get a 1/200). U get 3FPS(from 2.5) but u'll probably not notice since if u shoot sports u'll be using Canon.

Note: i'm comparing these only, not D200 or bla bla bla.
Note2: This is all speculation until a unit is properly tested. =)

true enough. well , soon all photography magazines will give their comments and there is always a way for nikon to sell IT exclusively.

Added on March 8, 2007, 12:40 amfrom Nikon.com.my :

While maintaining the compact size and portability of the D40 camera body, the D40X produces even more outstanding, detailed pictures thanks to its 10.2-megapixel CCD and cutting-edge digital technologies. Its resolution power makes it easy for users to print up very large sizes or crop aggressively without losing any fine details.

The D40X is loaded with everything you need for truly amazing images: a 10.2-megapixel CCD, Nikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II, an improved Image Processing Engine and superb Auto White Balnce. Together with a world-famous Nikkor lens, these features combine to ensure perfect exposure, refined details and natural, vivid colors.

from what i see here... not many people know what they are talking about.
it's all cut and paste.

i would prefer it if it's your own opinion rather than some fancy reviewer's.

4x5 foot banner using a 6MP camera and it looks good? that means you haven't seen a really good 4x5 foot banner before and i pity you. (wonder why professionals use the large formats or the 40MP cameras?)

LOL! almost bought a D40 last week.. luckily was patient enough..
It's either I buy a D40(hope price drops) or D40x hehe...
Anyone care to share their views? I am using the old canon A-1 SLR, so not familiar with DSLR yet. Considering D80 too, please advice. Budget below 4k.

It would be rather n00b to say that because a model is newer, it is better.

Just like when you carry a dSLR around, and someone asks "how many megapixels is that?" and you immediately have an impression of the person's camera knowledge.

I'd rather have the D50's AF screw focus or a second hand D70 than the D40's 2.5" screen. Second hand D70 can be got for RM2000.

But if you insist on budget and firsthand (and Nikon), get a D40. You may or may not find the lens limitation soon enough and want to upgrade; then you'd be glad you didn't pay more for the D40x.

If you're on a budget but don't mind other brands, the Canon 350D is a steal, and the Olympus E500 with twin lenses is great (which should drop even more with the CCD-shift+Live View-enabled E410 and E510 coming out soon).

It will eventually become cheaper of course. After few weeks of selling you will see some shops start throwing price around already, those who wanna go get the D40x can start doing they survey today brows.gif

D40 buyers sure abit boh song one ... they can say "I won't go as low as ISO100" or "I dun need 10MP". Look, for Rm600+ more you can get a 10MP Nikon camera today, or JUMP to Canon ... the EOS 400D with DIGIC II and can use ALL Canon lenses brows.gif

RRP of D40 = USD599
RRP of D40x = USD799

It's not a D40 replacement. And just in case the price wasn't clear enough, taken from the very first link in the thread:

Fine ... it's Nikon's own way of saying "Oops ... so here's the new model we're talking about and what you guys HOPED to be in the D40 - the all new D40x!!"

If you ask me, they should stop trying to cash in on the n00bs who go "WAH 10 megapixels!" and work on a AF-S version of the Nikkor 50mm F1.8D.
*
They have to cash in on the noobs, their blood is sweeter and they are the ones most willing to spend spend and spend and if you notice, they are the one taking the slow step up, buying body after body, lens after lens and buying more as they move up the learning curve.

Now that is MONEY to big companies like Nikon! Who cares if some lenses become AF-S or not, I make good money elsewhere! laugh.gif

Quick general focus, then manually adjust to perfection. With ring type AF-S this is so sweet.

Seriously, I cannot predict what Nikon does sometimes. I kena hit by the Nikon D70s announcement last time when I was still selling cameras. Customer came back and screw me up telling I 'conned' him into buying the D70 weeks before the D70s came out, worst thing is ... he's got money and dun mind waiting for a better model to come out and he accused me of cheating him.

In the end, I had to dig out 'bad things' about a camera that I have not even seen myself to convince that the D70 was a better buy ... sigh ...

Camera models are designed and conceived months before they finally announce it and I really dun understand why would Nikon push out the 6MP version when the 10MP is well on the way UNLESS there is a major problem with the D40. Still, it won't justify changing the model to 'D40x'. So for those of you who think that 'I dun need 10MP' then you've made your cash worth, use your camera to the max, you've worked hard for it so be the best you can ... after all it's not about Nikon or Canon, it's about photography.

That very right Shiinkuro, its the photographer, not the camera. There is absolutely NOTHING (okok, u can print nicer BIG posters and shoot an additional half a frame per sec) a D40x can do that a D40 can't, so dun feel bad about ur purchase. In fact, feel good that u've saved USD200. Would u want a ~28% more real resolution (which u'll never notice until u start printing posters or billboards) for a whopping RM700 (at our current rate) more? In more fact, there are things u probably can do with a D40 than a D40x.

BTW.. ISO 100 in the D40x has the same noise as ISO 200 in the D40. Hence the reason why there is no ISO 100 in the D40 in the 1st place.

Wan an upgrade? 18-200 VR (note: ur 18-55 is already superb). SB-400 for indoor shots of people. Next upgrade? D200. Skip the rest.

its different in pricing, so whats there to complain? if nikon named it d60 or sth else, i'm sure it won't raise as much flak. in the end both are 2 different cams

bbtat: I'm not. Just read up by my fav pro and i happen to agree with those parts 100%. He's already tried the prototypes. Loved it. But still prefers the D40.

Wifi_One: you're welcome. my suggestion is that u save for a 18-200mm VR. ur 18-55mm is a great lens. dun let the cheap price fool u. and its light and fun. bigger lenses add weight and makes ur weightless d40 not so fun =P

18-200 VR is sharp. U'll never see the difference with a 18-135 unless u blow it up real big (print posters) or ur more interested in lab tests than photography. 18-200 has VR. That means hand held great shots all (most of) the time. try that with a 18-135 w/o VR.
P.s. That means u'll never miss another shot due to 'no tripod' or 'can't get clear pic'. =P

and 18-200 VR means u'll probably only carry 1 lens everywhere u go for all ur needs. Say goodbye to big bulky 'photographers' bags and ur tripod. u dun need them.

Sinister: U R right! So do u wanna pay USD200 for the difference between good and good? =P

BTW, D40x prints great 8 foot (yes, thats 8 FOOT) posters. =P With the kit lens!! 18-55mm!!

Prices: "It comes as a body-only (about $729) , or kitted with the excellent 18-55mm lens (about $799), or kitted with both the 18-55mm and new 55-200mm VR lenses (about $999)" -kenrockwell.com-

That is NOT cheap... >.<

Because they spend all day, every day shooting with it (and not worrying about how it works in a lab, as in test lab shots). Its so light that a normal dSLR user will feel like he's holding a compact! Its sharp and works well (i din wanna mention the Canon kit lens but Shinchan.. u did! xD).

Its a KIT lens, therefore it'll come with ur D40, and at the prices it is, its more like free. lol. (And i STILL CAN'T AFFORD IT T_T)

QUOTE(albnok @ Mar 7 2007, 11:34 PM)

*
i agree with albnok
nikon users without having the chance to use nikkor 50mm f1.8 autofocus is really wasted....this lense is super sharp....

SB400 is a more basic type of flash where SB600 is a more complicated type. the question will be, do you need it to be a very advance type of flash?

see it like a mobile phone... do you need 3G phone? or your usage of the phone is limited to phone call and sms only? don't even mms... then why bother getting a 3G, pda type of phone?

that is what the SB400 does. it basically flash. thats all... nothing much. the power output it lower than the higher model and the function is limited... it just flash... if that is what you are looking for, then it is a flash for u. and for those who said SB400 is nothing... i think it is a very stupid statement to make.

Seriously the maggi cup is working. I used my cool2.gif cool2.gif damm rich friend's 30D speedlite580ex and maggi cup shoot indoor photos. At that time the enviroment is very dark, must use flash, but direct flash spoil the photos, cause the subject face look like frighten and look shininng if he/she have a oily face..

Used the maggi cup, flash bounce on the wall and bounce to the subject. the background and the face of the subject look very soft and comfortable.. ah... brows.gif brows.gif

i have photo that using the speedlite and maggi cup and this photo taken in behind a door and a quite dark room.

Erm thanks for explain. So it meant that sb600 and sb400 is just the different power of that flash, either it is strong or weak. that's all? if shoooting some celebration party in a house at night, sb400 should work perfectly?

not only that.
the recharging time for the higher end model might be faster. higher end models tend to have highner technologies like wireless and stuffs like that.

celebration party is alright using the SB400.

you are not doing some event photo (wedding) or Prime Minister doing a speech kind of photo. so, no worries!

The D40x MIGHT or might NOT replace the D40 but the price of the D40 will drop terribly up the point of no more stock, then the D40x will come, hope that helps.

Actually I also waited for D40X. But i bought D40 instead cos cheaper by 500 ringgit. And i get one 50mm 1.8 to play play around. Reason being i choose D40 is because is cheaper, 10MP doesn't have much different with 6MP and ultimately, D40X needed to use the same AF-S lens.

I found that D40x and D40 is the same thingy cos limited lens. If 10MP cam, I would go straight to D80 or Canon 400d with broader choices of lens.

Boring and sad ler go the shop, see the lens cheap but ask the dealer this lens can use or not, they say cannot. So which can?? The 2600RM 18-200VR. Damn. I wish can go Tamron or Sigma stuff.

You paid hundreds of Ringgit below the D80, D70s, 400D or even the 350D what are you expecting? You mentioned that 10MP doesn't make much of a difference compared to 6MP? Let me tell you what you loose out ... ultimately :

1. 4MP of difference in sharpness and ability to enlarge or crop images.
2. At least 2 AF-point less than the nearest entry level DSLR in the market.
3. The ONLY DSLR with lens usage handicap in the market : No one brand had ever manufactured a camera model like this ever, before this.
4. The AF is very slow ... with a 18-200mm VR lens mounted the camera's focusing mechanism was SEARCHING in a perfectly litted living room full of people just becoz the 3 AF points do not know which is human and which i floor or wall!

tried D40X over at PC fair too...
it's basically the same camera as the D40.
dont really feel the differences...
it's all internal... extra 4MP and stuffs!

seeing that it is rm 2450 for the d40x plus kit, i think it's a good buy.
got bag and tripod and memory card or not?
