U.S. Efforts to Promote Women, Peace, and Security in Peacekeeping

Women are pivotal in ending conflicts and promoting sustainable peace and security. Because women and men experience conflict differently and understand peace differently, both need to be involved in peace and security efforts. Recognizing the significant impact of conflict on women and the important role that they play in peace operations, the United States is committed to promoting women, peace, and security objectives through our Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI).

The integration of a greater number of female peacekeepers can strengthen the effectiveness of peace operations by helping to: address the needs of female ex-combatants during the process of demobilization and reintegration into civilian life; interview survivors of gender-based violence; make the peacekeeping force more approachable to the entire population. In addition, women peacekeepers can help gain a fuller perspective on local women’s concerns and needs and they can serve as role models to empower local women.

South Korean Fishing Vessel Collides With U.S. Navy Guided-Missile Cruiser

On Tuesday, the U.S. Navy said that a South Korean fishing vessel collided with the USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) while it was conducting routine operations in international waters. The Navy added that no one on either vessel were injured in the collision in the waters east of the Korean Peninsula.

The South Korean vessel reportedly hit the missile-guided cruiser’s port side at approximately 11:50 a.m. local time. Both of the ships were able to navigate using their own power after the collision.

“The incident is under investigation by both U.S. Navy and South Korea Coast Guard,” the Navy said in a statement. “Damage assessments of both the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser and the 60-70 foot long fishing vessel are underway.”

The USS Lake Champion is a part of the Carl Vinson Strike Group which is currently on deployment in the Western-Pacific.

German army needs to remove WW2-era names: defense minister

The names of German military barracks honoring a handful of World War Two officers should changed to show that the country's post-war armed forces have made a clean break from their Nazi past, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday.

Having come in for criticism herself after accusing the Bundeswehr armed forces of "weak leadership" amid a national debate over whether there are right-wing extremists in the military, von der Leyen told Bild am Sonntag newspaper the barracks should no longer be named after Nazi-era officers.

"The Bundeswehr has to send signals both internally and externally that it is not rooted in the tradition of the Wehrmacht," she said, referring to the World War Two-era name for the German army. The Bundeswehr was created in 1955.

"It needs to confidently put more of an emphasis on its own 60-year history. Why not rename those barracks? In light of the recent developments, it's time for a new discussion on that."

The Bundeswehr removed the names of many Wehrmacht soldiers, who were seen by and large as honorable soldiers not tied to any war crimes, during reform carried out in the 1980s and 1990s. Yet about a half dozen barracks remain named after Nazi-era figures, the most prominent of which is General Erwin Rommel, who killed himself in 1944 after a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

"We've got to tackle the issue of renaming barracks," von der Leyen said, adding that such a move should be undertaken as part of efforts to modernize the armed forces.

also tanks manufacturer really hates if their customer tried to mod their tanks on their own

as such with the case of polish leopards 2 where the polish was very interested to put their erawa blocks on their tanks but their manufacturer the KMW literally says they cannot

the cpm stuggle might makes sense before the independence cuz of the colonialism but they dragged it out even after the malayan independence and up until the late 80s
and it achieved nothing in the end.. and thousands of civilians and security forces paid with their lives..

looking back at chin peng's exile sentence and full pardon to the former cpm members and allowing them to go back to their civilian lives is just a slap on the hand

Ivory Coast launches military operation to quash mutiny

Ivory Coast has launched a military operation "to re-establish order" after soldiers who staged a three-day mutiny over bonus payments refused the army's demand to disarm.

The mutineers, most of them former rebel fighters who fought to bring President Alassane Ouattara to power, have sealed off Ivory Coast's second-largest city, Bouake, and used gunfire to break up protests against the revolt.

As loyalist soldiers advanced on Bouake on Sunday, the Military Chief of Staff General Sekou Toure issued a statement announcing the new offensive.

"These acts of an extreme seriousness are contrary to the mission of protection assigned to the armed forces," the statement said. "As a result, a military operation is under way to re-establish order."

Six people were wounded by gunfire on Sunday, and one of three protesters shot and wounded on Saturday died of his wounds.

The mutineers said they would not surrender.

"They asked us to lay down our arms and surrender. We refused and demand our money...We are waiting for them," Sergeant Seydou Kone told the Reuters news agency.

QUOTE(Kojke @ May 15 2017, 10:28 AM)
CPM continued their struggle after independence because they didn't see any independence from colonialist. The socialists and any party who weren't alligned to British were barred from participating in the election. The election was designed to make umno/alliance (which was here to serve the British interest after "independence") the sole victor.

Whether it is a slap on the wrist or not, it was the negotiated outcome, fully documented in black and white and signed by participating parties. Unfortunately it is not honored by the Malaysia. CPM did not ask for any peace treaty, the Thai didn't ask for one. It is the sole initiative of Malaysia, and to be trashed by Malaysia after the other party honored it. This give Malaysia a very bad reputation. But this was not the first case. Mahathir tried to putar halim after sigining the water supply agreement with Singapore but the Singkie threatened to go to UN if Malaysia tried to be funny (Lee Kuan Yew was smart to registed the agreement with UN). Finally Malaysia backed down. CPM wasn't that lucky. They didn't exist anymore the moment they execute the agreement (disarmed, disbanded) and the ex-members have noone to turn to when Malaysia tore up the very agreement that Malaysia initiated willingly.

power to the victor i guess and anti-socialism is really2 strong at that time
and no way the brits gonna give any chances for socialism to take roots here

North Korea fires missile that lands in sea near Russia

North Korea, defying calls to curb its weapons program, fired a ballistic missile that landed in the sea near Russia on Sunday in a launch the United States called a message to South Korea days after its new president took office pledging to engage Pyongyang in dialogue.

Japanese Defence Minister Tomomi Inada said the missile could be a new type. It flew for 30 minutes before dropping into the sea between North Korea's east coast and Japan. North Korea has consistently test-fired missiles in that direction.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial assessments showed the missile landed 97 km (60 miles) south of Russia's Vladivostok region.

The missile flew 700 km (430 miles) and reached an altitude of more than 2,000 km (1,245 miles), according to officials in South Korea and Japan, further and higher than an intermediate-range missile North Korea successfully tested in February from the same region of Kusong, northwest of its capital Pyongyang.

1) They raised arm against the "colonialist installed government", not the country.
2) An agreement is an agreement and at the end of the day, is still an agreement. Don't want them back? Why agree to it? Why initiate the so called "peace accord" in the first place? Nobody forced the government to do so, and the Thai and cpm didn't give a fuck whether there was any peace treaty. It was all over long time ago. You get others to come to the table, signed the paper and tore it up immediately to get yourself flamed. You have nothing to do or what?
*
nope it was not, go google "operasi talong/taloong"
the cpm is pretty much still an active force inside msia until the peace accord

if they are a splinter unit then the peace accord wouldnt have any effect and they would just continue their armed struggle

I don't see what struggle there was left since their goods have no market. The most they would have end up like abu sayyap, but wihout foreign government support of course. to give up was the wise (and only) choice. cpm who knew a thing or 2 about shooting in the 80s were mostly oldman. there were many young thais that joined them simply because they were too poor and cpm run schools were the only venue they could get education. thai government didn't give shit. of course these lads were not soldier.

what an optimistic view of an armed rebel group running around msia & thai lol
this kind of thinking what makes philippine & southern thai a rebel nest until today
sorry to say this kind logic is pretty fcked up doh.gif

Sorry to say if all parties are sincere to get rid of these armed groups, they would have been long gone. Had no foreign governments endorsed them (some even supported them behind the scene), they wouldn't have survive. Now this is really fcked up.
*
you forgot that terrorism can still survive and take roots if their local community supports it and these ph & thai rebels thrives because of that.. their community supports them very much so..
what makes the emergency era unique is that the british "hearts and mind" campaign and other countermeasures succeeded in turning the community against the cpm

also unfortunately south east asian countries rarely sought their neigbours help for their own internal conflicts
if these countries cant solve their own problems within their own borders, well.. thats not our problem haha laugh.gif

QUOTE(Kojke @ May 17 2017, 12:10 PM)
Why "hearts and mind" did not succeed in those countries? Or is there any sincere "hearts and mind" at all? south east asian countries not only rarely sought their neigbours help, they sabotage their neighbours some more.

Why the thai was so enthusiastic about the hatyai peace accord? what did malaysia pay them? around the time of the treaty signing, thai newspaper published the news of the arrest of 2 malay terrorist near the border. Some people in Selangor recognized the duo as residence and unlike what the thai claimed, they were seen snatched at a mamak store in Shah Alam by plain cloths (presumed to be SB). That's pretty much illustrate the kind of "dynamism" involved in the "political movements" in this region.
*
is there even a "hearts and mind" campaign in those country at all? laugh.gif
