UAE concludes joint military exercise with Malaysia

A military exercise in Abu Dhabi between UAE and Malaysian ground forces, Desert Tiger 4, ended on Thursday.

The Desert Tiger series is an annual joint exercise between the two countries to highlight professionalism and efficiency of UAE Ground Forces troops and to raise their level of combat readiness.

Maj Gen Saleh Al Amiri, Commander of UAE Ground Forces, attended the military exercise along with General Dato’ Sri Zulkiple bin Hj Kassim, Malaysian army chief.

Desert Tiger 4 comes part of the UAE leadership’s continued desire to support and create distinguished partnerships between UAE and Malaysia.

Another aim is to promote mutual cooperation and achieve a common vision by sharing experiences, enhancing joint military actions, and raising the level of performance and combat efficiency.

The exercise also trains ground forces on the use of modern weapons for all types of combat operations.

The UAE Ground Forces have been drafting training plans for their personnel. The Desert Tiger 4 exercise highlighted the success of these plans, Wam said.

Russian Navy reconnaissance ship sinks after collision in Black Sea

A Russian Navy reconnaissance ship has sunk after colliding with another vessel near the Bosporus, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
The hull of ‘the Liman,’ a 1,560-ton reconnaissance ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, was breached below the waterline in the collision, the Defense Ministry said.

The Turkish coast guard said it rescued 78 people from the Russian ship, which was later confirmed by the Russian authorities.

“All crew members of the research ship of the Black Sea Fleet are alive and well and are currently preparing for evacuation from the Turkish rescue ship to a Russian ship,” the Defense Ministry said.

According to the Defense Ministry, ‘the Liman’ collided with another ship, ‘Ashot-7,’ about 40km northwest from the Bosporus Strait.

Media identified the other ship involved in the collision as the Togo-flagged livestock carrier ‘Youzarsif H.’

German soldier held over 'false flag' terror plot

An officer in the German army who posed as a Syrian refugee for more than a year has been arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack.

The 28-year-old lieutenant, who has not been named under German privacy laws, was living a double life, prosecutors said Thursday.

Police are believed to be working on the theory that the officer, who has a history of expressing anti-foreigner views, planned to carry out a "false flag" terror attack and blame it on refugees. No details of the suspected terror plot have been released.

In a separate case last week German police arrested German-Russian national who allegedly bombed the Borussia Dortmund football team's as part of a share scam and tried to blame it on Islamic terrorists.

The arrested man successfully posed as a Syrian asylum-seeker despite the fact he is of German background and speaks no Arabic.

He spent some time living in an official refugee shelter and was paid benefits as an asylum-seeker. "This is quite an unusual story," a spokesman for prosecutors in Frankfurt said. "It's more than strange. We will have to wait for the investigation to uncover his motives."

Trail of evidence

The officer first came to the authorities' attention in February, when he was arrested by Austrian police after being caught trying to hide a gun in a toilet at Vienna airport. Though he was swiftly released, German police and the MAD military intelligence service began investigating him and uncovered an extraordinary trail of evidence.

They found that the lieutenant, who was posted to a joint Franco-German unit in France, was also living some of the time as a Syrian asylum-seeker at a refugee shelter in Germany.

He first presented himself as an asylum-seeker in Dec 2015, amid the influx of more than one million migrants who flooded into the country under Angela Merkel's "open-door" refugee policy.

He was given a place to stay in a refugee shelter in the town of Giessen, near Frankfurt, and formally applied for asylum under a false name in Jan 2016.

Prosecutors were at a loss to explain how he was able to register as an asylum-seeker. It is believed he continued living sporadically at a refugee shelter in the months that followed, dividing his time between there and the military base. "Just because he was stationed in France does not mean that he had to stay there every day," a police spokesman said.

One theory being pursued by investigators is that he may have posed as a refugee to set up a false trail of evidence ahead of a terror attack. According to this theory, he would have deliberately left his fingerprints at the scene of an attack so they would lead back to the fake refugee. A second man, a student, 24, from the officer's home town of Offenbach, has been arrested as an "accomplice" in the case.

US jails Singaporean for exporting bomb parts to Iran

WASHINGTON: A Singaporean man was sentenced to 40 months in prison on Thursday for helping ship US-made radio frequency modules to Iran, some of which were eventually found in IED bombs in Iraq.

Lim Yong Nam, 43, also known as Steven Lim, pleaded guilty last Dec in Washington to fraud charges related to US sanctions violations by helping route 6,000 of the modules through Singapore to Iran.

Lim and others he worked with had declared Singapore as the final destination for the electronics, but instead, they were forwarded from the Southeast Asian city-state in five lots to Iran, the US Justice Department said.

"Lim and his co-conspirators were directly aware of the restrictions on sending US-origin goods to Iran," the department said.

The modules can be used in networking home and office computer equipment. But in 2008-2009, coalition forces in Iraq discovered modules from the same shipments being used in the detonation systems of unexploded IEDs, or improvised explosive devices.

Lim was detained in the case in Indonesia in 2014 and extradited to the United States last year.

Philippines blast injures 14 as ASEAN leaders gather

MANILA: Fourteen people were wounded in a pipe bomb blast in Manila, Philippine police said Saturday, but authorities dismissed any link to an Asian leaders’ meeting under way in the capital.

The explosion happened late Friday about five kilometres (three miles) from the heavily guarded complex where Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) leaders are meeting and police said they were investigating the possibility it was a revenge assault.

A relative of a 14-year-old boy injured in an attack in the same area by a group of youths earlier in the week had made public threats, police spokeswoman Chief Inspector Kimberly Molitas said.

She described the device as a “homemade pipe bomb” stuffed with low-grade explosives, like the ones used to make firecrackers.

No one has been arrested.

“The incident is not in any way connected to or directed (at) the ongoing ASEAN summit,” Ernesto Abella, spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte, said in a statement.

“We assure our people that security measures are in place in today’s event and ask the public for their full understanding and cooperation in this regard.”

The Philippines is fighting Islamic militants based in the country’s south who have been blamed by police in the past for deadly bombings as well as kidnappings.

Of the 14 people hurt, six were treated for minor wounds and sent home, while eight others remain in hospital, two of them with serious injuries, Molitas said. --AFP

Almost 300 German soldiers investigated over Nazi salutes and attacks on asylum seekers

he German military is investigating almost 300 of its troops on suspicion of Nazi sympathies and far-Right extremism, it has emerged.

Those under investigation include serving soldiers who gave the Nazi salute and shouted “Heil Hitler”, “Sieg Heil” and “Heil our Führer”.

One soldier posted a picture of Adolf Hitler on WhatsApp with the caption: “Missing since 1945: Adolf please report! Germany needs you!” In another case, a soldier physically attacked a group of asylum-seekers after asking if they were Christian or Muslim.

A total of 275 military personnel are currently under investigation by MAD, the German military’s counter-intelligence service. The investigations emerged in a written answer to a parliamentary question from the opposition Left Party. In a 15-page response, the defence ministry noted its concern that many of the more serious cases had been dealt with too leniently by the military.

The MAD is investigating cases from the last six years, many of which have already been resolved by the military’s disciplinary authorities. Only 11 of those currently under investigation have been discharged. The soldier who posted the picture of Hitler was fined €800 but allowed to remain in the military. A soldier who gave a Hitler salute while serving in Latvia was also allowed to remain in uniform.

In another case, a soldier posted a picture of a machine-gun on social media with the caption: “The fastest German asylum procedure, rejects up to 1,400 requests per minute”. All charges against him were dropped, on the grounds there was no evidence of dereliction of duty.

Of the cases under investigation, 12 date back to 2011-2013, 20 are from 2014, 47 from 2015, and 143 from 2016. There have been a further 53 so far this year. There was no official explanation for the dramatic rise in recent years, but it may be linked to the influx of over a million asylum-seekers over the last two years.

India says Pakistan killed 2 Indian soldiers in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Two Indian soldiers were killed and their bodies mutilated Monday in an ambush by Pakistani soldiers along the highly militarized de facto border that divides the disputed region of Kashmir between the nuclear-armed rivals, the Indian army said. But Pakistan denied any such attack, calling the Indian claims false.

Separately, five police officials and two bank employees were killed when suspected rebels ambushed a bank van in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

Pakistani soldiers fired rockets and mortars at two Indian positions southwest of the Line of Control in the Krishna Ghati sector, the army said in a statement.

It said Pakistani soldiers also ambushed an Indian patrol operating between the two posts and mutilated the bodies of two Indian soldiers.
