CPF and Income Tax

- If you work 183 days or more in a calendar year you are a tax resident and pay the same progressive tax rates as locals.
- If you work less than 183 days you are not a tax resident and pay flat 15% tax or progressive tax rates as locals (whichever is higher). However the following year if your employment spills over into exceeding 183 days you can request IRAS to re-assess you as a tax resident and refund you the difference in tax paid.
- Visit IRAS website for more information on taxes.
- CPF (equivalent of our EPF) is only mandatory for PR's and SC's (Singapore Citizens) at 16% Employee, 20% Employer, capped at first $5k per monthShould be Employer 17% and Employee 20 %, capped at SGD6K per month
- Some companies will encash the employer portion for foreigners.
- Visit CPF Website for more information on CPF.

Quick question, did anyone here convert to PR and successfully convinced the boss to pay full-employer rate CPF on the first year? biggrin.gif
*
Me... after a month become PR, but you have to contribute 20% from your salary in order to allow employer contribute 17%.
You need to fill in attached form and approval from CPF.

This is very new to me, so mean it was possible? hmm.gif
Coming June i need to start contribute 15% to my CPF, for me 5% to 15% is a big jump, but if 15% vs 20% actually no much different, will consider to submit this form to CPF and request employer contrinbute 17%!  tongue.gif
*
Absolutely possible, because my colleague also done this at second year, from 15% to 20%!

true, only ppl who work in msia especially KL will see the difference and appreciate it
*
It is damn true, i worked in KL before...it is a nightmare to me.

In Kl, you need to own a private transport (Car)... it is an extra cost (Maintenance, toll, parking)! Plus the traffic jam is very unpredictable, one small accident can cause a 2km jam...wtf...

In SG, bus and MRT....travel time to office almost same everyday...unless there is MRT delay/breakdown (recently the northsouth line many issue but i still appreciate it!), and it is cheaper than owning a car, no need to waste my energy to drive, i can play phone while travelling in MRT/Bus

Different strokes for different folks. Some enjoy driving. Some hate it. Some feel liberated by the privacy that their car affords, some feel liberated by the lack of attention and consistency public transport provides.

Its good that you find singapore suitable for you  smile.gif
*
Correct... some of my friend dont like SG, because cannot driving, they hate public transport, they said no freedom!

From my view, i can go anywhere by bus and mrt, uber/grab, now even Obike! Once a while can go vacation, imagine if i work in Kl, i will no have extra money for oversea travelling, only can go Melaka, Penang..... go JB also need to consider, the fuel and toll is expensive vmad.gif vmad.gif

I had worked in KL before and working in SG now. I still feel SG expenses is expensive but it depends on your lifestyle in SG, you can either enjoy life in SG or save $$ in SG. I do not ever think I'm good because of earn SG and convert to MYR. I should earn a lot $$ in Malaysia rather than earn SGD after currency conversion.
*
Agree, it definitely depend on lifestyle.

If everyday eat in hawker, it is not expensive at all. If i work in KL, will i afford dining in high standard restaurant? No...i will still eat in hawker..

I never convert my salary to MYR, i will compare it with typical local income (it is way too low when compare with some local..)
I only get advantage for commitment in MSIA, like parent allowance and PTPTN...

im currently using citibank smrt card , but thinking if actually spend using citi miles card is better
*
Personally i use few cards to accumulate miles:

DBS world women 4miles/$ for online shopping
UOB PPV 4 miles/$ for paywave transaction except SMART$
UOB Priv Miles for oversea spending when business trips
Citi Rewards 4 miles/$ for clothes, bags, shoes, departmental stores (online/physical store)
DBS altitude for some general spending and pay annual fees to get 10,000 miles
AMEX krisflyer for welcome bonus (Going to cancel)

Other than for SQ flight, got any non-flight redemption? I have 15k miles going to expire
*
Your 15k miles is in credit card account or Krisflyer?
If in credit card account, you can use it for other stuff like coupon..
If in krisflyer account, then you may try to redeem it before expired, for nearer flight...like KL/Indonesia..

Dear All,

I am currently working in marine industry since June 2016, so roughly 15 months already. S pass holder. I am looking for new job searching, unfortunately, more than 30 job application emails sent and follow up, still not secure even 1 job interview.

May you all enlighten me what is going wrong with me ? The job I search are mainly OnG, marine, and construction field. I was taking mechanical engineering, 1st class honour. Any advice what should I do for improvement ? Thank you very much for your advice.
*
What position are you looking? Are you work in Shipyard? Most of the position in these area need a lot experience as you only have 15 months experience, they might not interesting to hire you.

Project Engineer is the position I am looking for. I am confident that I am a fast learner, 15 months may be short, but if i can perform whatever (even more than) a 50 months senior did, then I think it should be an main obstacles for my job application.

One culture that I fell up with my current company management is promotion based on seniority instead of contribution. Then the security that work more than 30+ years should be more than qualify for GM, CEO lol.
*
I feel you bro, the culture such as promotion based on seniority is definitely fed us up but it can't be avoid, especially O&G and maritime industry. Now even worst due to oil price... no increment, promotion rejected, no bonus, retrenchment, and etc..

All we can do is to learn as much as we can, build our network with people in this industry and wait the market recover although it will be slow now. I receive a lot call from recruiters but most of such company only willing to offer 5-10% increment based on your current pay if you join them..not even based on experience.. vmad.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif
