Two air force officers were killed Wednesday when their plane crashed during a training flight in northern Chile, the military said.

The plane, a Chilean-made T-35 Pillan, went down at 8:30 am in the Pampa del Tamarugal, a desert area of the Tarapaca region.

Tank firing exercises have been temporarily banned after two soldiers were killed and two injured when ammunition is thought to have exploded inside one of the vehicles.

Both victims were from the Royal Tank Regiment and were injured at Castlemartin on Wednesday afternoon, Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood said.

The two other soldiers hurt were said to be in a critical condition.

The unnamed soldiers were hurt during a live-firing exercise in South Wales.

The Ministry of Defence said it had launched an investigation, along with civilian police, and in the meantime had stopped tank live-fire drills.

The four-man crew of the Challenger 2 main battle tank was firing 120mm practice shells at targets on the Castlemartin Ranges in Pembrokeshire when the explosion occurred.

Army sources said the blast was believed to be “ammunition related”.

Each practice shell has a dummy warhead, but the same propelling charge as a combat shell.

Word has just come in from CFB Esquimalt in BC that an Orca-class training vessel just hit a Victoria-class sub.

No information just yet on the extent of the damage, other than some of the acoustic tiles came off the submarine, sources say.

Seven U.S. sailors are unaccounted for after a Navy destroyer collided with a merchant ship southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, early Saturday local time, the Navy said.

The USS Fitzgerald, a 505-foot destroyer, collided with a Philippine container vessel at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday local time (1:30 p.m. ET Friday), about 56 nautical miles of Yokosuka, the U.S. 7th Fleet said.

The ship, which had experienced some flooding after the collision, and the Japanese Coast Guard were searching for the seven missing sailors, the Fleet said.

"Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the Sailors," Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in a statement. "We thank our Japanese partners for their assistance."

The Fitzgerald’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was injured and transported by helicopter to the U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka and is reportedly in stable condition, the Fleet said. Two other were also injured and flown by helicopter to the naval hospital. the Navy said.

The Fleet said earlier that some flooding was reported on the Fitzgerald, but it remained under its own power but propulsion was limited.

The Fitzgerald suffered damage to its starboard side above and below the waterline, the Fleet said earlier. A U.S. Navy official said after the collision that the bridge was damaged and communication with the ship was limited and difficult.

Two military officers were killed and another one injured as a military helicopter crashed on Tuesday night in the Algerian province of Naama, some 700 kilometers southwest of the capital Algiers, Xinhua News Agency reported citing local media.

The Algerian navy helicopter crashed on a farm in Hamr el Ain during a reconnaissance mission.

KHARTOUM, June 21 (Bernama) -- A Sudanese military helicopter has crashed in northern Sudan, killing all four crew members, the Sudanese army announced Wednesday, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

The Mi-17 helicopter crashed on Tuesday after taking off from Dongola town on an official mission to Al-Daba town in northern Sudan, Sudanese army spokesman Ahmed Khalifa Al-Shami said in a statement.

There were no survivors from the crash, the statement said, without disclosing the identities of the victims.

It blamed "bad weather conditions" for the incident.

A U.S. Air Force RQ-4 Global Hawk crashed near Mt. Whitney about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

No injuries or deaths were reported in the crash.

The remotely piloted aircraft was assigned to a reconnaissance squadron at Beale Air Force Base and was on a routine flight from Edwards Air Force Base back to its home station when it crashed.

The RQ-4 Global Hawk is capable of flying at high altitudes, for long periods of time. The aircraft provides all-weather, day or night intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in worldwide peacetime, contingency and wartime operations.

The PZL W-3 Sokol military helicopter of Polish army crashed at Massanzago, in the Veneto province of Padua, during an exercise on Thursday, sources said.

The six military personnel aboard, five Poles and a French national, got out alive and did not suffer serious injury, the sources said. The aircraft was part of a group flying in formation when the officials on board spotted flames.

The pilot attempted an emergency landing in a field but the aircraft hit the ground hard and caught fire after the impact. Firefighters have put out the blaze.

JAKARTA: At least two people have been killed and several more are missing after an Indonesian search and rescue helicopter crashed, an official said Sunday, in the country’s latest aviation accident.

The helicopter was carrying at least eight people including four crew when it hit a cliff in Temanggung, Central Java province, late Sunday afternoon, a senior official at the social affairs ministry told AFP.

“It is a mountainous area, but it is reachable and our team is already on the ground so we are doing our best to find the other passengers,” the official Adhy Karyono said.

Two unidentified bodies have already been recovered, he added.

The chopper was on a mission to oversee the situation in Central Java, where a volcanic crater erupted at the Dieng Plateau on Sunday afternoon.

An Indian Air Force light weight helicopter (HAL Dhruv) with three on board went missing near Sagalee in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, PTI quoted a Defence source as saying.

The IAF ALH chopper with three crew members was deployed for lifting people stranded due to road blockage between Sagalee & Itanagar.

The Islamic State (IS) militants shot down a Syrian helicopter airdropping food to the besieged city of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria on Sunday, state TV reported.

The helicopter was targeted and set ablaze while airdropping food aid over the IS-seiged city, the report said.

A MiG-23 trainer aircraft today crashed near Balesar village in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district, official sources said.

The aircraft was on a routine sortie. Both the pilots ejected safely. The incident occurred around 11.30 am.

A court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident, the sources said.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that one of its helicopters, Agusta 109 Light Utility, while undertaking a liaison mission in the North East, suffered a technical mishap and crashed into a pool of water in Borno State yesterday.

Though, no life was lost in the incident, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has immediately constituted a board of inquiry to unravel the cause of the incident.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information of NAF, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, said members of the board of inquiry were already in Maiduguri, to carry out their assignment.

The statement reads: “A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Agusta 109 Light Utility Helicopter has suffered a mishap while undertaking a liaison mission targeted at further enhancing the synergy between the Nigerian Army and the NAF in the ongoing counter-insurgency operation in the North East.

A U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 has crashed into a field outside Greenwood, Mississippi, according to a tweet sent by the United States Marine Corps.

The director of emergency management for Leflore County in Mississippi has confirmed that 16 are confirmed dead in the crash.

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Sarah Burns said in a statement that a Marine KC-130 "experienced a mishap" Monday evening but provided no further details.

According to the Associated Press, 12 bodies have been recovered so far from the wreckage.

A German military helicopter assigned to the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali crashed in the West African nation's desert north on Wednesday, killing the two crew members, the German military said.

The Tiger helicopter crashed around midday about 70 km (45 miles) north of Gao, burning out completely with no survivors.
The crash was reported by a second helicopter following in the mission.

"We have now certainty that two soldiers have given their lives in the service of our country," German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen told a news conference. The Germans were the first killed in combat since 2013 in Afghanistan, a military spokesman said.

US military aircraft and boats are scouring waters off Australia's east coast Saturday for three Marines involved in what the Marines Corps is calling a "mishap" with an MV-22 aircraft.

Twenty-three of the 26 personnel on board have been rescued, the US Marine Corps said.

Small boats and aircraft from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group are carrying out the search and rescue operation, according to the Marine Corps.

The incident took place during a training exercise the Marines were conducting with the Australian military. The MV-22 is a vertical-launch aircraft, also known as an Osprey.

"The aircraft involved in the mishap had launched from the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and was conducting regularly scheduled operations when the aircraft entered the water," the Marine Corps said in a statement.

In a statement, Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne said she had spoken to US Defense Secretary James Mattis to offer Australia's support in "anyway that can be of assistance."

Australian authorities said the incident happened in Shoalwater Bay and that no Australian personnel were on board.

An IDF Apache helicopter crashed in southern Israel, killing one pilot and critically injuring the second the IDF said on Monday night.

According to IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Ronen Manelis at around 9 P.M. the Apache helicopter from the Magic Touch Squadron was returning from a training exercise when it alerted the tower at Ramon Airbase that it was experiencing a technical issue.

The Apache was on its final approach to land when it came down inside the base, Manelis said adding that there were only moments between the pilots alerting the tower to when it crashed.

The pilot, Dudi Zohar, was confirmed dead and the navigator was critically injured and evacuated to Saroka Hospital in Beersheba.

According to Manelis an initial team arrived at the site shortly after the crash which occurred from the approximate height of the tower and senior IDF officials will fully investigate the cause.
